It was an incredibly dangerous job, but as they say, "Someone's gotta do it!" Hats off to the men who courageously took on roles like this.

My Dad told me the rear gunner was always the first one shot.

19:38 He arches his body in pain and clutches at his chest. "Guaghh!" he thinks right before expiring. "I just got shot with a twin barrel .50 caliber machine gun!"

I remember a documentary in which the gunners stated that their time on the skeet range helped them more than anything else as it drilled into them how to lead a target.

Do not only remember the people that lost their lives that we may live free. Remember also why, else we disrespect their sacrifice.
We truly stand on the shoulders of giants & let us never forget.

@5:27 I think that's Dane Clark as Burgess Meredith's buddy.

Burgess been a good ball turrent gunner if not a little too tall @ 5'5 &1/2". He looked shorter on TV. Damm checked his height he was Capt. In service too.

      Was your Dad one?
My father was, and his name was Charlie. He was based at Mildenhall, late 1943 to wars end.

@@Saxondog No... He wanted to be an AG, but think he failed his qualification to become aircrew. He spent most of the war as an AC2 and LAC at Abingdon. His final months were at North Creake and Watton.

@@LouisL1963 Hopefully your Dad never saw some of the horrors of war which my father did. Like many of the personnel in all three of the services in all countries, he never spoke often of such things.

@@Saxondog Think he did a couple of times - one being doing guard duty on some of the gliders that didn't make it to Arnhem 😪 Was your dad RAF or USAAF?

Ronald Reagan gets second billing to Burgess Meredith. That's how it should be.

"Enemy plane coming in from the left?" Whatever became of, "enemy plane coming in from 9 or 10 O'clock high." Send that gunner back to military language school.
