    Ok but notice how in the first season, Devi was mostly self centered with her friends, shutting them out and doing everything for the boys' attention. But in the second season, Devi ignored Paxton to help her friends and aneesa and went out of her way to help aneesa stay in school. At the dance she went by herself and was happy to let her friends go out and dance with their dates while she stayed behind. You can't ignore the growth she's had and the consequences she's suffered, which is why her bad decisions don't make me dislike her completely

    Devi lacks guidance she needs as her father is dead.
    You see the dreams where her father advices her and then she makes up for her mistakes.
    If he had existed, he would have made her take right decisions.
    It's the result of absence of one of the parents who was close to Devi.

    • @dss6838
      @dss6838 3 роки тому +29

      That's a big deal. We really don't understand how much we depend, especially as a teenager on our parents for guidance.
      I was practically raised by my grandpa, he would drop me to school, pick me up. He would help me in homework and even mend my little feuds with friends. I lost him, with a massive guilt that I was rude when he asked me about my grades, they weren't great. So I said, why you care as I was angry on him for kicking my dad out of ancestral property.
      Little did I know that he would be on ventilator after that and I won't ever see him again. As a 12 year old, I had no idea what it did to me. As I grew up my heart ached more. To the point I couldn't respect myself. It took decades to forgive myself.
      Teenagers are smart enough to understand death and naive enough to live with the aftermath.

    I think Devi is one of the most well written female protagonists. She messes up a lot and has her friends call her out. She even tries to fix them yet ends up in deeper trouble. But this shows how realistic Devi is. She is one of the relatable teenage characters. Usually Netflix only features Mary Sue protagonists who are never wrong.

    This is what ginny was supposed to be. teenagers arent easy to "like" (cuz what teen is at that age?) but what a good teen character (much like in real life) is that they grow and that things arent very high stakes. Devi is selfish and kinda annoying, but its never anything malicious. just genuine naiveness and lack of confidence in what she wants. so while I was rolling my eyes at some scenes, i never felt like it was unrealistic and understood where she was coming from. maybe tho the writers should try to focus on some positive aspect of her personality in upcoming arcs not just her faults.

    • @anj.h3087
      @anj.h3087 3 роки тому +79

      @@seaweedbrain3892 I think the similarity is that they are both teens in high school who have dealt with trauma and are going through a lot of changes (both live with a single mom and have a missing dad) which causes them to make dumb and selfish decisions. however I think ginny is wayyy worse of a character than Devi; ginny makes everything about her and thinks that only she has gone through tough times and downplays everyone else's experiences (ex: abby) and in my opinion, she has no redeeming qualities. On the other hand Devi is overall a good friend who recognizes her faults, accepts that she has made mistakes, and tries to fix them, has to earn back people's trust, and actually apologizes to her friends. And I can think of many positive qualities for Devi, but with ginny, I can think of none

    I adore her character because of this. Loosing a parent especially at such a young age could truly ruin any person. She lost someone she loved most, its pretty clear that she loved her dad more than her mom (the show also being about growing to appreciate her mom more) so of course she's messed up.
    Does not excuse her actions? No of course they dont, however I can sympathize with her situation and understand why she does the things she does. She's pretty messed up, all over the place, not to mention puberty and other hormonal crap isn't helping her, shes all over the place.
    She's a great written character, because of how realistic this is.

      I was gonna point that out actually watching this video. Most stuff she’s done throughout the season were self centered, but I’d say she was right to tell Paxton off after being mad at her for failing that quiz. She did promise to help him study, but never got around to it so I’d say that part was wrong, but I agreed with everything she told him, because it’s true. Wanna get good grades, you gotta be a good student 🤷🏽‍♀️ and I actually liked the fact that she finally broke and told Aneesa the truth about how the rumor spread (which is what she should have done in the first place). Gotta give her props for realizing that what she did was wrong and holding herself accountable, and overall had good character development this season. As stated in season 2 her mom was the breadwinner of the home and she couldn't spend enough time with devi and devi couldn't take that trauma and couldn't share her feelings with her Mom. Thats why she shares her feelings with her friends and Devi needs a little extra support and does what she thinks is right only to regret it later but she does realised her mistake and try to make things right.

    Devi and most ,if not all, of the characters in this series are super realistic and well written. She is a traumatized teenager with a strict mother and comes from an immigrant family , so all she wants is to fit in and be cool in an environmen that's not the most understanding about trauma or any type of struggle, for that matter. And naturally,like many kids this age , she thinks fitting in and developing a cool social status is the most important thing .She also uses that as an excuse to not deal with her very real trauma anf grief and appear "normal". Also her mother: not a perfect parent but cares a lot about Devi but just doesn't know what to do. That is very well done. She struggles , doesnt show it but still falls apart,seeks help. Very well done show , definately did not expect it to be nice, I thought it was another shallow "American teens fuck around" show but it makes you think about the characters and what's behind their actions.

    As someone who lost their brother when they were 13 as soon as I was getting into high school, I can’t help but empathize with Devi. Of course her grief is no excuse for treating her friends so badly, but some of what she said out loud I often said in my head when my friends were venting about their issues. It’s easy to feel isolated when all your friends are at a completely different point than you are emotionally and mentally, and this is exacerbated even further due to high school drama and emotions. I’m 22 now and can definitely reflect on my friends and experiences, but it really is just a different level of perspective when you’ve experienced something so serious and you’re surrounded by the trivial aspects of high school that are meant to feel so significant.
