Of the many Marilyn Monroe movies that have been made, this is hands down the best. Andrew Dominik paid so much attention to the minutiae: the hair, makeup, clothing, jewels, props, etc... He even found people who look like the people who surrounded Marilyn. For instance, if you see the scene with Marilyn being helped to put on a corset, the woman who is putting the corset on Marilyn looks exactly like the original woman who put the corset on Marilyn. The other movies simply do not have the same level of quality control.
I am glad I can see this video to admire how much they made her look like Marylin Monroe, plus the amazing job she did moving and acting just like her... the movie will never watch it though, don't need those constant sex and rape images in my head.

I just finished this film. Although based highly on a book, there were many scenes that were true life experiences. My mother often spoke of her untimely demise, and knowing what I know now, a lot of these scenes, are not far fetched. Norman Jean's mother and her both suffered from mental illnesses and chemical abuse. As Marilyn, she was sexually objectified, abused and controlled by the vehicle of Hollywood. The movie shows just how pretentious the entertainment industry is, and I don’t doubt she had some dark experiences depicted in the film, pulled from the novel. Now onto the content: Amazing use of light and color to evoke a mood. Gives me a bit of Sin City vibes from 2005 with Jessica Alba. A technicolor dream of cinematography, and the delicate use of cgi to successfully enhance the great visuals. Its hard to tell if you're watching a contemporary film, or stock footage of Marilyn herself. The figuratively designed world, is emotionally mesmerizing, and I found it hard to turn away, even during painful moments. Most specifically, the end of the movie which also takes place over her somber last day on earth. It leaves you still & empty & silent. I actually wept. I know this movie has received a lot of negative attention, but for me, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and did some of my own research on our real girl, because of this film. Dark • Moody • Noir It's clearly stated, this movie is based on the novel, and is meant to be watched with that in mind. It also brings to light the pain that she endured.
I think the film purposefully highlighted parts of our society that are particularly depraved and drove the woman through her misery. Even in death, we as a society demand entertainment value from her image and completely ignore her as a human being. I like how it subtly implicates us, the audience watching the film, as part of this problem. I personally like to think we could all learn a thing or two from her life and the way society treated her.

Well it's based on a Joyce Carol Oates book which is more or less fiction so yeah a lot of what was portrayed wasn't reality.

i dont get you people in the comments. even if we forget the fact that the movie was extremely disrespectul to marilyn and just focus on ana's acting, she did a terrible job. i have watched gentlemen prefer blondes 1000 times and i have seen the diamonds are a girls bestfriend performance even more. ana was nothing like marilyn. her movements are too soft. she lacks expression in her face, she looks clueless.
exactly. Nothing this actress did does any justice , not even remotely to Marilyn Monroe. She appears stiff, looks like she had to learn every move against her will , there is no softness and natural charm in her face. This biopic sucks on every ground.

I just finished this film. Although based highly on a book, there were many scenes that were true life experiences. My mother often spoke of her untimely demise, and knowing what I know now, a lot of these scenes, are not far fetched. Norman Jean's mother and her both suffered from mental illnesses and chemical abuse. As Marilyn, she was sexually objectified, abused and controlled by the vehicle of Hollywood. The movie shows just how pretentious the entertainment industry is, and I don’t doubt she had some dark experiences depicted in the film, pulled from the novel.
Now onto the content: Amazing use of light and color to evoke a mood. Gives me a bit of Sin City vibes from 2005 with Jessica Alba. A technicolor dream of cinematography, and the delicate use of cgi to successfully enhance the great visuals. Its hard to tell if you're watching a contemporary film, or stock footage of Marilyn herself. The figuratively designed world, is emotionally mesmerizing, and I found it hard to turn away, even during painful moments. Most specifically, the end of the movie which also takes place over her somber last day on earth. It leaves you still & empty & silent. I actually wept.
I know this movie has received a lot of negative attention, but for me, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and did some of my own research on our real girl, because of this film. Dark • Moody • Noir
It's clearly stated, this movie is based on the novel, and is meant to be watched with that in mind. It also brings to light the pain that she endured.
I think the film purposefully highlighted parts of our society that are particularly depraved and drove the woman through her misery. Even in death, we as a society demand entertainment value from her image and completely ignore her as a human being. I like how it subtly implicates us, the audience watching the film, as part of this problem. I personally like to think we could all learn a thing or two from her life and the way society treated her.
