The Schmeiser case seem to have been extremely exaggerated and was ruled in favor of Monsanto as there was no evidence of an "accident" and every bit to it being an patent offense on Schmeiser's end. Don't get me wrong, these corps need to be scrutinized on every move. The whole patent-thing on genes is a ridiculously complicated and strange practice but I do value the facts over a snappy and outrage-baiting headline. My biggest issue here is actually that anti-Monsanto has become synonymous to anti-GMO. GMO is just a technology/technique/method. Monsanto is just a profit-driven player in the field of biotech. Not the same thing. Personally I'm pro-GMO. It has the potential to solve a lot of problems in providing a sustainable and considerate food supply to the world and opens the doors to many other biotech problems (e.g. moving away from crude-oil dependence and steering to alternatives in the petrochemical industry). I'm still not sure about Monsanto. Much of the scary stories about them seem to be too exaggerated to warrant the kind of hate it receives. Edit: Small correction. Monsanto apparently isn't even that big. About as large as Starbucks, which are both only a fifth of what Coca Cola is

I would like to hear Nye's opinion on bioethics surrounding GMO and companies' aggressive legal team. There were cases that companies sued farmers because some crops not of their company origin was pollinated with their GMO crop. Also how ethical is it for companies to make crops that can't produce seeds to be use in the next growing season by the farmers.

Farmers still make out better in the long run with more yields and buying new seed every year or they wouldn't do it. Old seed did not disappear.

While I do have ethical concerns regarding GMOs, it is becoming a necessity. GMO crops produce more food than organic. It is an unfortunate fact but we need more food to feed the world's growing population. Until vertical farming, where entire skyscrapers are farms, becomes common, we won't be able to feed everyone on the planet.

There's bound to be a shift in work culture soon anyway! With the rise of AI, the safest jobs are creative ones I think but j may be wrong :)

It's rather that it's so culturally normative and non controversial that people can get away with being hypocrites about what they eat. I would bet my life that Bill thinks factory farming is a troubling industry and that growing meat like we do with quorn is certainly preferable on every level, ethically, environmentally and well, not sure about economically (yet).

Right now I believe synthetic burgers are ~$2000 and as the process is refined it becomes affordable and more so the more it's produced and the benefits of the technology require it to be affordable as soon as possible. Drastically lower emissions from animal farming. Better the diets of hundreds of millions of humans. Stop the annual slaughter and physical and mental manipulation of many many animals.
