Some good advice there. I’m planning to plant a bare root beech hedge this winter. I want it to grow high but bushy at the bottom. Should I cut the top and the sides at the same time?
@@radharcanna Hi Sean, sorry for the delayed reply. Many thanks for watching the video and the message. To get the best hedge I would always suggest to take the top off the hedge, just by a couple of inches, to encourage side growth and to create a more bushy hedge. Once the hedge has thickened up, next spring, give the sides a light trim. The trim to the sides of the hedge will then encourage top growth at a quicker rate. As you are planting as a bare root hedge make sure to do some ground preparation first. Dig the area in which you are planting and remove roots and large stones. Incorporate some fresh compost or stable manure to the ground, mixing it 50:50 with the existing soil. Plant the plants in October/November, ensuring to firm them in well to avoid creating air pockets in the ground. Water as necessary and keep moist in the spring and summer. Hope this helps you. All the best with your hedge. 🌻🪴
@@diyhomeandgardening Thank you so much for that detailed advice and for taking the time to write it. It’s very useful advice. I’ll now have much more confidence in my hedge planting.
Hi. Thanks for watching and messaging. I guess the question is what cutting tools do you have? Easy to cut, thinner stems, then secateurs or hand loppers will be fine. If the branches are more substantial then a tree pruning saw is going to be your friend. I wouldn’t try to use anything petrol driven unless you have experience or horizontal cutting at height. If it was me then I would use my fold out pruning saw and loppers for the main work and then tidy the smaller stuff by using electric hedge cutter. I hope this gives you a little help. Take care not to fall off any ladders or steps! Happy pruning 🌲

I’m glad I’m not the only one who uses a spirit level; I now have my own, extra long spirit level for use outside which is MINE. 😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Glad to hear it
