  • Very basic and easy speaker wire antenna. This build is for someone who wants to try a very easy first time antenna build. No reason to be intimidated with ANY complex figures. From here, many questions and better ideas will grow. But this is an awesome start! Also works for a GREAT back up/emergency antenna.

The speaker wire dipole has been around for decades, in the old days the common name was zip cord antenna or zip cord Zepp it had been in the ARRL antenna book for many years it may still be there? , the twin line feed is actually in the 75-ohm range and although not as low loss as using (300 ohm to 600 ohm ladder line) the antenna can actually radiate very well even at Qrp you can cut the antenna to the lowest band you wish to operate, just split it and tie the knot and run your dipole ends out and then with a good wide band antenna tuner you can work multiple bands, This antenna is very similar to the center fed Zepp which has been in ham radio since the days before coax, I have made hundreds of contacts using this simple antenna and many of the POTA ops have recently found its usefulness, Thanks for the video 73 J

@ThePrivateMan3301 Correct. Old thumbnail. This has been clarified by many in the comments. I was newer to the hobby and appreciate the information. 73!

I can appreciate that you know only one leg is emitting RF, but this is a quarter wave antenna on it's side, you need both legs to push pull, so a unbalanced to balanced transformer at the middle, called a 1:1 BalUn is required, not optional. I'm glad it's hearing and transmitting and I suppose that is all that matters, but the majority of your RF is being absorbed by the ground.

Thank you for this information. I will definitely educate myself on this feedback. This antenna isn’t my design. This is a back up antenna made famous by a Jerry who is now a SK, KG6HQD. I must say, despite most RF being lost to ground, this antenna gets better signal reports than my other antennas from manufacturers. Very interesting. I am brand new to making anything resembling an antenna 😂 so like I said, the information is appreciated. 73!

@@KD2YDN This "design" is left over from when radios had dual screw down terminals on the back giving you a direct balanced output, in that you'd use ladder line to get out side. Every ham finds this and runs with it, learn to make three wire toroid balun,

Very sad news for sure. Loved his videos. I remember looking up what SOTA was and he had a live feed explaining it. Awesome contributor to the hobby.

@@Bob814u Now that sounds like a merry xmas 😂. Fun to forget sometimes I suppose. I do that sort of thing all the time. Any of your favorite builds, please email me. I’m looking to further my very limited knowledge.

Very nice Christopher! Jerry's Website is down now I see. Thanks for sharing and Happy New year. BTW, I have a WA3RNC TR-35 on order. I wanted to get the smaller fellow for now. Cheers & 72, Dave - KU9L

@@KD2YDN I wanted the big brother, but the TR-35 is more compact and sounds wonderful. - I was going to get the SW-3B or SW-3C, but could not decide which, and in the end the prospect of getting 17 meters won. I am building the QRPGuys 3-Band vertical so I think I will build a KG6HQD dipole for 17M as I can use my 21' fishing pole there too, LOL.

Thanks Tim! KG6HQD , Jerry’s idea. I just copied him. Works great. The “revisiting my first SOTA summit” video was with this doublet. It really works great and stays in my car for a back up antenna.
