This is what ginny was supposed to be. teenagers arent easy to "like" (cuz what teen is at that age?) but what a good teen character (much like in real life) is that they grow and that things arent very high stakes. Devi and most ,if not all, of the characters in this series are super realistic and well written. She is a traumatized teenager with a strict mother and comes from an immigrant family , so all she wants is to fit in and be cool in an environmen that's not the most understanding about trauma or any type of struggle, for that matter. And naturally, like many kids this age , she thinks fitting in and developing a cool social status is the most important thing .She also uses that as an excuse to not deal with her very real trauma anf grief and appear "normal". Also her mother: not a perfect parent but cares a lot about Devi but just doesn't know what to do. That is very well done. She struggles , doesnt show it but still falls apart, seeks help. Very well done show , definately did not expect it to be nice, I thought it was another shallow "American teens fuck around" show but it makes you think about the characters and what's behind their actions.
Tbh I didn't like her character in the beginning but end up liking her in the end. Sure she only got a little development but she can still learn and hopefully not settle for less or make dumb choices
As someone who lost their brother when they were 13 as soon as I was getting into high school, I can’t help but empathize with Devi. Of course her grief is no excuse for treating her friends so badly, but some of what she said out loud I often said in my head when my friends were venting about their issues. It’s easy to feel isolated when all your friends are at a completely different point than you are emotionally and mentally, and this is exacerbated even further due to high school drama and emotions. I’m 22 now and can definitely reflect on my friends and experiences, but it really is just a different level of perspective when you’ve experienced something so serious and you’re surrounded by the trivial aspects of high school that are meant to feel so significant.
I saw this on my feed a long time ago, was searching for it and finally it popped up again, great video. Also i think this makes devi unique because she is a normal teen with flaws, not every character should be some portray of "good girl" cause in real life teenagers are actually messed up lol. Fact though.
why does everytime a female character is selfish people istantly hate on her so much?? characters arent supposed to be good people, theyre supposed to be interesting. but people seem to have this standard when its women. theres so many male characters like this and no one bats an eye or just call them badasses

2:00 was like music to my ears. Seeing a teen protagonist in a Netflix show being held accountable for their actions is as rare as a unicorn sightibg
Devi is a icon fact
why does everytime a female character is selfish people istantly hate on her so much?? characters arent supposed to be good people, theyre supposed to be interesting. but people seem to have this standard when its women. theres so many male characters like this and no one bats an eye or just call them badasses
i dont see a lot of people saying that. i mean everyone seems to agree devis self centered but they also agree that its just her being a well written teenager cuz a lot of teenagers are self centered
@@yerrrrrrrr4567 "they" who? lots of people hate her. and i mean, LOTS.
@@ki3497 if you think thats rare you arent paying attention or youre just focusing on the netflix bubble.
It has nothing to do with her being a female character. she's just a very unlikable person
@@hotcheetosandtakis730 it does because people usually dont complain about unlikeability in male characters who do the same
At least the show lets her suffer the consequences for it, I think they made her this way so that she can improve in her behavior eh hopefully
EXACTLY! She’d be unlikeable if she got away with shit like so many other Netflix heroines do. The self awareness in the writing is just amazing!
I feel like Devi talking to Paxton abt him being a better student is kinda true tho.. I don’t think it’s fair Paxton blames her for failing when it’s his own test…
The character was written so well, it dawned on me that my intense dislike of her as a viewer was a reflection of how much she disliked herself.
why do I still like her better than aneesa
Probably because we have gotten to know her more as character. Plus it’s always easier to root for the underdog
I don't care about other people say... I love Devi....
I’m always going to be a Devi apologist 😭💜
i still love her tho :(
I couldn't stand her in season 1, but in season 2 I feel like she has changed quite a bit and maybe in season 3 we will see her being less selfish.
not devi saying her shit's bigger when fab was about to come out to her 😭
Tbh Aneesa was doing to much. Like nobody was even thinking about it until that kid said something yet still tried to fault Devi for it. After that I would’ve just let her move
As a woc I really wanted to like devi and the show overall but her selfiness kills the vibe among other things.
Exactly! I get the trauma side, but, it's not like she doesn't have anyone to talk to or has to supress her feelings. She is just a jerk to everyone and they still seem to like her!!
@@abhigyagupta9499 yessssss
@@abhigyagupta9499 her character is well written imo, u never see characters who are flawed and often try to please the whole audience which ends up with a flawed or boring character
@@abhigyagupta9499 some of things she does bcoz she misses her dad. But it's not like all she does is to handle grief. She is desperate to find a bf and she wants to have a perfect bf. All she does is for that not to handle grief always. Even if her dad would be alive she would have done many of the things.
I just love how every character matters in that movie and has it's own development.
Not like emily in paris that was a complete sh!t.
Emily in Paris could actually worked if it had even a fraction of the self awareness in Never Have I ever. Just imagine it being about a clueless, entitled American who gets humbled and educated by working in another country.
I know sometimes teenagers are selfish and in swing mood but she is really in another level she is may be a bad person but extra bad with the hormones
0:23 that hit correctly 💀
If the character annoying you,it's because she acted well❤️
Desis can never be chill 🙌😂 We always Problematic 🙌
She had the best friend in Kamala.. sad that she's so unwilling to empathise with anyone
I hope she has a character development in s2
she is a good person and all but still
At least the show is not painting her as a can do no wrong... Everyone is constantly saying her that she is being a jerk and though they understand their is a limit to their tolerance
But I think there's still hope for the show!
I think she would have been super jealous if daxton and aneesa date as well. I have the feeling it wasn't about ben but just that she couldnt stand that her ex was dating a new Indian girl so she would have acted the same even if it was paxton
season 3 davi had so much development
I don't like Devi, not because her dad died doesn't mean she needs to be a shit person to people.
0:45 lmfao the way she says "you racist"
Devi is a good character and the actress is a good actress, especially when you have a love and hate relationship with the main character. Paxton makes my blood boil sometimes but I also really love his character and his actor is really adorable like my heart when I see him
I like how she helped aneesa out by embarrassing herself and that she was alone at he dance until paxton came along. However it was difficult to rewatch the show completely because of how selfish she was.
I honestly don't agree with how they handled Devi "starting" a rumor about Aneesa. Insulting her one time does not start a rumor. Starting a rumor means repeating a malicious story to multiple people in the hope that they spread it around. Ben's shitty ex and her friend started the rumor.
She is self centered and problematic but i still cannot hate her
its just a show she seems like a really sweet person irl
Y is ppl taking things so far 🆙 their rear end. Her character is different than the typical main character that is always created with the same oh bs. She is also developing into a better person. Character improvement in a different level and not so typical. For each is own, everyone is entitled to their opinions
She gets me so mad I REALLY REALLY hope she has a character development...
She could be self-centered all the time, I would care, It's cute!
omg I can't wait for season 3 to come out!!
Lowkey I would rather have a messy ass protagonist who pays for her mistakes than those Mary sues.
yall dont get my girl ...
Honestly I’m surprised this video isn’t 3 hours long
She annoys the hell out of me but it's kind of understandable
Muchhh better than Ginny hehe
Devis so self centered it just doesn't end. I'm waiting for her to get slapped like Ginny, shes grieving & lashing out yes, but she needs to get her shit together before she does more damage. Having trauma in your life isn't an excuse to traumatize everyone else.
Could you please post some of her sad scenes. (like her crying scenes)
I don't think she was self-centered when she came clean to Aneesa, I think she was reallly brave.
She just makes stupid, regrettable choices imo
Honestly, I think she shouldn't be dating anyone and needs to be in an intensive therapy program...
She is the most toxic character i have ever seen
as she should
Everyone says team devi, paxton, ben but bitch nalini is the real main character.
Devi is so pretty and beautiful I really they make a reboot of the series they need more American Indian teen shows or make it a lead indian co starting friend show
Only the disclaimer is sufficient...
This selfishness is a lot do with her emotional damage
Devi can be pretty selfish but some of this stuff is taken out of context.
I feel like she shouldn’t have gotten into Princeton. She had been obsessing over it so much that she almost ruined her friendship with Fabiola and Aneesa. And for what? The prestige? It would have shown her character development if she realized the college itself doesn’t matter, but what her calling is in life; what she plans to study and how she plans to apply it.
I'm sorry but when she yelled at Paxton, she was kind of right. They guy always need support to do something, it's quite annoying.
She wasn't wrong about the Paxton's failing tho
Seriously Devi was awful sometimes, but in 1:20 she was right.
I think you mistyped, it’s ’Devi being self-centered for TWO whole seasons straight’
I hatte devi so much. She cheated on Ben but she doesn’t want aneesa to be with Ben. I hate Devi so much. So damn much. She is my least favourite character
no but I still love her anyway
That is “FUCKIN HARAM”
Add an “L” at the end of Devi’s name and what do you get? 😏
I don’t always dislike Devi but I HATED her when she got jealous of a needs and Ben even tho she cheated on Ben
*Aneesa
This is so painful to watch. 🤧
