Funny...now try imagining setting up your guitar right with your particular amplifier and getting a terrific sound outta that alone...! Really...it definitely ⚡CAN⚡be done. Pedals really are great, but there's no need if one has the right gear for the particular job and knows what they're doing.
That Mesa Boogie amp has built in mega gain. But if you played through a vintage super reverb for example with a strat you would definitely need an overdrive pedal to get that much gain. Nothing wrong with pedals (many of the greats used them (Jeff Beck, Jimi, Stevie Ray etc…). Nothing wrong with no pedals.
Back in the 90's I used to use pedals, but only maybe 3 at the most. Then we moved to Portland, Oregon. I went to blues jams all over the place, there 22 of them every week. Most of them were horrible, then I found Duff's Garage. The hosts were recording artists and had the best best tones I ever heard. But NO PEDALS???? All of them were using vintage Fender amplifiers. One night at the jam I got called back up, but I was terrified because I had put my pedals away. I was using the new Blues Junior amp I'd just bought, and plugged in scared to death to play without my "talent boxes." I sounded better than I'd ever had! I realized that pedals take AWAY things, they don't add anything. Not that long later I was in a music store looking at amps, and the kid sales guy was telling me how great his Vox modeling amp was EVERY AMP IN ONE BOX. Except that it literally blew up as I was playing it and died completely. I got a huge laugh at that. So, I said "look do you have any TUBE amplifiers in here somewhere? He said "oh yeah we have this stupid old Deluxe Reverb in the corner gathering dust." It was like he'd told me his mother was a street walker or something, LOL. I had a hard time restraining my glee! I paid $450 for with a blown speaker and they install a horrible new Jensen speaker and I walked out on the clouds. Later I put a Weber speaker in it, and it gave me tones from Heaven. That amp has been with me now for almost 20 years and has gained in value up close to $3000, and is 50 years old now. I put a negative feedback switch on the back to give it a tiny bit more gain, and everyone who played through commented on what great tone it had. Moral of the story, BUY A GREAT TUBE AMP. Nix the pedals addiction. I have boxes of vintage pedals and never use them, once in awhile I'll play them and put them back in boxes, because the best tones are without them.
Well it depends on what genre you wanna play. Like octave pedals or crazy combinations with delays and shimmer reverb. Pedals are not what make the guitarist but a good guitarist can use different sounds in his favour. Guitar can be many things. But i get that hes a blues guitarist so of course why should he use pedals and i agree with him about the amp.
The only pedal I use is a Radial Tone Bone through my Mesa Rectoverb 50,most of the time I play clean and get compliments from people,I agree with him, give it a try folks and see if you like it.
No, no. Using one pedal is using pedals. Acting superior about using less or no pedals is ignorant. It means someone doesn’t know how amps and pedals work, how to use them correctly, they’re in the dark about their signal chain. Artists claiming superiority for using only one brush instead of two or twenty are showing their weakness.
Yes, it sounds good. But that is FOOKIN' loud. A decent tube screamer could get you that tone without having the neighbours bash on your door every time you pick up the guitar
Sure crank the amp sounds great. Some delay is nice. Imagine Pink Floyd with no delay… This guy has a lot of attitude must be lots of fun to work with…
But then I have to focus on improving my music theory and technique. It's a lot easier to sit on UA-cam and research the next greatest pedal to use as a crutch for my mediocre playing.
So this one dimensional player (second only to Joe B) is telling me I don’t need pedals because a good amp will give me, what, clean and dirty options? Wow! I had no idea that EVERY tonal possibility could be achieved so easily 😐 His “theory” is dismissive and uppity, his “tone is in the hands” moment was sloppy yet pretentious and pedantic. I guess I’m off to buy a good amp then 🙄. What a fud.
Lol this guy is so terrible and somehow has 30 albums and considered in 5 top blues man of all times, but nowhere near your skills or talent of course, poor Walter only has 50 years of playing live behind his belt, but definitely has a potential don’t you think master ?
@@sixslinger9951 That's the classic blues rock guitar to amp sound. People so used to digital and plugins nowadays. That's the real deal tone in your fingers sound. Clapton, SRV, Page etc..
You don’t put a kick ass amp through a $100 pedal, you put the pedal through a kick ass amp. You don’t use pedals to make your amp sound better either. You use them to add effects that amps don’t come with, and shouldn’t come with (unless they’re modeling amps; yuck!!). Amps are for power and foundational, fundamental tone. That’s a big ask in itself. Asking an amp to do more than that is asking for a bad amp. You don’t NEED affects. But there’s not a damn thing wrong with wanting them. Trying to act superior because you don’t use pedals is ignorant and pointless.

Walter tells the truth.
I first saw the Walter Trout blues band back in 1994 in Portsmouth. Fantastic to see live!
I just got back tonight [11/11/23] from seeing him for the first time. He was great.

To have some tremolo during a swampy song? Or delay for slide? A wah-wah for latin rhythms? But ol Walter is bad ass....

Walter is badass !!
Saids you don’t need pedals then proceeds to play the most basic generic blues licks through a amp that sounds like a cheap distorted pedal.
Some open mic type shit. Lol
Sounds good to me Walter, no pedals for me either.
I never bought any.. oeople like it

You can dial it in but a tube screamer is never going to sound quite like that
Use earphones 🎧
A pedal will never emulate an overdriven amp.
depends on what you wanna do. theres also recording purposes. but i agree that less pedals=better
Pedals are just added color. We dont judge artists for using color.
All skill
The same thing that I do for example with my SG ,Marshall amp and OX ,don’t need pedals .
If that works for him, then cool. Jimi Hendrix, SRV and many others use pedals. Do whatever gets the job done for each individual
