      Well some of the new ibis systems are better than this, because no matter what he said in the video that its not DIS. It is DIS because it crops in the video. Such units like OIS and IBIS are all analog based which helps to maintain your full sensor size. But if they incorporate both it will just help more. Cause as his video showed in the software it cropped in very heavily, because of it being a DSLR making it where it can’t compensate for the heavy movement like IBIS would have. So I really do think they need to incorporate it, but both together is the best of both worlds.

      It has to. Thats the only way this tech can work no matter who's technology is doing it. It's basically post stabilization (track motion in AE) but you're recording the camera movement rather than having your computer try to figure it out after the fact. So theoretically it would be faster than post stabilization and it is with Catalyst browse. I have never used this device so I don't know how fast it is.

    Have to respectfully disagree with one point. If you’re shooting with a degree of care FCPX stabilization is incredible ( as is PP and other plug in ) digital / post stabilization work flows. The amount of footage I’ve saved / used by running post stabilization on and had incredible results is countless. You can just slap it on and export, like you said - dial it down. If you’re getting shots especially for a film or paid work and post stabilization doesn’t give you butter smooth footage IMHO you need to go back to basics and get your filming / camera operation back in check ;) 🙏

    To touch on Catalyst Browse and Sony's gyro system. Not unlike the Multi-Interface Shoe, this feature is something that all modern cameras should have. This is why companies like Tascam are currently working on a 3rd party solution for the MIS for Fuji and Canon. In regards to Catalyst Browse, it's a robust and easy-to-use system. Not just for Stabilization but for technical information about your videos, for browsing your videos, even color correcting. And yes very very good stabilization. You need to use a high shutterspeed, because of physics which is unfortunate.
    It seems that in order to gain some features modern Sony's are putting out it's opened a gap in the market for 3rd parties to fill the functions for other camera makers.
    In other words, if you shoot or will shoot Sony and wanted XLR audio paired with your video you'd get the MIS already, if you wanted very good stabilization you'd already get the Gryo and Catalyst Browse.

  • @JayJanePhotography

    • @enxunw1282

      Exactly, this is just software stabilization that every phone / gopro uses. It definitely has nothing to do with motion blurs and perspective distortions.

  • @AustralianImage
    @AustralianImage 3 роки тому

    For those who are familiar with the insta360 range of cameras (I have the One R 1 Inch Edition), the FlowState stabilisation is akin to magic. If using nothing more than a selfie stick, not only does it look like you were filming on a dolly, it even removes horizon tilt. Granted, this is calibrated to the built-in lens modules, but there's nothing required than to turn on the camera and start filming. Even shooting at 24fps, the results are unbelievable. The software is also easy to use, though slow. So if this could be included in every camera, gimbals could well become a thing of the past. And also thanks for an honest review/feedback on this product.

  • @patrickmalec8419
    @patrickmalec8419 3 роки тому +2

    This technology is super cool, but very cumbersome right now. I think that in a couple years we'll see cameras come with this pre-installed, which will be much easier from an operators standpoint. The thought of OIS, IBIS, and this working together in harmony in all the major camera brands will be truly revolutionary. Especially if you have all this working with traditional or electronic gimbals

    • @pixxelpusher

      Some of the new Sony cameras are already including it. Gyros in the camera record the movements as metadata that gets stabilized in their desktop "Catalyst" software.

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade
      @SmallSpoonBrigade 3 роки тому

      This is old technology. The only difference is that it's not baked into the camera and better quality. I remember seeing camcorders decades ago that did this. They'd crop the sensor data to keep the center centered making it appear like the footage was being stabilized. Which I guess it kind of was.

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade
      @SmallSpoonBrigade 3 роки тому

      @@pixxelpusher Sony has had the technology to do this in commercially available camcorders for decades. This is just an improvement on preexisting tech.

    • @pixxelpusher
      @pixxelpusher 2 роки тому +1

      @@SmallSpoonBrigade I'm unaware of any consumer camera that's had 3-axis gyro in them apart from the newest line of Sony's (apart from 360 cameras that can do something similar as they capture the full 360 space and can essentially re-warp the view back to level for every frame using flowstate stabilisation which is amazing). Are you referring to sensor shifting? because even though similar in theory that's a bit different and very basic compared to what's going on here. 3-axis gyro will capture movement in full 3D space X, Y and Z and iron out movements in all those directions, which is why the results in Catalyst are so good, especially the bobbing movements in walking. Traditional methods can't do that even with lens and in-body stabilization turned on. Even better would be taking 6-Dof technology and Asynchronous Spacewarp from VR and putting it in cameras to completely smooth out and fix any jittery movements. There isn't any reason camera shake should exist in a modern day camera, footage should look like the camera is smoothly floating in the air.

I'm thinking this may become standard at some point, like it is with the Sony. Nevertheless, each type of stabilization yields a different effect: IBIS, lens, gimbal, post, and Steadicam all yield different styles of footage. As a side note, I'm surprised more L-lenses don't come with IS, given the price tags on them.

    That crop though, losing a lot of the frame in order to get stable footage. Why not just use a gymbal? aren't there any gymbals that are designed around holding the camera a certain way (like from the top as you were doing for the skiing and such)? If so, then I don't see the point of using this attachment that brings such a hassle of calibrating and shaking it before each recording under specific conditions etc when you could just use a gymbal and keep the whole frame the sensor's giving you.

So that's going to eat into your resolution and processing time quite a bit. Now it does seem to do vertical stabilization... so that's neat. That could make it beneficial to add to a gimbal :P

    But you will definitely lose your ability to record audio internally direct to your video file.
    Also it’s quite complicated and needs a lot of time to sync your data and export it via the software.

    can you compare Reelsteady with SeadXp?
    I know there are two versions of Reelsteady, the one for $99 and the other one which is around at $400.
    But since it does such a good job with gopro footage, it must be as good with other cams I guess.

    How does this compare with Sony catalyst which I think is basically the same thing but using the gyro sensors built into the camera.
    Edit: nevermind. I just got to that point in the video 🙈
    I hope you could get your hands on a Sony and test it side by side.

    If you now what you're doing stabilization software works just as well - which means not that well. For example jerky motion will create motion blur unless you are using a weirdly short exposure time. Really not a great solution.

    This is what Insta360 actually does with their weird video container: it just writes metadata from sensors and stabilizes picture in it’s own software afterwards. And this frustrates a lot of users who want very powerful cam that can compute picture instantly but…
    But this technique is very suitable for DSLRs because of weight since gimbal is very heavy. And you already ready to spend more time on that video then average action cam user

    It looks complicated and time consuming. However, the results look very, very good. Hmmm ? This is a lot of cash to put out for this small, plastic, boxed, hardware accelerometer. Also, which version of the GoPro batteries are we talking about that it needs to function ? I think there are 3 versions of the GoPro batteries to date ?

    This cannot solve the motion blur caused by handheld shakiness (I'd assume), also it's cropping in the footage. Very niche tech, but I guess it's at a very weird spot where most professionals wouldn't use it?
