  • Nick Richards was a DJ for Radio Caroline, an unlicensed offshore radio station operating off the coast of the UK. This was the late 1970s, and millions of people were tuning in, but there were problems with the ship. Because of its illegal status, it couldn’t go to shore for repairs, and it was rotting below the waterline. The DJs did their best to keep the ship afloat, until they faced one storm too many. Nick spoke to Outlook’s Harry Graham.
As broadcast on the BBC World Service 23 September 2021

Those pirate ships gave us youngsters so much pleasure back in the 60's. Wedgwood Benn destroyed our pleasure and that eventually gave birth to BBC radio 1 etc. I remember hearing Ike and Tina's song River Deep Mountain High being played so very often, a song at the time I hated but hey ho, that was then and this is now 2021. Great days.

I lent my mate Brian ('Anderson') two albums, 'Nice' by The Nice & 'Orange' by Al Stewart, when he was a DJ earlier in the 70's.
When he left the station he forgot to take them with him so, no doubt, they're still in the Mi Amigo now (well, the sleeves may've rotted away!).

Interesting anecdote from Nick. People always remember the big names (Andy Archer, Spangles Muldoon, etc.) in the frugal years between 1972 until the sinking, but there was a fairly constant rotation of 'hopefuls' - young men with variable talent but eager to work on Caroline for nothing. I don't think anyone has the full list of these guys, they're forgotten in time, some only staying one tour between tenders (or escaping on little supply boats that helped out from the UK). I'm glad I wasn't there at the end, sounds scary and emotional.

Pirate radio drove my dear old Dad (God rest his soul) absolutely bonkers mental.
'Get them in the bloody Army, long haird layabouts, YEAH YEAH, BABY BABY ! GRRRR. .
WELL....now, all these years later....we ungrateful generation of long haird louts are being castellated by this new generation of Woke knobsticks.
    Well.....? ?
Oh yes..our Generation promoted more towards racial equality that any generation in history. Black music was oppressed until ...THE MOTOWN SOUND.
    Any questions ?
Oh yes...and we stopped the bloody Vietnam war.

If you’d listened to the whole thing, they start talking about it around the 30 minute mark.

From 23:45 you get the context of the state of the ship and a few minutes later the story of the sinking starts.
