People purchased a luminary which was labeled with a veteran’s name and branch of service, as seen in this video.

    It's been said before, but it is called a pontil, not a pommel. It was caused by the punty rod that was attached to the bottle so the lip could be tooled on. Also, personalized bottles were considered a status symbol, not just an identifier of the owner of the bottle.

    I know this is late but I've just run across this video. I'd wish it had said more about the Hitts as slaveholders. I am a descendant through Peter's son Harman, then his daughter Dinah Lawler, etc. I understand they held substantial numbers of enslaved people and think that's an important part of the story. Thank you.

      So what if they owned slaves, what’s it to you? Why is it important? It’s apparent now that bringing Africans here at all was a huge mistake. What ever trifling bit of labor they provided certainly wasn’t worth the problems they cause today.

    The story of Spotswood deserves more time in order to provide a broader overview of his dubious plans for Germanna. The mining scheme was, in fact, less heroic and benign as many believe. Spotswood's scheme was poorly considered from the start and quickly failed. It was hatched after the overlords in London said (in other words) "make this place self sufficient, or else". Ultimately, his interests were mercantile and self-serving--fairly summarised as a combination of greed and vanity, I believe. Locating the (often desperate) German settlers in the region was part of a considered strategy to use their presence as human shields against suspicious and increasingly hostile indigenous nations nearby and an increasing French presence west and northwards.

    All of the immigrants of the Germanna colony were cousins from Baden, Prussia. BC Holtzclaw wrote several books about these cousins that immigrated from Prussia. The first group had to wait in London until Queen Anne approved to open up the mining to Virginia, which is why it was named, Germmana, dedicated to Queen Anne and their homeland.

    I'm a descendant of the Holtzclaw family. My mother's side of the family still goes by the Holtzclaw name. Been searching for years for any information about my family history and no one could tell me anything past my great grandfather and that it was (obviously) a German name. From what I know, and what I've read, it seems most of our family ended up in the Kentucky, Tennesse, Illinois, and Missouri areas.

    This is a very informative video. Thank you so much for performing the research and presenting it. A couple of questions: (1) I presume some cores were removed from the logs in the dendrochronology process. Did the Germanna foundation retain and preserve those cores? These might be useful if there are future refinements to the technology, or if something happens to the house. (2) Can you provide any information about Russell and Joan Hitt, the donors? Is this the same as Chairman Russell Hitt (1935-2020) of Hitt Consulting of Arlington? Thanks again!

    • @HistoricGermanna
      @HistoricGermanna 3 роки тому

      Hello, thanks for the question. According to Dennis, that area is called the "punt." Because of the glass "Rod' being the part which had to be broken off after the bottle was formed, it was a rough break and pushing it in, would make the bottle sit down flat and less wobbly. Thanks for watching!
