My maiden name is Holtsclaw, I was amazed to find out this information several years ago when I first started my family tree! I grew up thinking I had a strange name, I really wish I had known my ancestors stories so I could tell people about my family name when they called me Coleslaw😆 I am so grateful to know about my Holtsclaw branch!
All of the immigrants of the Germanna colony were cousins from Baden, Prussia. BC Holtzclaw wrote several books about these cousins that immigrated from Prussia. The first group had to wait in London until Queen Anne approved to open up the mining to Virginia, which is why it was named, Germmana, dedicated to Queen Anne and their homeland.
Very informative - thank you!
