"I don't think we're going to make it" | Backpacking to Matterhorn Peak (Hoover Wilderness, CA)

- So... there's this mountain... it's epic, it's menacing, and its 12280ft tall - and we wanted to climb it!
So we hopped in the overlanding rig, drove to Bridgeport, CA and started our adventure into the Hoover Wilderness. We camped in the truck, backpacked to a pristine alpine lake, and tried our best to scramble to the top of this thing. Grab a cup of coffee, kick back, and listen to our story of how it all went down. Enjoy! :)

I need your help! UA-cam hasn't been recommending my videos as often because I recently changed my content to be more outdoors based. If you're enjoying these videos please do me a huge favor and hit the thumbs up and click subscribe. It doesn't cost you anything and it is the very best way you can help me convince the ol "algorithm" that people like to see these videos. I really appreciate it!
Also, watch to the end to see how I'm getting some of these shots lol :)
That was actually funny, Appreciate the detail. What microphone are you using? It's pretty cool to be able to hear all the single steps. Or do you edit them in?
@@bjarkearens861 RODE videomicro!
@@codyandvictoria Thanks!
Dude... I came here because of these outdoor videos!! Amazing
Subbed already but like and comment done! :)
Love your outdoor content. It feels very authentic and relatable not all influencery and fake. And the quality is top-notch!
I really like that you add a bit of camera shake to the tripod shots. Makes it feel like there is a 3rd person there recording your journey. Cool touch!
I actually thought there was a third person at first ngl
Better than any movie or show! Your channel helps me to slow down and appreciate little things in life. BTW, we have the same tent as you guys - very light and practical. And sometimes when we wake up in the morning and open a fly sheet, we are amazed at the views we forgot we were coming nearby. It is super cool just to lay down inside and occasionally check the views from the corner of your eye.
Jack Kerouac and some friends tried the Matterhorn and told the story in "The Dharma Bums". They went up Horse Creek to the southwest side -- a longer scramble (with maybe a little bushwhacking) than the north face. Back in those days, and up until maybe 1980, there was another natural wonder in the area. Just up from the creek was an imposing terminal moraine with a small glacier beyond. The streambed below the ice could be accessed from the side through an open crevasse. Exploring that world for maybe 100 yards was like spelunking an opalescent castle -- really luminous.
Also, bear canisters hadn't yet been developed, but we did see a cub slumming down by the store at twin lakes once!
Holy shit. I read that book and that's awesome!
To answer your question on twitter, YES its worth it! Great video. Please consider that it might not be so "rewarding" in terms of performance, however is so much more "rewarding" in terms of our enjoinment. Much love my friend.
You're the best dude. I appreciate it
It must be great to have a partner to count on when the hike gets tough! You two make a great couple! Keep it up and excited to see more videos.
Cody this video is so awesome. To see you working together warms my heart dude. To have a teammate is everything in this world, and y'all really make a good team. Ok yeah the visuals and just sheer magnitude of this hike is also just frigging incredible, so absolute mad admiration for the art.
Dude having a wife who is up for these adventures is the greatest gift in the world!
Killer video. The journey is everything! I always try to explain to people, the places you don’t have to work hard to get to, you will always forget. I can’t tell you how many places I’ve drove to, got out, looked, and forgotten. But when you roll an ankle, scrape up your knees, have to carry everything you need to get there and survive on your back, and rely on a partner to keep pushing you, you’ll never forget it. It makes it immeasurably better. And to capture the journey, failures, decisions, and filming logistics, along they way, that’s super special.
The fact that you’re able to appreciate life, nature, and all it’s beauty..
That’s happiness.
Indeed it is. We're super fortunate!
V
You guys are so lucky to have each other and enjoy the same things! Thank you for sharing your life's journey ❤️
Adding the going back to camera shots really put into perspective the effort to make this video. Major major props. Beautiful video!
Thanks for watching to the end 🤙🏼
BEAUTIFUL GUYS! Just beautiful.
Wow those sights were STUNNING! You guys are brave hiking all that way! Great vid as always
Meanwhile I'm wishing I shot slog 😅 you guys make it look so good!!
@@codyandvictoria haha your footage always looks on point!
It was actually so emotional for me as well when you summitted. wow.
awesome video as always. Loving the warm welcoming vibe. The truck is taking shape also. Love it.
🙏🏼
Well done guys. I came over from the UK in the late 90’s to climb Matterhorn as I was a big Kerouac fan. I came way to early in the year and never got out of the valley due to the snow! I’ve always regretted that I never got up there!
Oh well, can’t have it all 🤪
Wow, obviously lots of steep scree! I spend 2-3 weeks each year in the Dolomites so I definitely know how it feels to climb up a steep mountainside covered in scree. It can get quite annoying after some time. Congrats for not giving up!
Just being there is Epic that camp spot looking at it was Unbelievably Amazing
I saw your a6000 video because I was skeptical if it was a good camera and after watching ur video I was sold and have had it for about a month I’m glad I made the decision to get it
“Best mountain wife” I’m in tears I Iove the love 💟
He's the best😍
-V
Hoover wilderness is a hidden gem in my opinion and I'm looking forward to seeing it covered in white🙊 Cant wait to climb another one with you 💪
I like your videos guys and that mountain was a climb even from my computer. Great work on chasing that camera all over the place. Victoria...you are so cute. Cody you have to be the luckiest dude ever.
I really liked seeing the two attempts. It’s important to know when to turn around and when to push a little further. Some people might have just shown the “successful” day but that wouldn’t have given the whole picture. Beautiful video as always.
Great adventure, storytelling, music....love it! Bummer about the smoke. Our home base is in Oregon so we had a few smokey adventures ourselves.
Beautiful place. Great video. I came for the video/photo editing, and I'm staying for the outdoor content!
You're the best dude! I appreciate you sticking around
Rookie mistakes makes the best stories. I have a lot of those in my backpack. Love your channel for being more outdoorish. Keep up the good work and adventures.
Amazing video as always and great work on scaling that mountain!
Hi Cody and Victoria,
Congratulation you made it!!!
Thanks for sharing these stunning sights for us, I pretty like the chill and comfortable vibe in this camping vlog!
btw I'm Taiwanese UA-camr, let me know if you came to Taiwan in the future, I would like to introduce the beauty of Taiwan to you, all the best cheers💙
Beautiful trip and such calm and warm atmosphere...
Great video! I have to admit I am liking these videos more than the tutorials and I really liked the tutorials.
Dope Hike! Super inspring, makes me wanna just go for it and start hiking again!
Excellent story/photography , inspiring . Keep making your storys.
Hello my outdoors friends, thank you for sharing this adventure video. Congratulations, you made it to the top. That was quite an accomplishment. The very best to both of you. Take care and stay healthy. 🤗
Every time I see a post from this channel I get a little more happy ☺️
Amazing view !! 💕
I don't think it's possible for you two to post a bad video.. It's like watching short films every time. Love it.
Best Mountain Hiking Wife ever! LOL What a climb!
This is another amazing video from you guys ! We absolutely love the outdoor content that you make, and thanks for sharing all those amazing adventures you can go on... Keep it up !! And love the "battery saving" part, we can relate ! 😂
so awesome, nice to see the log book at the top. #geocaching so inspiring. I am editing my camping trip from last week right now.
Awesome journey and awesome video! Thanks for sharing guys!
Amazing hike guys, glad you made it and thank you for taking us along.
Your videos makes me relax and I always watch it before i go to sleep🍃

This was so great to watch! The music selection was really spot on throughout the whole video.
at 156k subs, this channel is still a hidden gem, not for long
🙏🏼🙏🏼
I am so happy to see beautiful nature through your video. Thank you.
Just finished. Every minute spent editing was a minute well spent. Fantastic. The production quality was superb. That font 👌🏻 perfect. Well done guys.
ANDY!! You're the best dude. I appreciate that. New favorite font right there.
those 'RUNNING FOR THE CAMERA' shots are cracking me up!😂😂 Absolutely amazing!
I do my share of mountineering (I have a few vids on my YT channel) and the views from the summits rarley fail to impress they have been some of my favourite moments in life and I was gutted for you guys when you failed and then so pleased when you made it the next day, I'd have to agree with Cody Victoria is "best mountain wife" thanks for sharing the adventure guys.
It truly felt so good to accomplish the hike and stand on top of that peak! It also left us wanting to do more. Go bigger, learn more skills. Mountaineering is another level and I think we're going more towards that direction☺️ Thanks for rooting for us💙
-V
Love how you guys showed the struggle with climbing a peak and shots of coming back for the camera. Keep up the great work.
Thats an effort going back to to camera! Thanks for the video:)
First video of yours I've seen. Really cool editing and format. Subbed!
Welcome and thanks for watching 🙏

Hope y’all enjoyed the coffee! Yet another awesome video, and smashed that thumbs up for good measure. 😊 👍
Dude honestly probably my favorite coffee ☕ Soo good!! Thanks for checking out the video
Seriously, one of the most flavorful cups of coffee we've ever had💙 Thank you!
The shot in the arm chairs is so perfect 👌 👌 👌
Vibes and authenticity just seem to get better every time bro!
That's the goal man. One video at a time
I climbed this baby back in August!! It’s such an epic climb... I tried taking the route right up the face like you did and got stranded in some high country up there but somehow ended up finding a way down. I settled with the easier side of the mountain... crazy (kinda scary) views from the top!
That was great! This is the first one of your videos that I’ve seen, and I have subscribed. I absolutely love that area. Every year in late October, we rent a cabin near Bridgeport. We love hiking in the Hoover Wilderness; the Barney Lake trail is just beautiful, with a lot of variety in terrain and vegetation in just a couple of miles.
Thanks for watching us! When we were thinking of a place to go backpacking, it was between the Grand Tetons and Hoover Wilderness 😂 We're glad we checked out this wilderness area that was closer to home because it was truly amazing!
Great video! Looks like such a fun time y'all! Also, the running to grab the cam scene at the end was hilarious.
Do not! Do not stop making these videos. Love all your videos
Try our best
Nice video. Great scenery and well produced.
Hey. New fan as of tonight. But.....BIG fan! Fantastic production quality and content is epic. Keep it up.
Welcome Scott! Thanks for checking it out 🤙🏼

I'm so inspired by your lifestyle, I've lived in Sacramento my whole life. When I'm done with college I'm off to Tahoe!
First time here. I'm impressed and sold on Fall as well. My favorite season. My new favorite channel.
Amazing. Wow. I like this one because you almost didn’t make it. That persistence! So inspiring.
Still one of our favorites 🙌🏼
Great video! One of my favorite summits!
Hey Cody & Victoria, greetings from Australia. My wife and I really love your videos! We noticed that you guys have the lightweight tent from NF that we also bought last year. Unfortunately, we had to return the tent as we found the flooring isn't very durable. They tore on our first overnight hike! Luckily NF agrees that its a defect from their end and gave us a refund. It's probably a bad batch but just a heads up to always check on the flooring for any tear before your long and hard hikes!
Stay safe!
Hey! Thanks for the heads up! We've had that tent for over a year now and it's treated us well so it probably was a defect on NF end😕 stay safe and well!
-V
Hell yes that was awesome you two! Worth the effort I say.
Your videos are inspirational. Love them. Favorite creators.
Love the new camp table! Great video as always!
you noticed! :P
So good, you two. Loved watching this. Thanks for creating it.
One of my favorite videos so far. Keep up the great work guys!!! Once the smoke clears maybe you’ll be able to go back to Tahoe? **Coughing in Reno**
Sometimes I look at Cody's arms and think to myself, God I wish i had biceps like Victoria. Jokes aside, another cracking video... hope UA-cam starts promoting this channel again!
Haha! Damn man we haven't been to the gym since this whole Covid thing 🤣🤣🤣
@@codyandvictoria damn! No gym is working! Must be lugging all the gear up mountains 🤣
いつも素敵なMovieありがとうございます🙏☺️どうぞ、お怪我の無いようにお気をつけください✨自然はいいですよね⛰
One of my new favorite channels. Currently binge watching.
Yeewwww! So glad to hear it 🙏🏼 hope you stick around
Very nice video and very motivating to go for a walk in the mountains
Walk in the mountains is the best therapy!
I thought you were speaking about the Matterhorn Peak in Switzerland at first and I was like wow Cody and Victoria in switzerland that's so cool!
I think it's a lot more sketchy but you definitely have to try it once!
Amazing. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Dudes, You are AMAZING. Thanks for sharing w your peeps.
Really love the look of the recent stuff
That looked awesome!! Love these outdoor vids mixed in with the filmmaking! Vibey
So cool guys! Well done!😁🙌
Hahaha this reminds me so much of a hike my boyfriend and I tried, we too made it on the second attempt. Another awesome video Cody, really love the new vibe of the channel!

GOAT VLOG - this was amazing!
You're the best my man!!! Hope you're doing well
What a beautiful location, loved the video, extra points for hiking up, getting the shot, then going back for the camera. Haha the things we do for a good shot 🤦
Think of all the times I did it and it didn't get into the video 🤪 haha thanks for watching
This is an awesome and inspiration video! Found my next channel to binge :)

Enjoy it man! It’s epic!
That truck's color is so 🔥
Victoria seems to be naturally funny. Lol
Not funny. Just nerdy🤓 haha
-V
what a video! Totally agree with you Victoria when you say that backpacking can be so empowering. We recently did a hike that I really didn't think I could finish, but when I did... best feeling in the world!! (Ps, can u guys do a car camping food video?? those tacos looked soooo good)
Nice job girl💪 More than anything, you just have to try. Oh and tacos are lliiiiffeeee!
Wow, did you guys just pack day backpacks in your packs? I'm also planning on backpacking to Matterhorn Peak, but in eastern Oregon! It'll be a day hike up to the summit. Also, you should read the book Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac, pretty sure they hike to this peak in it!
Hey ! I haven't really followed since a long time what you guys were up to, but always wanted to check out your "adventure" content. Really impressed of the quality of everything, from the narration to the image, it really is so dope ! Congratz, I feel really inspired. We love travelling by bike with my GF, and this strikes close to what we love :)).
I appreciate it man. Hope you can make some videos of those adventures
Beautiful story telling, guys....👍
Those tacos looked amazing! Recipe? Oh the hike and views are incredible too. Lol
We really need to do a recipe video 😂
