One you might add is a recommendation from Dixie for those unsure if thru-hiking was going to work for them. She recommended that you go out for at least three weeks and see how you do and feel about that relatively lengthy time on trail. She observed that in that time you’ll experience all of the facets of thru-hiking such as zeroing and resupplying. I suspect most people would also get a taste of the mental challenge of hiking every day in all kinds of weather conditions. Nice summary of many of the considerations though. Enjoyed it. Merry Christmas!
I think that's a great idea! I would agree that 3 weeks is about the mark where you might start to see if thru-hiking is for you or not - I do wish it was easier for more people to get that much time off though! Merry Christmas!
Love how you exude both positivity and reality at the same time! The idea of thru-hiking the PCT sounds so amazing, but I’m starting small with a series of 40-50 mile backpacking trips to build mental, physical and experiential skills. It’s a journey.
One change I made from doing 2-3 day backpack trips was to go much lighter in what I carried. For me it was key to completing a through hike. I only did the Colorado Trail, but at 480 miles it was long enough to convince myself that going light (~15 lbs) was critical.
Nice. I only did a short thru hike (Colorado Trail). I can see after doing that how doing the CDT would be a much bigger mental challenge. I actually did the CT NB as I didn't know if I would complete it, and wanted to cover the parts of the CT I thought would be the most interesting. Since I had lived in Colorado I had seen quite a bit of the north east section of the trail and thus I did it NB. I did most of it on my own, but did travel a portion of it with a friend I made along the way. I recently did the Three Passes Trek in Nepal. Unlike the CT I did it with a couple of friends and am glad that I did. I actually found it tougher physically than the CT even though the distances were shorter and we weren't carrying as much. I definitely agree with all the points you made about hiking a trail with or without a partner.
Congrats on the CT and Three Passes! I agree that the southern part of the CT is probably the most exciting! although it's all pretty great. I can imagine the altitude for Three Passes would be even more intense than on the CT!
Love BPR. The times you were a co-host, you were always so knowledgeable and informative. These videos are no different. That's why I subscribed. So, thank you. I appreciate you and the hard work you put in to make such good videos.
Are you planning to hike the AT southbound? If not you’ll likely have to do a flip flop with a June start date. Also, the heat in the south and mid-Atlantic states will be a factor. Good luck.
@@eliseott thank youuu!! I listened to your episode of ’Trail tails’ and been dead set on CDT ever since 😅 Im coming from Finland so I hope everything works out with visas and stuff. Ill tag you once im on trail!

Thank you!! I think that's an excellent idea! I bet the 40-50 mile trips will be a blast as well.
