UPDATE: This radio does not actually utilize a "K" plug for the speaker mic connection. It's an easy assumption to make on visual inspection. A "K" plug will fit but the spacing is slightly off and the result will be a hot mic that continually transmits. What it actually uses, oddly enough, is an Icom plug. Very similar but wired differently and the pin spacing is roughly 1/16" off. I did a follow up video on this.
This is my favorite EDC HT. The speaker sounds excellent. The antenna reception receives and transmits far and well. The battery lasts a long time. It is easy to use. It is easy to program directly. It is durable and has a 67 IP rating. You can listen to FM radio, and NOAA. For the price I am not afraid to use it daily outdoors, in any type of weather.
Hi! Manual is unclear about dual watch - does the radio listen on both bands simultanously? (Master / Slave) Rationale: want to use the radio to communicate privately on 1 channel, but listen tk group conversation on a second one. If not, does activity on the slave trigger the star indicator (lower left) and a voice notification? (How would I know activity on the slave without actually looking on the display all the time) Alternatively, what halpens if PTT in scan mode? Does it transmit on master channel, or stop at the current channel in search and transmit there? Thanks!
big question for me is. i see it has dual display but does it have dual receive? dual display means nothing to me unless it receives on both. thanks for putting up the video with more detail and comparison unlike others i have seen.
That's my work radio! Tough, water proof, not tooooo expensive, a tuning knob, and fully front face programmable! Only con I've got is it's a little on the quiet side...

On the ft65, the UP/DOWN buttons aren't the only ways to change channels. It has direct channel change by using the buttons. For example, to go to channel 27, just input 27 from keypad.
Yes, I'm aware of that. There are even more ways to change the channels. However, the point I was making is that you can't make any channel adjustments without removing the radio from its pouch.
Nice review, thanks. You went over the features and how it is programmed but how does it perform? What is the output wattage? How does the audio quality sound compared to….can you hit the distant repeaters the same as your other HT’s just looking for detail on how it performs..
I prefer a knob for channels but I only have the main few repeaters and call frequencies in my ft-65 for daily use to keep it simple with a few button pushes needed. My tri band TYT HT I have a ton of repeaters in 3 bands. I don't even use my fancy $600 Yaesu and Icom radios. I got them both for free luckily. Haven't had time to learn Dstar & Fusion yet.
Excellent video. I agree completely especially on the programming cable garbage. Alinco would sell at least twice as many radios if the programming cable and the software were available and I'm not paying 50 bucks for software that I'm going to use one or two times what are these guys going to pull their head out. That's really my only complaint about this radio is exactly what you described. It's just nonsense if you ask me.
I am looking at this radio for a secondary back up radio. Is this radio a true dual receive? I would like to use it in cross band repeat with my mobile radios
I bought my vx50 in 2021. It has been excellent experience since then. But last January this year it dies every time i press rhe ptt. Luckily it's just the battery that's defective and swollen, no issue with the unit.
Scott. Great Videos. Keep them coming. Just subscribed recently. These 2 are both direct conversion, which is fine with me. By chance, can you provide your thoughts on the comparison between their receive sensitivity, RF rejection and filtering, as well as audio quality? Thanks!
Gracias

I liked mine so well, I bought two of them. I use an MFJ 1714 1/2 wave antenna. Well worth $99. Great video as usual.

I would really like to know what you think of this Alinco compared to the Yaesu FT 60r?

Do you consider this radio as better one comparing to FT65, after videos about cable/programming published by HAM RADIO DUDE?

Rt systems have software and cable together.
Hi scott how is the aircraft receive. Thanks 73 N3VZO
Just retired so is this a good radio for beginners who know nothing about ham radios?
Chirp is a must for me. I only have a ubuntu puter.

Bought the radio. Super happy! Is proper dual watch.
Ext mic gain is inconsistent between units. Maybe have to open it up to adjust?
great review. yeah i dropped 50 on rt software/cable...
Alinco may be produced in China, like so many things, but the company Alinco is a Japanese company.
True- Alinco has manufacturing sites in both China and Japan.
Kindly make a review on alinco dj crx 7
I like mine it's a tough radio

I do not think it is a superheterodyne radio. It may not matter.
It isn't. It has direct conversion receiver, but it's worth its price.
I feel like this radio is 90% of the IC-T10 at 50% of the price.
