In 1979 I stayed with a Hopi family in Hotevilla, and the grandfather of the family took me to see the Betatakin cliff dwellings. I was especially interested also in the rock art on the right side of the large cave. The one shield-like design by the handprints contains the figure holding a rainbow in each hand. Then the grandfather pointed out the quartered circle that you barely showed around the corner from the shield at 35:15 and to the left of the concentric circles or nested arcs. The grandfather told me the quartered circle is a record of their migration. Three quarters of the circle was painted pinkish and represent the three previous worlds they migrated from that got destroyed. The one quarter that's painted beige represent the fourth world in which we live today. A ranger there told me that sometimes during heavy rainfall a waterfall would cascade over the top of the cliff in front of the large cave, so that the ruins become like a city behind a waterfall. I would give anything to witness that!

Those plants that you said you didn’t like the Native Americans would use those for soap, shampoo, and use the leaves for basket weaving. The pinion pines the would get the pine nuts for food obviously and with the sap boil it down and mix with other herbs plants like the chaparral for putting on cuts and different wounds. It is amazing! If you go into one of the gift shops around there and they have it, buy it! You will never regret it. We can learn so much from them about survival in the desert 🏜 this is one of your best videos Larry! Loved it. ❤️❤️

Captivating video that captures a little known, yet extraordinary archeological wonder. And I found that your delicate expertise with the camera and the hushed wonder in your voice combined to add a reverent, spiritual quality to the explore. I didn't just watch this video; I felt it🙏

So glad you were able to go to this remarkable canyon! Such beautiful red, rust colors, I love it! I always do the same thing, wonder about the people who have lived there hundreds of years ago.💕🏜️

I'm thinking pinon pine nuts or possibly juniper berries is what the grinding bowls were for making pine nut flour.

That natural arch reminded me of something out of Raiders of the Lost Arch like you could push on it and it would open like a secret door

Yuppers! My pleasure. I wish I could really explore the site; roam the dwellings survey the natural rock walls, inspect what I think is a large buffalo at the base of the dwellings. I have many questions that the guide could not answer...anywho, maybe another time.
