Cannondale Cujo 24+ Kids Mountain Bike Review + Initial Upgrades

  • In this video I discuss the reasons why I chose the Cannondale Cujo kids mountain bike with 24 inch plus wheels. Basically it has all real mountain bike parts that you would find on any good mountain bike for adults, but it's in kid size.
    I also discuss the first upgrades I made to this bike right off the bat. This includes converting the tires to Tubeless, adding a DIY chainstay protector, installing a water bottle cage and replacing the pedals with Chromag Radar Kids bike pedals
    This should fit Lightning Dragon for 3 seasons, given that I can upgrade it with parts I already have.
    This bike has 24 inch wheels with 2.6 inch wide tires on extra wide rims. This makes for a BIG tire with a soft footprint and TONS of traction.

    Awesome Stuff, I did the same thing with our daughter. Except started her on a wishbone wooden 3-n-1 bike that converts from a push trike to a taller balance bike. But went and bought a Specialized hotwalk balance bike and started her race it at BMX tracks with the rest of the family. Then went to a Big Boy pit bike ( the ones with dolly wheels) and at the same time she was racing a GT mini, but then she crashed!!! So no more racing, but she is on a Specialized Hotrock sidewalk BMX that I have up graded. All this is to say, I like what you have done and like the next bike you picked out for your oldest son. I too am leaning that way for our daughters next bike, except I think I want to change the shifter right of the bat. To a low end Shimano thumb and trigger shifter. Hey great video, keep them coming and remember to Live-Life-Loud!!!

    Got my 7 year old one of these after he trashed his 20" bike at Aviemore over Easter. He absolutely loves it. Lack of suspension is no issue & tbh they're too heavy for him to benefit from anyway. The plus tyres absird some of the impacts & he loves the fact its like a mini version of my Fatbike. Great to see the upgrades you've done, wasn't sure about going tubeless so it's good to see it's doable.

      How tall was your 7 year old? I have a 49 inch kid turning 7 next week. He looks to be just outside recommendations for 24 inch bikes, but he's outgrowing his 16 inch. Can't test ride at a store due to COVID-19, so going to have to just order one.

    Cool vid I just bought my nearly 8yr old boy the same bike here on the UK and he’s been absolutely loving it! I’m upgrading the cassette to a Sunrace 11-40 and a better chain. The orange pedals look awesome 😎

    For my 6yo kid I've got a German 24" Cube Race (made in 2011) whit white/blue/red colors.
    All I can say this bike is REALLY amazing.
    Lightweight, great looking with quality components. I snag it for around 210 usd... (using a conversion from my local currency).

    what is the axle to crown length on the factory fork? a 26" manitou markhor air fork set to 80mm would probably work really well and the markhor can be upgraded to the absolute+ damper if you wanted. There only around $225

    Thank you for the video. I bought my son cannondale kids 24 (2018), but there is a fork , that does not work at all. I plan to install an air fork for 26 wheels, for example manitou markhor. What can you say about this fork? And I also plan to put in front a hydraulic brake from my shimano m315 bike for a confident ride through the forest. Good luck and health to your family. Hello ATF,
    I'm nearly ready to get my almost-8 year old a Salsa Timberjack 24 from our LBS and I'm debating between the suspended or non-suspended models. It's only about $50-60 difference in price between the two. My son doesn't care for the pale blue color of the non-sus model while the sus bike is a nice looking deep red. I like the non-sus for the simplicity. Does Salsa spec a decent suspension unit that makes it worth the difference in price in this case, or would you advise avoiding it altogether and getting the non-sus model?

    • @AllTerrainFamily
      @AllTerrainFamily  4 роки тому

      I don’t know much about that, but if it’s a decent air fork then it’s probably worth it. I really like that Timberjack 24. I have a timberjack myself.

    My kid is turning seven and I was curious how you’d think a cujo 24 would be for him fit-wise. He is a bit over 51” with about a 23 1/4” inseam. Stand over height on these is listed at about 24” so I’m concerned it’s slightly too big while the 20 would be on the small size.
    To be honest, part of me thought about goin the bmx route as he could practically trash it around the neighborhood but I ride (light xc and used to race road) and I kind of want something he can use to go distances with me. Closest pump track is a good 45 min away.
    Thx.

    • @StuttsyDC
      @StuttsyDC 5 років тому +1

      Ok. Interesting. I feel like he's certainly tall enough but was considered his inseam isn't enough based on the stated standover height.

    • @AllTerrainFamily
      @AllTerrainFamily  5 років тому

      Tough with kids. Nothing is ever the right size. My guy started out with the seat slammed and has moved up since then. It’s a good platform since you can get a longer stem, wider bars and setback seatpost.

    Hey All-Terrain Family,
    Any clue why the bottom bracket is so low compared to all the bikes in the same category? I'm considering it for my almost-8-year-old.

    • @AllTerrainFamily
      @AllTerrainFamily  5 років тому

      Lower standover height. It’s working out well for him still. So I think it’s a good bike.

    • @hankalspach1
      @hankalspach1 5 років тому +1

      All-Terrain Family With the addition of a suspension fork, the bb height would be downright normal. The existing rigid fork is not extended to match the height of let's say an 80mm suspension fork.

    • @AllTerrainFamily
      @AllTerrainFamily  5 років тому

      @@hankalspach1 I haven't looked into adding a suspension fork to it. The BB height isn't bad. Hasn't slowed my guy down at all. If you want suspension, look at the Norco bikes. Commencal also has a RAD line of kids MTBs. Also the Salsa Timberjack Sus 24. That has the added benefit of being a How To Train Your Dragon reference.

    • @hankalspach1
      @hankalspach1 5 років тому +1

      @@AllTerrainFamily I wasn't looking to add one at this point either-I was just trying to figure out the design intent. You're probably right-lower standover than the others.

      That actually looks pretty good. I like the Sram trigger shift. Other than that and the suspension fork it’s pretty comparable. The Cannondale will be lighter. I wanted him to ride rigid for now to develop skills and because I don’t think the sus forks for this price Range are any good. You probably can’t go wrong with either. DB is a great brand too.

    • @AllTerrainFamily
      @AllTerrainFamily  5 років тому

      @@dominionn09 You're welcome. The main thing I like about the Cujo is the fact that you can walk into any bike shop and find replacement or upgrade parts. That's probably going to be true of the DB you are looking at as well. However, kids leave bikes out in the dirt and rain and sun and suspension forks don't take kindly to that treatment. A couple of aluminum tubes don't mind at all...
