He has one of the best violas ever made! Quite jealous ! I think the clarity comes from a combination of his great technique plus the instrument. I know of some very average violas that just wouldn't be able to "speak" so well even with this bowing technique. This is a very nice Pag 5 Mr. Schotten!
Thank you, Liam, I appreciate your comment! True, it is a great viola, but also a large one (17 inches), so it has been challenging to achieve clarity in the low register. Recording this piece was an interesting and rewarding experience....
This is an incredibly helpful tutorial. You play beautifully! I also appreciate the repertoire you included in this program. I look forward to learning some of this music !!
Mr Schotten, I would like to know what chinrest you use? I really like your videos, I have noticed that you have changed your shoulderest for the pirastro, which was the one you used before? thank you!
It took me a long time to research the chinrest. I bought it in Israel a couple of years ago and lost the name of the violin shop where I purchased it. I found out yesterday that you can get it from Alexander Accessories in England. It is hand made and amazingly makes the viola sounds better. Expensive too. The Pirastro shoulder rest also helps with the sound and is very light and comfortable. Before I used the Bon Musica shoulder rest.
Great performance and lecture! Can i ask just one silly question? Whenever i finish any fast passage, my palm (especially under the thumb finger) muscles ache so much. I just wonder if a great violist like you also feel a little pain after playing some fast piece like this paganini? I suspect my pain comes from squeezing neck of viola with thumb and index fingers whenever i try to stretch and press down my weak fourth finger(it is pretty short compare to other fingers) or do some strong vibrato. I though lifting pinky while pressing down other fingers is the proof of lacking of strength, but it seems not(after watching your performance). Just one more silly question. What do you think about holding the viola just with your chin and shoulder? I mean, violin is light and small, so holding it between chin and shoulder is not a big deal, but i'm playing 16.5inch Viola with wide lower body which is quite heavy to hold it. I mean, it's not impossible to hold it between my chin and shoulder, but it definitely gives pain to my left back. However, if i'm trying to support viola by lifting the neck using thumb and index finger joints, it gives some restrictions to my vibrato or shifting flexibility. What do you think about it? Are you holding your viola just with your Chin and shoulder? Or are you also supporting it with your left hand? Sorry for the long question. I was just shocked at your technique and want to hear advice from you.
Hi JIN, This is hard to answer in writing. It is better if I can do a Zoom or FaceTime meeting with you. This way I can watch you play and give you some ideas how to fix your problem. If you are interested let me know your email address and we’ll take it from there.
Dear Luigi, Mr Primrose has never put this arrangement down on paper, so I had to reconstruct it from my lessons with him 56 years ago and his recording. I am in the process of redoing my website.Hopefully it will be finished soon, and once it's done, the music will be available on it.
