- Dianne and Guillermo Rastelli retired at the ages 45 and 48 with $2.2 million and a plan to travel in search of their forever home. The Rastellis are members of the FIRE - or “Financially Independent, Retire Early” - movement. Dianne knew she had always wanted to retire before 50 and live in Colorado, but Guillermo, being Bolivian-American, told Dianne he was culturally raised with the idea that he should work as long and hard as he could to provide for his family. After a thoughtful presentation Dianne put together, Guillermo was convinced and even one-upped her idea and suggested they live in different countries around the world. Currently they live in Lisbon, Portugal and are vlogging to document their life and financial journey.

I really need professional aid because my portfolio is down over (15%) just in the past month alone. It's been that way for the majority of 2023. Could you please suggest one?
Last two years, I pulled out my money and invested with her wealth manager. Not catching up with her profits over the years, but at least I earn more. I'm making money even before retiring, and my retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha.
It's unfortunate most people don't have such information. I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than $21k passively by just investing through an advisor, and I don't have to do much work. Doesn't matter if the economy is misbehaving; great wealth managers will always make returns.

I retired at 47 when everyone thought I was crazy. I had $2m saved and everyone told me how crazy I was. How bored I would be. Well, I am still married, we have travelled the world and my kids got through university. We are now worth €3m and I have loved every day. If you want to retire then do it. The race and stress free life is amazing. Don’t listen to those that are jealous and try to guilt trip you into still working

I know couples making over 250K combined who do not save. This couple really shows what can be achieved if you saved. And I am so happy for them that they were not just workaholics. They traveled and discovered what they enjoy when they’re not working.

I wish I knew about FIRE 25 years ago. I program for a living and make good money. My wife makes even more than me. We make more than the couple in this video and while our retirement is set, we should a. have way more money (I made so many dumb financial decisions) and b. be able to retire earlier. I get so jealous when I hear about people retiring in their 30s and 40s. I then get angry when I realize my wife and I almost always make more money. I feel like every high school should have one money management class. How to invest. Where you should spend and where you shouldn't. Oh well, it is what it is.

True, initially I wasn't quite impressed with my gains, opposed to my previous performances, I was doing so badly, figured I needed to diversify into better assets, I touched base with a portfolio-advisor and that same year, I pulled a net gain of $550k...that's like 7times more than I average on my own.

Hi guys! Absolutely agree to keeping a budget! It's vital to meeting your goals. Best of luck on your journey to finding that place, and maybe that place is many places. After 3 years in our journey of doing what you are doing (essentially), we are realizing there may be many places we want to live, at different times of the year. Although I'm having yearnings of owning my own place and not being beholden to landlords and their sometimes unusual demands. In Europe this is possible as so many cultures and experiences lie so close to each other. A 100 dollar plane ride or 1 hour car ride close. Best of luck! xx

Combined couple income of almost 300k - that's the part a lot of working people will struggle with. At that income, depending on how frugal you are with expenses and where you decide to live - of course retiring early will be dramatically easier. 60% to 70% of Americans earn less than 60,000 a year. I'm not saying this can't be done, and it's awesome that people like these two have been able to retire early - but keep in mind that most people in America are not all living the same reality and have the same options.
That's why it's important as single person not to have kids and not get married to focus on investing and saving and multiple income streams
With internet you can make it if you focus. Even if you have to live in a car for a few yrs you can make it

I actually lived abroad for 8 months. Saw and experienced many beautiful things. Their came a time where I missed my family so much it wasn’t worth it any longer. They have each other and that’s ultimately the key. I’m willing to bet things change with grandkids.

Joined the Navy at 18 with 7k in the bank. I did janitorial and smoked a lot of pot in high school. Left the Navy after months with 40k in the bank. Invested 30k in the S&P stocks. Started working at UPS, Exide Battery and did concrete on Saturdays. Invested 1k a month every month into it with my Financial advisor James Fletcher Brennan, Cashed out 350k from the S&P Cashed out and Semi retired at 31. Took a year off. Traveled. Came home and started working part time just for the insurance, entertainment and pocket change and still investing in stocks with a 3 million net worth, Work isn't work when you don't have to work. Becoming wealthy can be done in few years. It feels like 60hr work weeks. Feel the pain of discipline early or feel the pain of regret later. I wish everyone well!

I'm 46, also have about 2m, and no debt. I'm still concerned about outliving the money because Im super healthy and will probably live to 90. I still have 2 businesses and plan to keep them going as long as possible.
I would retire with 500K heheh and I am 47. I would buy some rentals and a one bedroom for me. Then I would get on a bike and ride away. There are all sorts of ways to retire with 2m, it just depends on your lifestyle.
I'm with you. I retired at 53 and now 55. No debt, home paid for, car paid for, insurance paid for, pulling a monthly pension and about 1mil in the bank. I worry everyday (a little).
I guarantee you won't live as long as you think. Everyone is living "super long" until they get hit with health problems out of the blue

I'm 47 have $1.5M and 0 debt. Fire wasn't a term I was aware of 22 years ago but my husband and I decided to be able to live off 1 income and save the other. We couldn't do that for awhile when we had 3 kids but stuck to it as much as possible. I've retired "for now" but my husband still works but understand he can quit if he feels like it. We feel so much at ease even with the high inflation. We enjoy life by living a nomadic lifestyle travelling the US and pretty soon we will be traveling international. All these things we thought we would do in our 60s we have been doing for the last 2 years.

I understand the concept of financial freedom, but for many couples and families, it comes at a cost of having to move to a cheaper, foreign country and saying goodbye to their close family and friends and support network back in America. I don’t think I could do it. But props to the people that can.

I think it's telling you that to have financial freedom sometimes you need to move somewhere else. A place with universal healthcare, no gun violence, and an affordable cost of living. I'm sure you could visit your family from time to time and they will appreciate the opportunity to visit you and discover a new country in the process.
There's a lot of people out there who lost their parents already and when that happens it's much easier to move away. Friends can always visit and about the rest of the family the truth is a lot of people are actually happy to be far away 😅
@Kalina Vu- Very true, even just going on vacation, eventually makes me feel ready to comeback. Some folks are very comfortable with traveling around the world. It's definitely not for everyone.

I’m married and I have traveled solo to a couple of countries. My wife won’t travel unless we take our daughter she is 6. This October we are planning to go to Barcelona and Paris. I don’t think my wife would ever leave my daughter alone for her to go enjoy traveling with me. That is just nuts.

I score this video about 5.7 out of 10 because there was no mention of how medical needs are paid and how much and no mention about if they can buy investment property in those countries and no mention of how they were able to legally live in those countries longterm.

Great story. Wondering about health insurance and health care overseas as Americans
Healthcare on both places we've lived (Mexico and Portugal) have been superb. In Mexico, doctors were trained in the U.S. and many spoke English fluently. Hospitals and medical equipment were excellent with well trained staff. Doctors (not the assistants) spent a entire hour or more with us evaluating our cases. In Portugal, is very similar and also inexpensive. Although we use Allianz as our medical insurance, we usually pay out of pocket for simple appointments or prescriptions.
A career which gives you a little bit of time and work-life balance costs you financial independence because it'll be low paying. Tough choices to make. Keep in mind, investing provides a jumpstart to financial freedom. At 34, I already have a $6m portfolio.
Everyone needs to hear this, you need to create your own process, manage risk and stick to the plan, thick or thin, while continually learning from mistakes and improving
Money advice is subjective, what works for you may not work for someone else, but it's always better to plan. I'm quite lucky exposed to personal finance at an early age, started job 19, bought first home 28, got laid-off work 36 amid covid-outbreak, and at once I consulted an advisor to handle growing my finance. As of today, I'm only 25% short of my $1m goal after subsequent investments.

Unfortunately for a vast majority of Portuguese people, 3500 USD a month expenses is impossible. I can also understand why they are renting in Lisbon, because their 150 thousand USD property In the US allows them to buy only the crappiest and smallest of apartments in Lisbon. That being said, they did the right thing. So many people in richer countries already have enough money to retire and don’t even realize that. Others realize that they will never retire… Portugal is one of those countries that in general doesn’t give the chance to save much money, as wages are too low and cost of living for Portuguese becomes high. Minimum wage is around 700 euros in 2022, that is before taxes. So there you have it….
As a portuguese I "had" to move out of Portugal to live in the Netherlands almost 20 yrs ago in order to have some financial room to breathe because in Portugal I was suffocating...In PT if you earn less than 1000 euros per month you probably live from pay check to pay check and by the last week of each month you may have to make decisions about how to spend the little money you have left...if there's any. But having said that it's nice to see people from all over the world enjoying the country and moving there. I'll do that when I retire...aged 65 or maybe even 67...😅

I cannot understand how two people need 3.700€ per month. That is not a very frugal lifestyle. They could spend a lot less and live a good life too.
We are around $6M networth in our late 40s. We wish to do the same but our younger son just went to high school. We will be waiting till he graduates HS and then take off. We hope to get to $10M by then… We really want to have “Fat FIRE” instead of the “lean FIRE” that everyone aspires for. I think we will get there comfortably.
Our investments are spread across every asset class Real Estate, stocks, crypto, gold etc…

@@ariefraiser140 “Extra fat fire” maybe 😝. We live SF Bay Area so we need that extra cushion just in case. And no, we do not want to move to Idaho or Texas or some other unfamiliar place. I worked too hard so that I shouldn’t have to move in retirement!

Early saving and investing money creates compounds growth, it's a beautiful thing.But it takes focus and discipline. You need to be focused enough to commit to a plan and a process.Retried with a 7 figure portfolio and receiving about $243k in dividends. I have been in the stock market about 20 years. Am I worried? Am I selling? Absolutely not. I have purchase growth stocks too a little at a time over the past few weeks. I am going to sit back and observe how this all plays out, adding more at a time. my investment strategy with my FA actually calms me down. Eye on the prize, stay the course!

Best thing we can all do is grow our rental portfolio and live off of our residual income. Doing this can retire us at a young age and help us have more time doing what we love.

It's my third month being retired now. And life hasn't been so difficult as I thought basically because I put my head down and made ways for other source of Income. I'm a huge fan of earning more money, and I think everyone should have a side hustle. @@brownkelly2033 You can buy dividend ETFs if you don't want to get into individual stocks. My favorite is SCHD. you can use a coach as well.

Good for them! It's so important to diversify your portfolio. I knew somebody who was entirely in crypto...and lost everything. I kept telling them, they needed to purchase a home--even a cheapy. But their attitude was, if I can't get a home on the beach, I'll just keep doing crypto until I can buy one with cold hard cash. This destroyed their retirement.
