No one ever talks about the 1990 World Cup where he dragged the worst Argentina squad ever to the World Cup final. He wasn't a striker in that team but played lower in the midfield with knee, ankle and toe injuries. He single handedly eliminated Brazil and was the "spiritual leader" in every single game. He was the most fouled player in the tournament and I'm not sure if he gave even one bad pass during the tournament. I will never forget the dribble and the pass to Caniggia in the Brazil game. He was constantly fouled and he just needed that 5 extra seconds free space that Brazil gave him.
Most of the 1986 team were playing in the Argentine league, Napoli were nobodys before he went to them , and look what he did. Messi played in great teams, surrounded by great players, Maradona played with average or poor teams and achieved greatness

Especially midfield (Troglio and Calderon). The defense was super tight and Monzon, Simon, Serrizuela never get the credit they deserve. Simon especially played an amazing tournament and was probably the best sweeper of the World Cup 1990. But defenders never get noticed.

I’ve watched football properly since I was a nine year old in 1978. Seen Kempes, Cruyff, Zico, Platini, Zidane, Brazilian Ronaldo and Messi and Ronaldinho and Portuguese Ronaldo. All the aforementioned were great great great footballers. Not one of them were on the same level as Maradona who won the World Cup in 1986.
Preach! I know its a cliche... but unfortunately younger kids won't ever really be able to fully appreciate how good he was and how he changed things. The stats can't show it. And internet highlight reels for almost every footballer these days can make it seem like they were ALL goats. But no 5 min highlight package can do justice to what it was like to watch Maradona on a football pitch between 86 and 90. You'd have to have known and have experienced what football was up to that point... and thereby understand how Maradona was like a footballing miracle sent down from the gods.

Some arguments for Diego as the GOAT had been explained in the video. Compared to recent years: pitches were terrible and the laws of the game were more permissive with fouls. I add that he always have average teammates, no one close to the GOAT debate. As for Pele, I think he did have great players in his teams. I'm 55 year old spaniard, canarian, I saw him live in Tenerife while his time in Sevilla '92, already in his 30s but still full of magic. I first knew of him when he came with Argentina to play the Spain '82 world cup, everybody was talking about this new sensation, and that autumn he came to play in Barcelona F.C. In that world cup we still had Zico and Rummenige, Platini and Socrates playing, but man!! Diego was something else. The moment you saw him barely touching the ball, the first second you realized he was an absolute master, that impact happened to me also with a lesser degree with Ronaldo Nazario years later, Redondo, Zidane, Pirlo, Gascoigne, Iniesta, Ronaldinho, Messi and many others. The thing is, I've seen Maradona in the 80s make moves and artistic things with the ball, specially his control of the ball in the air, between his legs, shoulders and head, while dribbling very aggresive opponents, that I've never seen those replicated before and after him. His technique was like Jimy Hendrix in the guitar, Mozart in Music composition, unparalleled. Only Pele and Maradona stand at the top of the summit, and I think Maradona was superior.

I’ve watched football properly since I was a nine year old in 1978. Seen Kempes, Cruyff, Zico, Platini, Zidane, Brazilian Ronaldo and Messi and Ronaldinho and Portuguese Ronaldo. All the aforementioned were great great great footballers. Not one of them were on the same level as Maradona who won the World Cup in 1986.
Preach! I know its a cliche... but unfortunately younger kids won't ever really be able to fully appreciate how good he was and how he changed things. The stats can't show it. And internet highlight reels for almost every footballer these days can make it seem like they were ALL goats. But no 5 min highlight package can do justice to what it was like to watch Maradona on a football pitch between 86 and 90. You'd have to have known and have experienced what football was up to that point... and thereby understand how Maradona was like a footballing miracle sent down from the gods.

I'm 55 year old spaniard, canarian, I saw him live in Tenerife while his time in Sevilla '92, already in his 30s but still full of magic.
I first knew of him when he came with Argentina to play the Spain '82 world cup, everybody was talking about this new sensation, and that autumn he came to play in Barcelona F.C.
In that world cup we still had Zico and Rummenige, Platini and Socrates playing, but man!! Diego was something else.
The moment you saw him barely touching the ball, the first second you realized he was an absolute master, that impact happened to me also with a lesser degree with Ronaldo Nazario years later, Redondo, Zidane, Pirlo, Gascoigne, Iniesta, Ronaldinho, Messi and many others.
The thing is, I've seen Maradona in the 80s make moves and artistic things with the ball, specially his control of the ball in the air, between his legs, shoulders and head, while dribbling very aggresive opponents, that I've never seen those replicated before and after him. His technique was like Jimy Hendrix in the guitar, Mozart in Music composition, unparalleled.
Only Pele and Maradona stand at the top of the summit, and I think Maradona was superior.
