Yoginis | Who they are and why to be cautious

  • Namaste! I'm Dr. Robert, and today I'm exploring the fascinating and powerful world of yoginis.
    While the term "yogini" is often used to describe a female yoga practitioner, the true yoginis are a unique class of deities worshipped extensively between 700 AD and 1200 AD. These deities are closely associated with the Shakti tradition and are often depicted in circular, open-to-the-sky temples.
    The yoginis, typically numbering 64, represent the full range of Shakti in the universe. Each yogini temple features different sets of these goddesses, with the best-preserved temple located at Hirapur, India. However, yoginis are not to be approached lightly; they are powerful, liminal beings who require great reverence and caution in worship.
    For more on this intriguing topic, I recommend the books "Yogini Cult and Temples" by Vidya Dehejia and "Kiss of the Yogini" by David Gordon White.

    Talk about synchronity Dr. Robert. I am on a train enroute Bombay, I was just standing at the door, watching the scenery and various stations go by. I crossed a station named Hirapur. Nice name I thought (It means means the town of diamonds as Heera=diamonds). The train didn't stop at the station though, it moved on. I pulled out my phone and scrolled through my UA-cam feed. I click upon your video. And lo and behold I find your video upon the Yogini sect and their famous temple in Hirapur.
    Bhagwan truly works in mysterious ways!! Om Nama Shivaya ! ❤🙏

      I once saw a monastery in a movie location. 3 years later I was at that location unbeknown to me.
      A year later it popped up on TV and I realized I had gone there maybe because the movie location was so powerful I was led to it by a higher mind. All before UA-cam or Internet

    Thank you. Do you consider the 64 yoginis/dakinis to be metaphorical depictions of DNA? I've been wondering how they relate to the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, which are speculated to relate to 64 combinations of codon in human DNA. But, haven't found any info on this with regard to yoginis/dakinis.

  • @keenanarthur8381

    I don't see the benevolent/non-benevolent (here meaning wrathful?) distinction as indicative of some intrinsic morality. Wrathful Great Goddesses like Kālī or Bhairavī or Chinnamastā are only benevolent under very specific circumstances and could be viewed as amoral when applying subjective human moral concepts onto a primordial death-power that cyclically destroys entire universes. If a benevolent goddess like Lakṣmī blesses a brutal tyrant with abundant resources, that also seems morally questionable. What's good for the wolf is bad for the deer and vice versa, but the two species rely on each other to evolve when their populations are relatively balanced.
    I find that many entities that humans interpret as evil or chaotic or amoral have their own moral values that work for them given the nature of who and what they are, but which are culturally very different from what modern humans typically think of as morality and which may be scary and/or dangerous to the underinformed.

    • @extemporaneous4545
      @extemporaneous4545 Місяць тому +10

      Regarding Goddess Lakshmi blessing tyrants -- neither she nor any other god can refuse. It is the dharma (nature) of gods to bless those who perform the rituals correctly and ask them with a sincere heart. They cannot choose to do otherwise. I would think that the laws of karma come into play for the tyrant in the "Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it" category. In that the very wealth that he is blessed with becomes his curse in some way, maybe because he has to lie awake at night stressing about it, or his own son might steal it away from him etc.

      In Hinduism, there is no concept like good or evil like the Abrahamic religions. You can kill someone in spite or in order to protect a loved one. It depends on what your Dharma is and the Karmic repercussions leading to it. Devatas granting boon to even the Asuras is also part of the Leela (Divine Play), especially by the Trimurti's (although I haven't heard of Vishnu granting boons to Asuras). It's mostly Brahma and Shiva who grant the boons provided the right procedure has been followed. The Bhava and Guna of each Deity is also different. Tamasic deities if worshipped, one must exercise extreme caution. Rajasic you can slack a little bit while Saatvik you can be carefree and it wouldn't matter.
