Garret identified exactly why I call FFXIV my favorite book series I’ve ever played. Stuff like president dragon really feels like the kind of diatribe George RR or Tolkien would go on to help build the world in a fantasy novel. But in an RPG? The last thing I’d expect.

I think the "endwalker is bad" discourse didn't really hit full stride until the end of 6.2/6.3
Nothing Endwalker put out was bad really, but the longer release cycle and focus on QoL content made the patches feel more sparse than they were and caused many folks to feel left behind.

    • @cobbil

Honestly there was no better time to do the Qol patches than endwalker. I took a good long break, and am still on a partial break from the game because endwalker felt like a good stopping point for a while. I was completely satisfied with the ending and had no issue with not logging in and playing regularly. I wasn't as invested in the patch stories because like I said, I was coming down from the incredible high that endwalker ended on. I felt no pressure to log in each time a new patch released, instead just decided to do them whenever I got the feeling to continue. The people complaining about there not being much to do in endwalker are the same people playing everyday without finding other things to do.

@@luckytanuki5449 I don't disagree with the "no better time" for it. Those who put all their entertainment eggs in one basket are a little strange to me.

    • @vermillionwing
      @vermillionwing 4 місяці тому +1

I think part of it was the Stormblood effect but worse, where instead of regional exploration and focus, it shotgunned a massive amount of societies globally and only dipped into each one briefly. You could have honestly broken up Endwalker into like 2 or 3 separate expansions and deeply fleshed out the regions. Thanavir which has been name dropped and hyped since ARR had it's entire northern (and superior jungle) half get relegated to a dungeon. Most of the ilsabard continent is still unknown, as is most of garlemald such as Corvus.
So once the hype of the MSQ settled it kind of felt rushed and kind of empty voided compared to the regional focused expansions like HW/ShB. The QOL stuff was definitely part of it but was necessary as the tech debt for ff14 was building up.

It genuinely annoys me when people say "This is a standalone story that doesn't seem to lead into anything in the future." It's honestly such a a dumb take. Sure, even if it doesn't lead up to anything right away in Dawntrail, XIV has always had to use pre-established lore to lay breadcrumbs for the future even if it's not directly connected right now. The warriors of darkness were the same way in Heavensward.

I think the President Dragon scene is important because it gives insight to Vtra. Vtra Has a sister lost to the void, He has a tear to manipulate and could put people to work on it, but it would endanger his city. His talking of Taxes and what to do with the money is him going deep into "I can't do this very painful thing, I have a city to run! So much to do, no time to dwell on things!" Which is why it ends on the whole "his people want him to think of himself for once" scene.
Also, it adds a moment in game where they are like "Yeah, we have a resolution to the massive destruction of the final days. and everyone is going to be fine"
Lastly, it is highly amusing to me that a LITERAL dragon with a LITERAL dragon hoard is using his money in a nicer and kinder way than any of the Syndicate members in Ul'dah

in a sense you are right about the "continuation/conclusion"
imagine a dragon murderer with nothing in his mind besides revenge, paying for a map to help an orphan...
Yshtola still keeps searching for knowledge but she also knows when to take breaks to go on a newfound adventure...
Graha just wanted one more adventure with the WoL, and he gets it...
pd. the music when the Knight in Black appears was a HUGE nod to ff4 fans and when the 4 "elements" walked in ... was a real "OMG they will do it"

I liked the EW patch story, It serves as a bridge between major arcs and sets up major themes that the devs can pick up for later stories.
With regards to the 6.1 tax story, FFXIV has always been concerned with the aftereffects of war and disasters in a fairly realistic way. It serves to root what we do in a living, continuing world.

This is Vtira's treasure hoard, so of course it would contain lovely fabrics.

Remember that they regularly do "filler" things like this only to bring it back multiple expansions later, rather than having it tie directly into the next expansion (the next-expansion-setup content is usually in later X.4, X.5, and the like). The Doman refugees were postgame patch filler content in ARR, then Doman liberation was central to Stormblood, two expansions later. Warriors of Darkness were postgame patch filler content in ARR, and ended up being central to Shadowbringers, two expansions later. Stormblood's postgame content with the changes in Garlemald were presumably setting up stuff for a Garlemald expansion, before the team decided to have the big wrap-up expansion be the next one after Shadowbringers. I wouldn't be surprised if the stuff we're seeing set up here becomes central in a later expansion after Dawntrail.

So Reapers enter a pact with a voidsent that allows them to act as an anchor for the voidsent to exist in our world without the use of a planar fissure or voidgate. Because of said pact the voidsent must do the bidding of its reaper host as the two until ones demise are bound. That also goes to show that this voidsent is now free meaning Zenos is gone for good. The Reaper art was an ancient Garlean art used heavily before the advent of magitek saw their order phased out (among other events which I shan't spoil.)

Whatever peoples views on "filler content" is doesnt really matter. The writers at CBU3 think its important enough to be full-on MSQ, and so whether that pay off is in DT or in 3 expansions (Crystal Tower), it's definitely going to matter.
If theres huge important moments in "side content" like Coils, Eden, or Aglaia, just know CBU3 think that this arc is more critical than those.

The 13th and how they approach it has always given me a sense of trepidation, mostly because the Void Quests are side content that is extremely important to any ongoing plot that involves the 13th. But it's also locked behind doing every Shadowbringers role quest and some extreme HW primals so it can't really be made part of the MSQ in the same way that say Crystal Tower became MSQ content, not without heavy reworking at least. How can FFXIV ever have a full, satisfying storyline that utilizes the 13th without involving Cylva and Unukalhai? Now if any writing team can wrangle something out of this it's XIV's, and personally I really enjoyed the 6.x MSQ. But I can at least explain why I think the FFXIV might be more hesitant to really delve deep into the Void for future content.
But in any case, always enjoy these summary videos. Too many streamers just blow through everything and don't really post their thoughts as standalone content and I love this stuff.

  • @Keira_Blackstone

I don't really consider this story arc 'filler', any more than the warriors of darkness in 3.x were 'filler'. it's clearly laying the groundwork for things down the line.
also- on your issues with the 'president dragon' stuff- the fact that the game lets you check back in with the normal people you saved and help them rebuild after the big catastrophes is, straight up, THE biggest reason I prefer this game over WoW. I love getting to hang out in the world I saved, that actually behaves as if the events I played through actually happened.

Look, idk which patch unlocked it but there is a lvl90(not 80 with sync) yellow quest in Sharlayan near the docks that is called A Heartless Hypothesis (or similar) that I have just now done and IT BROUGHT MY CLOSER TO TEARS than any yellow quest has the right to (I don't really ever cry when reading/watching, so this is basically tears)...
It's a wrap up that I wanted for a long time and never thought I was going to get and I consider it mandatory.
Hint, you will be walking around with 2 minions from Stormblood.
There's a similar gut punch tie-up in Thavnair for patch content.

It's also short and sweet so anyone reading this just go do it. Do it.

I am a strong supporter of the 6.1-6.5 story. Some of it is because of my love of FFIV, but much of it is because of some of the characters in the story.
I think one thing people reacted to, perhaps subconsciously, is that Endwalker is when CBU3 went from a three-month patch cycle to a four-month patch cycle. It feels more content-sparse because new content is coming through more slowly. I still don't think that's *bad* because it lets me try other fun things without worrying about shorting my FFXIV experience.
