Yeah I hope Esmeralda is played by an actress who is Romani (aka Gypsy). Esmeralda is one of the very few Romani characters in popular culture so it would be awesome if someone that looked like her play her in the life action version.

I do not like the idea of another person in notre dame who is friends with Quasimodo because that’s what he strives for in the whole movie, so giving him a friend at the Beginning is a problem

I agree with you as I feel it would undercut his desire to be out there among people. Maybe instead of giving quasimodo a friend in Notre Dame, give Phoebus a friend instead. I saw the La Jolla Playhouse production of the Hunchback in San Diego, CA back in 2014 and in that version they gave Phoebus a friend who was a Lieutenant, so it would not be too far fetched of an idea to do something similar in the live action remake. Although, it could end up being a bit to on the nose to Gaston and Lefou in Beauty and the Beast if Josh Gad were to play the role. But it would make logical sense storytelling wise to give Phoebus a friend instead of Quasimodo. Although I do feel Grace had good intentions with her idea.
Exactly what he needs to be is probably a ghost haunting the halls of Notre Dame and befriending Quasi.
Maybe they could be an acquaintance instead.
Grace, I would personally pick a darker toned skin Esmeralda because that's what she looked like in the animated film. Aladdin is not going the route of a darker toned skin Jasmine, so it would help a lot if Disney used a darker toned skin Esmeralda since they're not doing it for Jasmine.
Disney doesn't want to upset their white audiences.

I feel like her as Esmerelda would not be a good fit. Someome who is of darker skin should be considered. Dont forget the "gypsies" initially thought to be from Egypt are actually from what is now known as Northern India. So someone of South Asian heritage would be a greta pick for the role

Saw the touring show a few months back, and they had Quasimodo played by a deaf actor (just as the character is deaf in Hugo's book). His songs were sung by one of the gargoyles while he signed the words in ASL. One of the most spectacular things I've ever seen.

Also- as a passionate Christian, I would like to say that Hunchback is NOT an anti Christian story. In fact, as a member of the church, I like that the story depicts the moral complexity of the church, and how it can be manipulated by the greed of men.
Furthermore- It is unclear if Quasimodo is a gypsy. In many versions, he is the son of Frollo’s younger brother Jehan. It all depends on what version they choose to pull from. Though Esmeralda is revealed to be of French heritage in the novel, I think she is too widely established as a Romani woman in Disney’s version to not cast an actress of color. I’m personally shooting for an unknown Romani talent. The casting of Ariana Grande would be considered whitewashing by many, and probably something Disney wants to avoid.

I feel like Ariana Grande is way too girlish to play Esmeralda, who is a much more womanly character. There's no way she could carry the depth or sheer presence of the character in the original film. I did like your other choices though.

The whole cast from the broadway version of the hunchback 4 years ago were all pretty much perfect.
Andrew Garfield would be great...but Ariana grande as Esmeralda...I just don’t see it...I think Vanessa Hudgens or Nina Dobrev or Chrissie Fit would be pretty good...because Esmeralda is supposed to be beautiful...but she should also be a street performer

Grace, how familiar are you with the stage show? I’d be surprised if they don’t add stuff from it. Also, though I love your choice of Rami for Quasi, but Michael Arden SLAYED this role in the stage musical. He’s done some TV as well (and won the Tony for Once on this Island as best revival). He will always be my #1 choice.

I respectfully disagree on almost all of these. My picks (assuming this is still going to be a musical) would be:
*Quasimodo:* Ben Platt. No question. He's perfect for the role. He can pull off sensitivity very well and his voice is fabulous.
*Esmeralda:* Either Pippa Soo or Zendaya. They're both good actresses of color who can both sing and would KILL God Help the Outcasts. They could also go with an unknown here.
*Frollo:* Grace's picks here would both work as long as they can sing.
*Phoebus:* Chris Hemsworth or Jake Gyllenhaal (if their Marvel commitments don't conflict). Jonathan Groff is good, but he's not scruffy enough.
*Clopin:* I would actually go with Rami Malek here. It was a smaller role in the original but I think they could expand it for him fairly easily.
Don't give Quasimodo a human friend. That would kind of kill the notion that he's lonely in the bell tower, which is very important. I would keep the gargoyles, just tone down the comedy. And I would cast Imelda Staunton (or Jane Krakowski), Neil Patrick Harris and Josh Gad (yes, I would put him here).

I have to be honest, I love Hunchback of Notre Dame (One of my favourite Disney movies) and agree with your choices, but since I saw on youtube the musical adaptation with Michael Arden and Ciara Renée as Quasimodo and Esmeralda, I think that my bar is too damn high to really enjoy this adaptation!

For Esmeralda, I would have Lea Salonga as my first choice and perhaps Sierra Boggess as an alternative. Lea Salonga has the honor of already playing two Disney princesses, Jasmine and Mulan. Why not make it three? Sierra Boggess has mostly worked in Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals, but she got her start as Ariel in Broadway’s Little Mermaid.
I loved the animated movie! The songs are definitely ahead of their time, my favorites are “Heaven’s Light” and “Hellfire”. Frollo is such an amazing villain.
Priyanka Chopra would be appropriate as Esmerelda. She also sings in many Bollywood films. Gypsies also trace their origins to India.

God Help the Outcasts is such a gorgeous underrated Disney song. As far as Esmerelda..my first thought is that I could see Vanessa Hudgens in the role because she looks the part and can sing of course.

Zatana 1878 I would love for her to play Ariel too, Zendaya is one of my favorite celebrities and I think that she would kill the role. I just don’t want her to have to deal with all of the hate she would get for being a black woman playing a “beloved” white character. She dealt with unnecessary hate for her role as MJ in the new Spider-Man. (Despite her not even playing comic book Mary Jane). Imagine the levels of hate people would throw at her if she was confirmed to be Ariel. Of course her fan will support her no matter what, it’s just she’s human and a person can only take so much. Plus, She is expanding as an actress and taking on more serious roles, she’s even got a new show on HBO coming this year that has really serious tones. Therefore I think she’d be fantastic as Esmeralda or Ariel.

Why would anyone think that Ariana Grande would be good as Esmeralda? For one, Ariana is a short young woman. Esmeralda looked tall and willowy to me. This would be a perfect role for Zendaya!
Imho, Ariel would be the perfect role for Ariana, because Ariana can pull off that sweet and ditzy and innocent “who me?” character and pull it off flawlessly. In the same breath, I can see Zendaya flawlessly pulling off the smart, sassy, and exotically beautiful character that Esmeralda had.

I will say the more I think about casting the more people I have that will be great for Quasi and less people for Esme. I am against Ariana as the role, honestly she is a pretty decent comedic actress from her Victorious days not so much dramatic. Love that you picked Groff and Boyle. I think Brandon Uranowitz would be good as choppin and Norm Lewsis as Frollo. Also for Quasi I think Ross Lynch would be interesting or Austin Mckenzie, a break out role for him.
I also hope that the new songs added would be from the excellent stage production, great material for all the characters

In the novel, Quasimodo was son of gypsies. They kidnap a French baby girl and puts Quasimodo in her place. That French baby girl, raised by gypsies, turned out to be Esmeralda.
I think that would be a nice plot twist if they use it in the movie.
I think Disney would have a publicity nightmare if they didn't cast a handi-capable person as Quasimodo! Some stage productions have already done so. Also, I always viewed Frollo in the live action as Benedict Cumberbatch or Hugh Jackman (he did a great job in Victor Hugo's other musical, Les Mis). And Gad can actually play Jehan, Frollo's younger brother, and maybe change him from a spoiled womanizer to a sympathetic cleric.
As a true fan of the French novel, I'd like to see Frollo's equally religious and dark counterpart, Sister Gudule (spoiler: she doesn't know Esmeralda is her lost daughter until a plot twist in the end! Second spoiler: baby Esmeralda was kidnapped by gypsies and replaced with Quasimodo!)

Changing Jehan will probably be easy because he doesn't normally make it into film adaptations. But I don't like Quasimodo having friends, I feel like it takes away from his need to interact with the world. I think Gad wants to play Clopin. If they bring in Sister Gudule, I want Judi Dench to play her. She's been talking about wanting to play a villain and she can sing

Everything makes sense about this classic.. it all comes together at the end of the movie..
Um, why is no one talking about Michael Arden? he played a perfect Quasimodo in the musical. His transitions from talking to singing voice are very natural and heartfelt :(
I’m betting that Josh Gad is trying to get Kenneth Branagh to direct this remake. They both worked on Murder on the Orient Express, and Branagh is no stranger to dark literary classics and Disney live-action adaptations (Cinderella). Depends if he’s focused on Death on the Nile after Artemis Fowl will probably flop.
Blergh. Branagh "modernization" and "add up some pointless action" in Murder on the Orient Express are, by far, the worst problems in that movie.
He would definitely try to make Quasimodo sexier and speak about the wage gap while explosions.
Nobody should play Esmeralda except Rihanna ! Rihanna would be perfect for play Esmeralda and she has exactly the look for play this role .
Anyone else think Zazie Beetz would be a great Esmeralda?

I think Leslie Odom Jr. would make a GREAT Frollo! He won a Tony Award for playing Aaron Burr in "Hamilton" and joined Josh Gad for "Murder on the Orient Express", so he has the connections. He is SO AMAZING at playing conflicted characters that you hate on the surface, but when they start singing, you can not resist him!

Seeing The Hunchback of Norte Dame in theaters back in 1996 was one of my favorite movie going experiences.

Rami Malek should DEFINITELY be in the movie! He definitely has the background to play Quasimodo. I can already imagine his chemistry with Ariana Grande.

I don’t know if a lot of people have heard of the off-broadway show “hunchback of Notre Dame” but it’s seriously amazing ! Alan menken himself wrote new songs for it ( Phoebus actually sings in it too) and I think it would make the movie even better!
