thanks a million for this! just spent a little while this evening learning it, and i've got it down ok! I really appreciate how organized you were in explaining, without making the video too long. My dad will love this
Pellucid tutorial backed by manifest passion to share your gifts. Great song, great teacher. You've not only led us to water; you've filled our glasses generously. Thank you very much!
I’m really trying to learn this for my Dads birthday (5 months) and I’m not the best pianist but he really thinks I am. I hope I’ll be able to perfect it by then and make him happy. Thx so much for your help! Edit: I just want to say thank u sooo much for the helping me I’ve finally finished it and even added a little something to it and I just can’t thank u enough
Never played the piano before . We have one as my wife plays. Heard nightswimming on a random play list and it took me back. For some reason I looked up this up and have just completed the intro . Brilliant. Thanks for this video .
Me too :) I think REM were a great band who really came into their own in their Out of Time and Automatic for the People era. Nightswimming is a classic for me! Glad you enjoyed the tutorial.
That was awesome. Thanks, im only starting, but this is a fun one to mix in to my other learning patterns. Thank you for taking the time to do this. From to UK in the middle of the the second wave of lockdown in the pretendemic.
Glad it's helped and I hope your dad likes it! The whole Automatic For The People album is superb in my opinion. I've been toying with the idea of doing an arrangement of Everybody Hurts... might give that a go sometime soon.
dude I was loving you. Saying the keys one key at a time and then bam you went intermediate on me and stopped on the chorus. You didn’t need to show off. It was supposed to be a tutorial.
Hi, thanks for the tutorial. Your explanations are clear but the second section would be much easier if you showed the notes above your keyboard. It takes several playbacks to work out where the right hand melody plays with the left hand octaves. Apart from that thanks for your patient lesson.
Thanks for the feedback. I've seen others who add notes above the keys. I'll definitely be looking into the effort (video post production time) of doing this for future tutorials. It's useful to know that you think it would be of value.
This is a great tutorial. I've tried to hammer out this rif myself over the years, and there are a few things I just couldn't get, for example, that f# in the middle of the rif. I've never even thought to look up a tutorial online. Isn't youtube great? Thanks again from Canada
Hi I love your tutorial and it is the best I have seen yet of this wonderful song, but I would wish there also was a sheet paper because it can be difficult to see the right hand sometimes and it would be easier to combine the to hands if there was a score to look at too. And again great video 👍
Hi Dan and thanks very much for this excellent tutorial. Just one question, if I may… is your transcription the way Mike Mills actually plays it or, as I suspect, does he make less use of octaves, especially in the LH?
Fascinating question, Michael! My approach to the piece (and my other walkthrough tutorials on my channel) is to disassemble everything by ear, get it all written down and learnt, then teach it. With Nightswimming - the studio recording - I hear octaves, so that's what I wrote down. You made me curious, though, so I took a quick look for a live version here on UA-cam. I found a 'Later with Jools Holland' live session and gave it a watch/listen. Every time the camera pans round to what Mike's doing on the piano, he's definitely playing octaves there in his left hand. So I'm happy my ears were working ok when I made my tutorial!
@@EscapeTheBoxPiano Thanks so much for your comprehensive and extremely helpful reply, Dan. I’ve also watched the Jools Holland REM performance and completely agree with you. Thanks again for your great UA-cam resource!
Yep - it’s quite the challenge, especially at speed. Put in the hours of practice, though and it’ll pay off. Do lots of work hands separately so you can focus 100% on things individually.
First, thanks for your kind words! Second: I didn’t originally do a MIDI when I made this tutorial (it was in the early days of my channel) but, honestly, I could get this done in the next 24 hrs. Drop me a Facebook or Twitter DM if you’re genuinely interested.
I tried so hard but kept messing up because my hands are too small 😂 I even put it on 0.25 speed but he sounded like a drunk old man and I burst out laughing
Great to hear you've started playing piano. If you like the song then it's never a waste of time. But there's some challenges in this for sure... the left hand moves around quite a lot; there are octave stretches which might be quite challenging at this stage where you still need to develop suppleness and flexibility in the tendons in your hands. Might be worth you spending some time doing some exercises - check out one of the earlier videos on my channel which runs through some exercises you might find useful. If you're committed and you put in the hours of practise, it WILL pay off and you'll get where you want to be.
I was wondering the same! I've played as a child but lost all of it. So, I'm back as an adult, trying at it again. This is one of my favourite and most beautiful pieces. I just get lost after the first section here. I hope to get there in a few months or so. Cheers!
The tutorial should start by showing the song played correctly, so I could know if it's worth watching the whole video. There's too many crap tutorials over there. Thank you
Finally someone who can play this great piece of music properly.
Very kind of you to say so! Hope you're enjoying and getting some use from my tutorial :)
I just started piano after playing guitar all my life. First video i searched. Love it. Thankyou
Good luck with it 🙂

Thumbs way up! I've been playing this wrong, but couldn't figure out what changes I needed to make.
Glad my tutorial could help you :)

great job man
Okay, you lost me after the fist section. Oh well.. my nephew played it perfectly after one run through. It's me, not you. lol. Love this song.

@@EscapeTheBoxPiano finding them octave stretches hard though! Keep accidentally pressing other keys

Is there midi available to purchase for this? This is the most accurate rendition I’ve heard !

Would I need an 88 key piano/keyboard to replicate?
bravo!
Hmmm...that's satisfying.

Is this insanely difficult for someone who's only been playing piano for about a week? Am I wasting my time with it?
Great to hear you've started playing piano. If you like the song then it's never a waste of time.
