Exploring a secluded New Zealand river [fossil hunting]

- I headed down to a new area near Christchurch to see if there were any cool fossils around, I knew I was in for a long day as I had to walk quite a few kilometers as well as find a route through some really thick bush. Luckily, some sheep had left a trail I could follow which took me to some interesting out crops with fossils in them.

That was a fun hunt, even if you didn't find anything. You never know unless you go out and look! Thanks for taking us along!
You have to go explore new session every now and again 😀
Mamlambu is the best fossil hunter. Legendary
Hahahah thanks mate, I wouldn't say the best but maybe enthusiastic 🤣
Looks like a beautiful place to spend the day. Whether or not you find anything. 👍👍
Yep, those were rose hips. Good source of vitamin C. Good day for a walk in the bush, and you learned what a wasp nest looks like. All around, I'd call that a win.
I definitely did learn that!!
Rose hip is very common in Sweden. We make juice (actually called “rose hip soup” in the store)of them and have it warmed up, with small almond biscuits and whipped cream, ice cream or thick yoghurt.
That sounds delicious!!
@@MamlamboFossils It’s a great drink to have in your thermos on cold winter days, out skiing. My generation (born in the early 60s) was brought up on “nyponsoppa” rose hip soup.
YUM! now you've done it, i'm hungry. haha Cheers!
You have to strain them because they have these annoying tiny hairs inside that irritate your mouth.
Thanks for taking us along...different rocks and such 😮
Such a beautiful day for a hike and a special gift to come along with you! Love the videos thank you
Even if you didn't find fossils, the stunning nature makes it worth anyways! Thank you for taking us with you :)
Good choice avoiding those berries. Rule of noshing on the unknown in the forest, " Red Means Dead".
I am pretty sure that was a rose hip .. possibly dog rose.. we have lots growing in the hedge rows over here in the UK 👍 great video. Looks like you are having some lovely weather..
Looks like a bovine(cow) humerus, although it could be equine(horse). You're pretty spot on with that guess
Thanks! I was thinking cow giving how solid it was!
Lovely video! I enjoy them, it teaches me what to keep an eye out for when I eventually go fossicking myself :)
Awesome vid, those berries looked like rosehips to me. I believe the one you have found is called a wild briar bush in Christchurch. Usually, the berry is abundant on hillsides of Otago during late autumn and through winter. Nice find! Makes yum jelly :)
My parients had different types of Rosehips in their garden... It makes great wine and can also make jam with them. Unfortunately not used as much as years gone past. Always learning from your channel... Some how I missed this episode.
Glad you ended up finding it!
Great video mate! I learn so much from you! Thank you!
I always enjoy your videos 😊
The close captioning said hello everyone this is Rubber bird. Lol!!!!!
beautiful countryside, sunny day time well spent
Looks like rosehips to me. If you eat them raw, be sure to open it up and scrape the little hairs out of the middle first. They can be irritating coming out!
I can confirm that those are Rose Hips, you can make a nice jam with them.
Thanks Jason!
yup those are rosehips! make a really nice jam as well
Thanks!!!
Those are rose hips, but i'm not sure i'd ever eat them fresh as i've been told that the fur on the seeds can be extremely itchy
That was a nice little jaunt. I hope you didn't get scratched up going through the jungle. Keep having fun!
Hahah I did get pretty scratched up 😀
My son came back from his UC Geology 101 field trip today and said you were on it !
You may not have found a lot of stuff but it's still a beautiful place thank you for sharing this six stars brother
My pleasure Joseph!
That’s a rose hip alright but scrape away the furry seeds before you eat the thick skin. Makes great tea and jam once cleaned.
Thanks William!
Looks like rosehip that we got here in Siberia. Except our rosehip bushes are not as high and bushy.
3:04 these are indeed rosehips! I personally havent eaten them raw but they make an excellent syrup but beware of the seeds as they irritate your skin
Thanks!!
That was a huge short bone. Got rhinos? Fun trek. Thanks.
Yup, those are rose hips; I've made pancake syrup from them, they're delicious!
Yes, they're rosehip. Last year, I made rosehip syrup. High in Vit C.
Thanks!! Appreciate the info!
Those are rosehips, I was always told not to eat them until after a frost, it makes them soft and sweet
Rosehips they are.
And the birdbone would've made a beautiful little flute-like whistle.
Oh well, next time...
It looks like you took a bite out of that petrified wood! How did it taste?
Crunchy!
The mines around where I live have made fossil hunting crazy. You will find shells and coral and be digging about a couple feet away and find ferns and plants.
That sounds amazing!
@@MamlamboFossils It can be but they are posting no trespassing everywhere around here. And you can't contact the owners of the properties because they don't even live around here they live out of state. So it gets hard finding places to go in my area.
If you need to confirm the cave birds , you need to check if they carry tiny clubs and say “UG” instead of “chirp”.
Thanks for the adventure! It’s always fun exploring a new place.
Those don’t look like any rose hips I’ve seen. All the roses I’ve seen have distinctly jagged leaves, and the hops don’t look so smooth and glossy. But that’s just my limited experience. New Zealand is like a different world.
So…with something like that first piece of petrified wood you found, do you cut and/or polish it, or just leave it as-is?
I'll try and polish one side I think
They are, it’s a dog rose. Rosa canina.
@@riverAmazonNZ ok, thank you for the info.
Looks like he took a bite of that rock
It does look like that 😆
The big bone might be cow Humerus
that plant lppked like multi-flora rose ,but im in the states, i dont know yer area
multiflora is an invasive here and if it has hips ,...id be surprised
mike
Looks exactly like rosehip to me! But! It's a good thing you were careful because rosehip seeds are covered by tiny little hairs that can make you super itchy - looks like an allergic reaction but is actually from the tiny hairs acting like microscopic needles - so it is recommended you handle them with care
I didn't know that!!! Thanks for telling me!
I highly doubt that was a burrowing owl burrow. They live in North and South America, and they dont even dig their own burrows. They reuse burrows from other animals. However, if there were bird droppings outside the hole, i dont doubt a bird lives there, not sure on the species, though. Great video as always. It was fun seeing a bit of New Zealand.
In NZ, Kingfishers nest in burrows on bank sides and other vertical surfaces that are soft enough to dig.
that was fun !
I’m not sure how I missed this video in my feed. Those are rose hips! You have to be very careful to eat the fruit and not the seeds on the insides. Very nasty stings!
Thanks so much for that info!
I don’t mind going on the hunt even when you don’t find amazing fossils. I am wondering what magically drying things you wear on your feet that you don’t mind walking in the water mid hike?!?
So you gray fossil was a wasp nest?? You didn't say it was the gray thing was or wasn't what you were talking about
Yeah, the grey thing was a wasp nest
@@MamlamboFossils Thanks
Those look like rose hips to me, unless there are some NZ variants from ours in Europe. We only eat them around november though, cause then they get ripe.
yes they are rosehips
Thanks Dean!
Not much in the way of finds but looked like a beautiful day for an outing, better luck next time
Sometimes you have to explore and just see what you find!
yes, definitely rose hips
Have you ever found a full petrified tree log?
Not a full one, but a large cross section
@@MamlamboFossils I would love it if you could up load a video just showing some stuff you've found besides the fossil crabs and such, I love that content I'm just very intrigued what else you've found because i live in nz too 😂
Do you have alligators
Good thing you didn't try taking out that "fossil" on the wall
It wouldn't have been fun!!
LOVE ur office 🦘🦘🐨🐨
Please tell us what that thick bone was from when you know :)
Its a cow humerus from what I can see, it could be horse but cow is more likely
As Lilith-Rose said, it's probably from a cow
Oh I know this riverbed i drive past it on road trips
7:54 it looks like a metacarpal of a cow.
Those are in fact rose hips
Those look like rose hips they're loaded in vitamin C
5:43 - 5:45 bottom left of the frame
Gonna guess it's sheep. In Sheep Country. In an island nation where the sheep outnumber the people
that is a rosehip
I think I'd rather watch paint dry.
Lol okay guy
hi i like your videos 😊
Here you go and they do look like them. It has pictures of the fruit that look just like the ones you showed
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_hip
If you read this its a Rose hip
