The topic: Misha's acting choices come back to haunt him - and Jensen shares a story of Misha's first day on set. FULL TEXT (courtesy of Liana Bekakos @ eclipsemagazine...)
MAUREEN: Any one else want to give a do-over?
MISHA: Sure, I have one. In the first episode where Castiel shows up and he's trying to communicate with Dean and in so doing his angelic voice is exploding television sets and breaking windows... I, being the consummate guest star that I am, thought that I would do this really [demonstrates voice] deep, gravelly, commanding, kick-ass, window-breaking voice. [normal voice after slight hesitation] I may be running into medical problems now. It has been brutal on my throat. So yeah... regret. What would be nice is if somehow Castiel has a tank of helium with him, and he [inhales] and then he talks like I do normally.
JENSEN: I remember when we filmed that scene and it was the first time he came in and I worked with him. He went into... this voice and this spiel. After the first take, I turned to our camera department and [incredulously] 'what is he doing?!' [draws in a breath through clenched teeth feigning disbelief] 'did he audition?!' [laughter] But he knows that, I've told him about this.
JARED: Yeah, he said the same thing to me, 'cause I didn't have a scene with (Misha). I asked, 'hey, how's the new guy?'
JENSEN: Really nice! But what the hell is he doing on camera?
JARED: He's strange! He's not a bad actor, obviously... he's just ... really strange. And so we walk past him and (Jensen) is [acting out a nudge on the arm] 'I think he's in character, look, look' [the panel and the audience go into uncontrollable laughter; Jared turns to Misha to ask if he was in character at the time, but Misha shakes his head unable to remember] I remember specifically one moment that he was standing behind the grip truck eating something, must have been yogurt or granola or something. We walk past going from Stage 3 to our trailers and Jensen (taps the arm) says 'there he is' and we both sort of do this [acting out avoidance]
JENSEN: There's the freak.
JARED: And Misha has a very pensive look about him, even when he's relaxing. "Yeah, yeah, looks like he's thinking or something."
JENSEN: And / or on the toilet. But I will say that his consistency in that character has been--
JARED: --his saving grace! (chuckles)
JENSEN: It's really grown on me. [reaching over and patting Misha on the knee, in all seriousness] Nice job, buddy!

I've come to the realisation when the three leads in your favourite tv show are all sitting the same way in an interview and you say out loud to yourself 'there's my boys', that you need professional help.
But oh my god I love them

Yeah, Jensen makes fun of him, but if you compare Deans voice along the way, at Season 9, Deans voice is rougher (or more physically abrasive throat-wise) now then Castiel. That's what makes me laugh.
The thing is, Jensen's own voice has been going deeper through all these seasons, hence naturally, Dean's has been too, since he speaks lower as Dean.
Someone noted online, it's like he went through a second puberty from season 1 to 7 lol xD
I remembered last year on JIB, Jensen once said he and Misha might seek medical help at some point. lol
I recently heard how, for awhile, they had a 'contest' to see whose voice could be deeper.

tbh i wish every guest actor showed the same level of thought, insight and devotion that misha did. he entered the show like a freakin hurricane and injected a whole new layer. it's what won him the bigger role - "lightning in a bottle" as the producers put it. you're playing goddamn angels guys - otherworldly celestial beings BILLIONS of years old contained within a tiny little vessel in order to walk the earth for the first time in millennia. it's a mind blowing concept.
so why are you all boring, perfectly comfortable and whiny ass business men/women (seriously - wtf why is EVERY angel's vessel always dressed to the 9s in a 9-5 suit?.......except tractor!angel. he was awesome.) with nothing identifiable about you AT ALL outside of the props department.
misha correctly put thought into how this etheral being older than the earth itself would look and act with his every movement and posture. he set a VERY high bar in the tone that these beings should encapsulate........one that NO ONE ELSE bothered to care about, with the one exception of ezekiel, whose actor also put in some effort. but all the quicky guest angels have been bland. as. fuck. how many times has the script said that they don't interact with humanity and many actually have an active disdain for it. how many times has it said that they don't understand humanity and it's ways or cultures - yet they're totally indistinguishable and completely unidentifiable as being anything remotely different themselves. lazy acting.

Damn, what a good comment! Spot on. Misha created the other-worldliness to Castiel even when he was only a guest star. The whole angel arc felt flat on its face because writers assumed that all the angel actors and actresses would deliver on the same level as Misha did. Turned out viewers couldn't distinguish between an angel, a demon, or a leviathan because they all dressed in well-cut suits, drank scotch, and acted like "douchbag" salesmen.
The one playing Hannah was good.
I think you're right in a sense, but it also has a lot to do with the writing. The actors can only do so much with the script that they're given. They don't stand out because they're not supposed to. The reason Cas stood out so much, even from the beginning did have a lot to do with how great he was at playing his role (and he fucking owned it) but it's also because even while he was only originally meant to be in a few episodes, he still played a bigger and more important role than the other Angels that were casted. He's the one that raised Dean from perdition, he's supposed to stand out more than the other Angels.
I agree he plays the part amazingly. I think that Gabriel played an angel well too though, just a tricky one.
Winster Chesty That's a good point, many of the angels that actually had multiple appearances were well matched to their characterization; Raphael for example was rightly menacing as archangel gone power hungry, Metatron was quite human having spent so long among them (though still showed contempt). The thing is though, I think it may be intended that angels/demons/leviathan all start to blend into each other. In the end, they're all Supernatural beings that have ulterior motives, and could squash a human with ease without hesitation if any stood in their way. Species doesn't matter, angels can go bad, demons can be allies.
I love how Misha is laughing just as hard as anyone.

and also his looks goddamn it he loooks like an angel to me and also he's very innocent and childlike which is why the angel thing fits him very well. I'm glad they cast Misha as Castiel I couldn't imagine any other actor playing Castiel.

One thing I love about the voice Misha gives Cas is that sometimes he sorta changes it like in the episode where Zachariah (i think) sends Dean to the future and he ends up meeting future!Cas and future!Cas doesn't have the manly deep voice, and also Season 7 (i think) when Cas went a bit crazy he changed up the voice a bit so it's kinda flighty and disconnected.
Thanks to NetFlix i'm new to the supernatural bandwagon- but i'm def hooked! Story like is usually cheesy but I stay for the eye candy.
