I was in a blues band in 1996 and we were performing in England at BBC Midlands. Who walks in but Nils. He knew our guitar player (Andy Powell of Wishbone Ash) and asked if he could play with us. Andy handed him his spare guitar and the next 2 hours simply blew me away. Total professional and great sense of humor to boot. One of my favorite musical memories!
Great story. I once sold a Delay pedal to Andy Powell through Ebay 😂 He invited me to a Wishbone Ash gig in Duisburg Germany and I gave him the pedal there. Great evening. Very nice guy 👍
Andy Powell is a hell of a guitarist. Used to listen to his contribution on the night of the guitar album all day long as I was a teenager, many, many years ago
Here's a Nils Lofgren story. I went to a J Geils concert in Ann Arbor Mich. with front row seats in 1974. The warm up band was supposed to be The Rockets with Jim McCartey. They were replaced by Grin, Nils Lofrgens' band. I had all of the Grin albums & LOVED them. Nobody with me or anyone we met there had ever heard of them. When they were done, not only did they get a standing ovation. They received a drawn out, holding up lighters demand for more. What's unusual about this is, usually When J Geils is next, no matter how good the first band is, we're ready for J Geils to play. Not this crowd, it was J Geils can wait, we want more of this. Never seen that before or since. J Geils tore it up too. What a great night.
Same thing happened years ago when Charlie Daniels opened for J Geils Band. Charlie got everyone riled up and when J Geils took the stage, it was such a drastic change that Peter Wolf ended up waving Charlie Daniels back on the stage to play guitar with them for a song or two.
Most underated singer, composer, guitarist in the world.A genius who is worth much more than the rubbish that is pumped out by 'artists' who are only the product of a good A and R man and a very good recording engineer.
Underrated by Bruce Springsteen? Or by Neil Young? Or David Knopfler? Or Joe Walsh? Or Ringo Starr? These "underrated" comments are completely overrated
Incredible! That's how to play an acoustic guitar 🎸! The false harmonics get me every time. He has such an original technique. Lost count of the number of times I've watched this never get tired of it. Saw him live at the Glasgow Apollo back in the day. Keep on rocking Nils we're lucky to have you!
I'm 59 years old, I thought I knew who the good guitarists were, and who i like. Then, by a convoluted route, I come across THIS, and I am totally blown away. I am in the presence of Genius.
Totally agree. I’m 58. My son introduced me to this guy and this song loud on his Macintosh tube amp Gold monitor audio speakers and a high end dac...... I fell in love!! Still listening to this song .... love it. Brilliant!!
That's another level of playing from what you normally see. Exceptional talent and my god the sound of that Tack. Never heard an acoustic sound better.
I play his Best Of... album on vinyl quite frequently. I don't know that there is a more beautiful song than Shine Silently. But this song is so intimate and interesting. And this playing is like magic.
I'm proud to say I interviewed this incredible musician (over the phone, unfortunately; he was in Arizona, I was in Dublin) prior to his Face the Music tour in 2015. I've never had the pleasure to speak with a nicer, humbler and more obliging interviewee. He told me about how he got into playing music after seeing both Jimi Hendrix and the Who one weekend, how he snuck into a Neil Young concert, meeting Neil, playing him some Grin songs, and subsequently joining 7:12 Crazy Horse, how he came to play with Springsteen. It remains the highlight of my journalistic career (and I've also interviewed two Irish Prime Ministers, a deputy Prime Minister and the late actor Alan Rickman). And my name is Keith 🙂
WOW! Maybe it's you he is singing about...Nils must have recognized your genuine interest with thoughtful questions etc... I had the pleasure of knowing him in High School in Bethesda, Maryland. He is and always was a great guy Val Falcone...sings from his soul....
*Jim Dicky* ___ .... That sure is interesting info that deserves a like....especially since Nils wrote this highly concerned ode around & around '74 ,after having seen too much pictures of a happy & stoned Keef...... .......while Richards' unforgettable Canada sojourn was in '77...?
His guitar really speaks and sings naturally. And that, in a musically persuasive way. He delivers notes just right so that guitar breathes. I mean, everyone is convinced upon hearing this. He is good!
I saw Nils in the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen in the late 90’s. It was an acoustic set and it totally blew me away. He did KDG live and it was amazing. Lemon Tree was a small venue where you stood tight up to the low stage. Still listen to his Accoustic Live album. Totally timeless.
Nils, thank you so much for sharing your gift with us all these years! seeing that keith's still around, maybe he took heart to your message! you've always been a consummate performer and mind blowing talent! thanks again!
There are a few videos I come back to again and again, and this is one. Great song in both its electric and acoustic versions, but the acoustic is just so moody and dazzling. Thanks for composing, playing, and posting.
I remember buying the "cry tough" album in the late 70's and being impressed, then occasionally see Nils playing in the back ground in many top acts but gee this performance just blows me or any other guitarist totally away -- the maestro's maestro
Great Song,,,, got all your 8 tracks,,,, ,been a fan since I saw you open up for the band Boston at san Francisco cow palace in 1977,,,the first band was starcastle,,,,,,I was in the crowd ,,,,you were promoting I came to Dance,,,,, DK,,,,
Hi Mr. Nils. I write to him because I appreciate his music a lot. It seems like a prodigy and I thank him for sharing it with the people who admire him like me. Greetings from Madrid.
Saw Nils about 30 years ago I guess with his own band, bouncing of a trampolene occasionally. Have his early albums but this is amazing, up there with the best.
Heard Nils on the radio this week and just had to look him up, seems to me he IS the talent behind the E Street Band, boy can he play guitar. I need to see him live
I was just telling my 12 y.o. about the fabulous show in Raleigh and this popped up on Twitter. We are listening to it full-blast now. Great sound, great soul.
@Nils Lofgren You can clearly see and hear that you are the soul behind Bruce Springsteen and one of the main reasons for his success. The 2 best instruments in the world are the guitar and the voice, total class All the best from the UK and yes it's raining again :(
Bruce was already well famous before Nils joined the band but I agree with you......he is a hugely better guitarist than either Stevie Van Zandt (who he replaced when he went away to make it big on his own?!) or Springsteen. Not only that but he plays lots of other instruments as well. Go see him live without The E Street Band and you will love him. I've seen him around 20 times and he never fails to give a good show...….but he doesn't flip any more!!
Nils is absolutely fabulous, but he's not the reason for Springsteen's success. Personally I think Springsteen was at his very best pre 1980, at a time before Nils joined the band.
i diddnt know alot about nils, other the he was a member of crazy horse and the e street band.just never took the time to listen to his chops,he is so over the top talented, wow
WOW...You've got such an amazing voice, ever since the first time I heard you in Detroit, many many years ago, and then again in New York "if I should fall behind" your voice is as beautiful as your soul is, and let me say you are one gorgeous person. Ethan and I are so grateful for your kind words and for following us because we will be following you as long as you have a song to sing we have ears to listen.
In the 70s I was 18 dining at Caesars Palace in Vegas with my then employer and a few of his friends. A couple at our table asked me if I have heard of Nils, I said of course and what a talent he is.

Wow, I was impressed at Andy Powell, Nils is something else!!!!
Andy Powell is a hell of a guitarist. Used to listen to his contribution on the night of the guitar album all day long as I was a teenager, many, many years ago
Wow, great story! Lucky you.
Wow! Nils is one of my favorite underrated dudes and since last year I always thought he looked like a cute little elf!👍😍

Wow that is good yarn since J Geils is hard act to follow or go on before...show stealers
Same thing happened years ago when Charlie Daniels opened for J Geils Band. Charlie got everyone riled up and when J Geils took the stage, it was such a drastic change that Peter Wolf ended up waving Charlie Daniels back on the stage to play guitar with them for a song or two.
I grew up listening to Nils in the 80s. No-one had heard of him...
I am 55. just getting him..Better late than never eh?
Saw Grin's last performance at the Kennedy Center...with the most beautiful Woman on earth. Can't get any better .
Most underated singer, composer, guitarist in the world.A genius who is worth much more than the rubbish that is pumped out by 'artists' who are only the product of a good A and R man and a very good recording engineer.
I love him- he is underrated! I’ve been putting his songs out to the stratosphere.
Underrated by Bruce Springsteen? Or by Neil Young? Or David Knopfler? Or Joe Walsh? Or Ringo Starr? These "underrated" comments are completely overrated
He is a good musician and composer But cleary dont have a strong Lead vocal like Bruce for example. Thats Why he is à musician.
@@christofferwikberg2404 his voice at his peak was much better than springsteens

It humbles one, as a guitarist, to see another who plays so far above the rim...
I'm 59 years old, I thought I knew who the good guitarists were, and who i like. Then, by a convoluted route, I come across THIS, and I am totally blown away.
I am in the presence of Genius.
Check out the Grin records, some great stuff there...
Are you joking. Where do you live. Which cave. Only kidding! I've loved Nils since 1974 and reckon he's rock's most under rated guitarist. Period.

Saw Springsteen last night. Nils stole the show with a ridiculous solo... Underrated guitarist.
not underratet, only less known...

Definitely not underrated!
Bravo!
This wee man is never underrated by fans and musicians who know what he’s all about, indeed he is a magician 🎸
That's another level of playing from what you normally see. Exceptional talent and my god the sound of that Tack. Never heard an acoustic sound better.
listening to his guitar feels like a dream ..........................................superb
It's like discovering a group of hidden people in deep jungle. Almost NO contact with modern world! That'd be Twilight Zone for certain!
that was really really really fricken good.
love it! heard the song many times from other people's Hifi and shocked how beautiful the soundtrack is!
Nils is one of the most natural, soulful, heartfelt and amazing guitarist/vocalists I’ve ever heard!
He’s just unbelievable!
Absolute legend, this wee man is . Met him after one his gigs in Edinburgh a few years ago , what a true gentleman he was 👍
And he's from my hometown
One of my favorites. And one of my favorite guitar players. Thank you Nils.
The great Nils makes me old still great rob
Started playing guitar again after 14 years with this song :)
Truly amazing! Saw Nils in the 70's with 38 Special and Dicky Betts, But we only went to see Nils.
No idea how many times I've listened to this. Countless. Never grow tired of it.
I play his Best Of... album on vinyl quite frequently. I don't know that there is a more beautiful song than Shine Silently. But this song is so intimate and interesting. And this playing is like magic.
Speechless... Wonderful!

I love the pinch harmonics in 3:00 - 3:27. His guitar playing in this is exemplary in this..

First ever albums I ever bought were Nils albums when I was in my teens and early twenties. Still big fan today in 2023. I'm 61 yrs old now.
Me too.
The guitar- some make it talk, some its an extension of themselves but with Nils its as easy as breathing...
what a song - what a man
Saw him live with Neil Young in Bordeaux 1982, brilliant memory. Who are the 6 idiots pressing dislike??
The idiots probably like that electronic canned crap.

Nils Lofgren, "what Chuck Berry is to Keith Richards is what Keith is to me"
Brilliantly talented man !
Nils
Master guitar player. You know a guy is great when he can play a basic acoustic guitar and play that great.
Best track of it's kind...ever. Period.
Love Nils guitar playing and his voice... He is AMAZING !!!
I love this tune and this version is absolutely amazing!
Pure magic - have followed Nils since I saw him in the Neil Young 'Live in Berlin' VHS. Such a professional in all facets of his life.

I have not listened to Nils for a very long time. He is still brilliant.
Hugely talented musician. Master of his craft.
Just the two hands? How is that even possible? You were very good in Dorking (look it up). And without doubt the coolest man on the planet. Thank you.
