My first ad hoc 2m antenna was an 18" piece of coat hanger, with a banana plug on one end, plugged into the center hole of the SO-239 on my FT-221 (and with a 90 degree bend to make it vertical-ish), and a wire nut on the other end, to make it less pokey. The counterpoise was essentially the rig body, which, on the diagonal was probably 15 inches. The rig was happy enough with it.
If you are going to be prepared, a roll up J-pole is also a good choice.
In the field, don't let lack of ring terminals stop you: Those binding posts will retain bare wire too. Make the wire a little long and take an extra turn around the post after it comes out of the cross hole. In fact, you can take extra turns to tune it: take it through the cross hole and wind the tail coming out of the other side. Slide more or less through to tune.
And it should work fine with one "counter poise wire", with the bonus that you can deploy it horizontally if desired (CW or SSB on the 705, for example).

That's awesome you did the build with a Leatherman. I saw The Tech Prepper's videos on this antenna and had been thinking of making one. Now I need to do it and do it using my Wave.
Just wanted to see if it could be done in the field if that was the only tool you had available. It's a neat antenna and worth the time to build. I ended up building a couple of them to drop into a couple of different bags.
Have you made an antenna with just a coax? Remove about 19 to 20 inches of the outside jacket. Fold the shield down over the outside of the coax, pull it down tight. Find something to hold it up by the inter conductor, and test it. The shield because it is pulled out over the outside will be a little shorter. 73 W4DES

Like a goofball, I bought a backpack J pole antenna made from twin lead. Building antennas is fun.
I have several of those but always enjoy building antennas :-)
First off thanks for the video and all you do for the community KM4ACK!
Couple questions:
1.) If I followed along correctly, you started off with 19 inches and trimmed a total of 4 1/2 inches from each piece of wire, correct?
2.) For your own ad-hoc field testing experiment, if you had left it at the original 19 inches per the initial calculations, do you think that at the measured 2.9 SWR, it would have provided better performance than the whip antenna provided with your HT?
Just curious if you had to whip one of these up but didn't have an SWR meter to fine tune it.
Looking back I think I made a mistake and initially cut the wires too long (longer than 19"). I did end up cutting ~4.5 inches off though. Even at 2.9:1 SWR, it would work better than the whip since you can elevate it higher than you would be able to with a whip.
I wonder how only one ground redial ( a vertical Dipole) would compare to the two or three ground redials?

What was the ring terminal size you used for the bnc adapter?
1/4 inch
Did you spread out the counterpoise wires or just let them hang down from the BNC adapter?

Do the knots at the end of the wire make any performance difference?
maybe a slight different but it is essentially the same as folding the wire back on itself instead of cutting it shorter.

Honestly you should try your feet at one. Its much more of a challenge. :)
