It has so many advantages based on its chemical properties: relatively low storage pressures for liquid at room temperature, ease of moving it from one tank to another as a liquid, long storage life, simplicity of the mechanisms needed to use it for heat, excellent storage density for a gaseous fuel, very little soot when burned in an internal combustion engine (=> less maintenance), the list goes on and on. It also makes a decent refrigerant working fluid.
