    Really like the nearly perfect symbiosis of pictures, cuts and audio. So it becomes very very VERY catchy. This is well done promo for Magic Lantern but still more for Costa del Sol :-)

    Amazing! This video alone shows that it doesn't matter about what kind of camera you buy. It's how you use the camera and light, and you truly nailed it! I have a t4i and was skeptical of getting ML and thinking of just shovelling out some money for a new one. But for what I would be using it for would be little 5 min shorts. You've more than convinced me that my camera will be able to work wonders as well. Very inspirational video for it just chronicling your trip. Thanks for this!

      Myron Tataryn Thanks for your words! The t4i is really a great tool for filmaking in a budget. Don't be afraid to install ML and get all the potential of this camera. RAW implies a more complicated workflow and I don't recommend it for everyday recordings, but for something special it delivers a lot!

    vlad radoj, you can record sound with Magic Lantern if you shoot with the standard files. You can't record sound when you record raw with ML. But they came up with another format, "mlv" that records raw with a separate wav file. But it lets you record less frames.
    I personally wouldn't sacrifice more frames for sound. If I need sound when I shoot raw I record it separately.

      How many fps are you able to shoot at 1080p? Im looking for a solution that would allow me to shoot 60fps in 1080p on the t4i, thanks!

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  8 років тому

      Hi, in 1080p shooting raw you cannot make more than just a few frames, if it was even possible, I don't remember well. I think only with the 5D Mark III you will get 1080p raw with Magic Lantern. emperor

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  8 років тому

      No, it was shot something like 1650x575 pixels or something like that and then upscaled to 1920x822 (to get the 2.35:1 aspect ratio). Numbers are not exact because I don't remember now but it was something like that. When you record 1650px wide in raw and you upscale to 1920 it still looks better than the proper h264 canon file.

    I just ordered nd filter kit and own 3 lens 50,200 and the kit lens. This video looks Professional and Hollywood level. I am a UA-cam partner and never thought my t4i is a gem in a camera bag. I usually use the Sony hdx220 for all my videos but time to buy a faster card and try magic lantern. Dang great job

    Hello Andrés. Beautiful footage. I really like it, specially having roots there. May I ask you what is your workflow? And what nightly build are u using? Thanks a lot.

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  9 років тому

      Guillermo Garcia Hello, thanks for your words! My workflow with RAW goes like this: shoot raw -> copy raw files to hard drive -> run "batchelor 3" (it runs raw2dng and put all the extracted dngs in their own folder) this takes A LOT of time -> view dng sequences with mlrawviever to find the in-out editing points of each video -> open dng sequences with after effects and tweak them with camera raw -> put all of them in an AE timeline and export files (I export a single one with all the videos) to .mov with blackmagic 4:4:4 10-bit free video codec -> START EDITING in Premiere!!
      One very important thing regarding the t4i is that I changed the "raw2dng" program that batchelor runs with "raw2dng_cs2x2" to get rid of the green/pink dots that the camera records in RAW. I used standard raw, not the latest raw format MLV.
      This, of course, makes RAW recording a process that I can only justify to make special things, not for everyday recordings or longer events. I only used it for short films or this video, where I wanted to extract all the possible detail and dynamic range this camera can deliver. And I am so glad I used RAW here! For everything else, h264 gives me what 99% of the jobs I do require, and ML helps me get the image right with its menus and options.
      I think I use a nightly build from August 2014! I just forgot to upgrade it and since it has volume meters (even they may be not accurate, at least I know when sound is entering) I didn't feel the need to upgrade. But I will surely try a more recent nightly build because probably the code is a little cleaner each time.

    • @Andresvideo

      I used Pink dot removal as I recall now. I think there was a program used to transform the raw videos to useable dngs that deleted the pixels automatically. I don't remember what version of pink dot removal was, but I am sure in other comments I did a whole raw workflow explanation

      +jesus carranza Muchas gracias, la 650D la sigo usando aún para muchos trabajos! En este vídeo en particular usé el modo de grabación en raw (sin comprimir) que le aporta Magic Lantern. Por eso la calidad de la imagen es muy superior a la que normalmente graba esta cámara. Pero es un proceso bastante engorroso de utilizar, ficheros grandísimos y muy laborioso de hacer. En mi vídeo de Cazorla usé el formato original de la cámara.

    nice video. Im thinking of getting this camera along with the kit 18-55 STM lens. But i read in reviews that video auto focus tracking is a not usable for fast moving subjects. I'm new to videography but i want to use this to make you tube videos of cars driving. Do you think this camera could handle this?

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  9 років тому

      lordoftheflings Thanks. I never use autofocus, I prefer to rely on my eyes an instinct for keeping focus. If you are shooting wide open (let's say at 18mm with the lens kit) and at 3.5, almost everything is going to be in focus. Focusing is harder (because the depth of field gets narrower) the longer the focal distance and the lower the f-number. Depending on how fast the cars move, it will be easier or harder to keep them in frame, besides focusing! You can also look for used lenses and get a telephoto if the cars are going to be far away from the camera. Everything depends on what and how are you going to shoot.I hope that helps :)

    very nice video ! is it possible to film at 1280x720 without stopping ?

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  10 років тому +3

      Thank you! Yes, it is possible. I can do it with my SanDisk Extreme 16GB 45MB/s cards and my Extreme PRO 32GB 95MB/s. Cards with 45MB/s are capable of recording 1280x720. You don't really benefit from speeds above that because maximum recording speed in the 650D is 37-38MB/s.

    • @BigyanGautamphobic
      @BigyanGautamphobic 10 років тому

      Andres Mata Tome is 45mb/s card enough for 1344x672 continuous recording? thanks in advance.

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  10 років тому

      Bigyan Gautam Hi, with my SanDisk Extreme (with the silver letters) 45MB/s 16GB Class10 UHS1, yes, it is possible. I just recorded a 1minute20 second clip to try it with no problem. Besides, you will see when you dial in your raw resolution, in the 650D-t4i screen, at the bottom, it tells you the write speed (in this case, 37.6MB/s) and it appears in green color. If you up your resolution will appear in yellow if the write speed does not allow continous recording. I hope you got it clearer from my explanation!

    • @BigyanGautamphobic
      @BigyanGautamphobic 10 років тому

      thanks for the quick response. I was also wondering what maximum resolution could 95mb/s extreme pro card could give me with 14 bit raw on the t4i? or wold it be worthless to buy it because of the camera's writespeed bottleneck? thanks again :)

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  10 років тому

      Bigyan Gautam You hit the point there: It doesn't matter for the t4i. It only writes at a maximum of 38MB/s approx. So 95MB/s won't give you more time at bigger resolutions. I also have a 95MB/s SanDisk and it's a great card, but gives me almost identical recording time that the 45MB/s. You can gain like 1-2 extra seconds in higher resolutions by recording 24fps instead of 25fps (if you are in Europe 25fps is standard). It makes that little difference.

    hi there fantastic video! i really admire the quality and effort put into this piece of work, i have a question and my apologies if it has been answered already, what rigs or stabilizers did you use in order to film this ? and could you recommend any cheap rig solutions for filming a short film. Thank you!

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  9 років тому +1

      Thanks a lot for your comment! I used a slider (roller bearing type), a steadycam "flycam 5000" and a Hague K8 crane for some shots. The best and cheapest rig solution for your DSLR camera is the shoulder support like this one: www.amazon.com/CowboyStudio-Shoulder-Support-Camcorder-Camera/dp/B0036NMQ7S
      It's really cheap and it does a great job. Other than that, a sturdy tripod with a good fluid head is mandatory. The next piece of kit I would get is the slider. You can get amazing shots with it, that will add a lot of production value to your short.
      With the tripod, shoulder rig and a small slider (you can even try to DIY, also a skater dolly) you have a lot of posibilities for shooting. I never go handheld with DSLRs!

      Andres Mata Tome Do you focus and zoom with a remote?

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  9 років тому

      Jasper T. No, I use the screen for focusing. I don't zooms with the primes (the Tokina 11-16 would allow a little zoom, but I almost never do it while recording). The rotating screen in the t4i is really helpful for getting low or high angles with the camera and still being able to focus. I highly recommend to use the LCD view option "slightly sharper" in Magic Lantern menu. It makes a world of difference to me!
      I don't use an follow focus, either. I have one that is not very accurate, and I prefer the touch of my fingers directly on the lens ring! It's a matter of taste and practice, I guess! :)

    Great video. A few questions. Did you use a nd filter or polarizer on the lens to get the sky so blue?

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  9 років тому +2

      Thanks! I used ND filters to be able to shoot at 5.6 or so, not polarizers or gradient NDs. The blue sky comes out of a proper exposure, and, most of all, recording in raw. With raw you can apply specific settings to colors. At 0:08 I am sure I added saturation and lowered brightness to blue and aquamarine colors to get that sky. Also drew a gradient and decreased exposure and increased clarity for the sky and clouds. You can get pretty impressive results with raw in wide shots!

      This particular video was shot using Magic Lantern's raw recording capability. If this is your first camera I wouldn't recommend you use this feature until you are a more experienced user.
      However, this camera is capable of achieving great images. Check my "Summer in Cazorla" video, shot with the normal settings of the camera.

    Good job! One question nobody seems to answer out right: In your opinion, does 720P RAW upscaled to 1080P look better then 1080P H.264? (with your camera, of course) I love better flexibility with color but I don't know if it's worth destroying my resolution for it considering most people will be watching my productions Fullscreen. It would be awesome if you could answer the first question though. ha.

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  8 років тому

      +James Rivera Hi, thank you for your words! In my opinion 720p raw upscaled looks really better than 1080p h264. Depending on what you are shooting it can be MUCH better! :)
      However, if you are shooting narrative pieces you can go for a narrower frame ratio (for example 2:1 or 2,35:1) and record a bigger image (1500x800 or something like that) and you have less scalation to do.
      Besides, remember that these cameras don't do REAL 1080p. They already upscale from something smaller, and when you shoot raw you are getting real 720 lines of pixels. So canon is already upscaling anyway!
      But the best way is to go and shoot something and compare it for yourself! ;)
      Beware that raw workflow can be a pain in the ass, very time consuming and big big file size. But for certain projects, totally worth the effort!!

    • @sauce8277
      @sauce8277 8 років тому

      Andres Mata Tome Wow. Thanks man for that well-said answer. Learned a bit as well. I totally agree. How you shoot depends on what your are trying to do. It's not for everything! And yes, I will definitely test it out. Maybe good for landscape/nature shots for the more in-depth color information? Who knows. Thanks again.

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  8 років тому +1

      James Rivera You got it! For wide shots it really shines because it resolves much more detail! 14bit color is always welcome, hehe! Medium and close shots is what DSLRs dazzled us all with, its their strong point, with the narrow depth of field, etc. But wide shots really need detail. I also used for some time the increased bit rate option provided with Magic Lantern, but never really checked if there was a real improvement in image quality.

    Amazing
    Any filters used?
    Like ND or IR?

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  8 років тому +2

      +Zack Alfrex ND aaaaall the time. Used cheap plastic ones, they are like 15$ a package. Some can get color casts and some don't. The darker the filter, more probable that it has color casts (due to IR pollution, that is right). Here I didn't use any IR cut filter. For this video I often stack ND8 + ND4 and use f8-9 if needed, also 1/100 shutter... depending on how sunny the scene was, but always with the NDs on. I really don't want to go over 1/100 or 1/150 shutter speed... it makes movement in the scene really strange.

    Great video, it inspired me to finally download ML for my 650d. I have a problem though. When shooting in 1600by800 I get really bad aliasing on power lines and other straight lines. Have you encountered this? If so how did you get around it?

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  10 років тому

      Cool! I recently noticed aliasing appearing in some shots with long diagonal or curved lines, as you mention, but I found out when you upscale the footage to 1920x1080 or downscale it to 720p, it becomes softer and, unless is really prominent in the frame or a really long shot, nobody realizes it (only pixel peepers like us!)
      We see every mistake in our videos, but 99% of the potential viewers won't notice them. It would be better not having those problems around, but there's no solution as far as I know. I am so happy I will continue using raw whenever the project needs it, it's not for an everyday use for sure.
      Congratulations on using ML in your camera, you will see how much it can help you! It's a fun tool, also!

    and if possible can you post the ML settings you used for your film shots. I'm surprised you were able to make the 650D look very crisp and professional.

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  10 років тому +2

      Thanks a lot, Viki!
      I used Magic Lantern Raw video for recording this, so I can tell you, there is a really long process transcoding the files to a format you can edit with. It's really not something for daily use, just for specific things because it takes really long to export and "develop" each clip in adobe camera raw. You can just increase the bit rate of the normal h264 videos with Magic Lantern, if you want to add a little to your files without changing your whole workflow.
      I always use the Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 and the 50mm 1,8 (really cheap this one), and a Samyang 85mm 1.4 for some shots.
      You can check my latest shortfilm, "Negocios de Familia", which we made in 24 hours (no sleep, hehe) and also used raw videos. You can watch it here:

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  9 років тому

      Jasper T. I do, but if you shoot raw you can easily change it because it doesn't bake the white balance info. But this is only in raw. It's better to dial in the white balance always before you shoot. With Magic Lantern installed you can do it in ºK, without it you only have Canon's presets, but they also work fine.

    I've been doing research to buy a new camera and I found your footage. Absolutely gorgeous! After spending some time with the T4i, do you still enjoy using it? How did it hold up on the trip? Knowing what you know now, would you still pick the T4i or go with a different camera? Thanks in advance and keep up the great shooting!

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  10 років тому +1

      Thank you so much for your comment!
      You wouldn't believe where I have put the T4i into! A cement factory, the beach, mountains, rivers, caves... it never failed at all, even I had it covered in cement dust! (but I was really scared, hehehe!) For the money it costs I think I could have never chosen a better tool. 8bit h264 footage is weak sometimes but when you get to know it and how far you can push it, you can do great things with it.
      I have been considering an upgrade for some time now, but I don't find the complete tool I am looking for at a reasonable price (in my posibilities). I regret I missed the Blackmagic Pocket 50% off sale because I wanted to try a stronger codec, but I have a little more flexibility and ease of use with the T4i so I will just save for a bigger "toy" ;)
      Really wanting Blackmagic to fix the little things that make their products a little risky, like the 4K Production Camera and the fixed dot pattern. I really don't need 4K at the moment (or in the near future) but 4K images downsampled to 1080 gives amazing detail. Pair that with strong codec and more dynamic range and you have a winner.
      So in conclussion, I cannot be happier with the T4i. Pitty that the raw capabilities are not the same as the MarkIII, but anyway raw is not for every project. A better codec (and only 10bits instead of 8) and better dynamic range are what I am looking for in my next camera. Until I find that in a sub $2.000 product, I am sticking to my trusty T4i. And OF COURSE with Magic Lantern in it. That little hack doubled the value of the camera with those extra functions I use aaaall the time!
      And remember, the camera is just a tool, enhance its strong points and learn how to elude its weakneses and you will get the best footage you can with any of them.
      Regards!
      Andres.

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  10 років тому +1

      Hi! Glad you liked it! I don't remember when it was included, but I am using an August build and it has it for sure! The pink dots are still there, but transcoding to dng with raw2dng_cs2x2 does an excellent job removing them. It uses croma smoothing. It's not the ideal solution (would be better not to have them) but it works fine :)
      My workflow goes like this: shoot raw -> copy raw files to hard drive -> run batchelor 3 (it runs raw2dng and put all the extracted dngs in their own folder) -> view dng sequences with mlrawviever to find the in-out points of each video -> open dng sequences with after effects and tweak them with camera raw -> export files (I export a single one with all the videos) to .mov with blackmagic 4:4:4 10-bit free video codec -> START EDITING!!
      Looks tougher than it really is, at least for small projects like this 3-4 minute video.
      In Batchelor3 folder, I changed the default raw2dng executable file for the raw2dng_cs2x2 that removes pink dots from the 650D footage. Otherwise the default one will output dngs with the dots in them.
      I hope it helps! And remember raw is not for every project. Sometimes improved CBR in ML will work just fine for a lot of projects.

      Thank you! I recorded most of it at 1344x672 in 2:1 aspect ratio to get non stop recording. I did a few shots in 1600x800 but it only gave me 9 seconds of recording. If 9 seconds is all you need for your shots, I would go for the 1600x800 because is much better for upscaling to full HD

      morphproducti0ns Wow, you are very kind! Thanks! :)
      Let's see if you can spot the 2 shots that were not raw! There are like 4 in total, but 2 of them really pop out so badly because the color correction made them render really awful!

      Does pinkdotremover work on resolutions other than 720p for you? Or do you do chroma smoothing? Well done.

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  10 років тому +2

      Mehmet Kozal Thank you! I used raw2dng_cs2x2 which does chroma smoothing and removes the dots in all the resolutions I tried. For this video I recorded mostly at 1344x672 and a few shots in 1600x800.
      For a couple of videos I noticed raw2dng_cs2x2 worked for some frames but then, when transitioning from shadow to the sky for example, the dots appeared again. So I ran the raw file through the program again and it resolved them fine. It just happened with a couple of shots like the one at 01:36, where the image goes from dark (the sand) to open sky.
      Also in images when there is a lot of green or a lot of small details (like in 1:25) the dots are removed but little artifacts can be seen. But youtube's compression hides most of it. Not worse than if it were h264 originally!

    when you recorded in RAW was your camera lag a bit? and if its okay, what were your settings? i just started recording in RAW with ML and i have nooo idea

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  8 років тому

      +Anthony Asis Cinematography I don't remember any kind of lag in the camera. Just remember that you have a very limited amount of time for recording (except at 720p which can use continous recording). For resolutions above that, time varies from 20 to 3 seconds of recording!
      There are a lot of tutorials out there for raw recording. An important thing to know is that the post production process is very time consuming and the files are really big. I mean reaaaally big.
      I talked about my personal workflow in other comments below and in the comments of my other short film recorded in raw, here:

    First of all, amazing video. I love the whole vibe of it, really amazing! This is one of the most inspiring video's I've seen yet. Do you have any tips for making a short movie? I've also got a few questions:
    I kinda want to buy a 50mm 1.8 lens to, to use it besides my 18-135mm lens on my Canon 70D. Is it worth buying?
    And do you recommend using RAW footage for making these kind of films?
    And my last question, how did you get the "vintage" color look at 1:44 ?
    Keep up the great work!

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  9 років тому +1

      BrunovdKraan Thanks! Sorry for the late reply! If you had already purchased the 50mm 1.8, you should be really happy now. If you didn't... what are you waiting for? That lens with it's wide aperture will give you amazing shots. It's a must have for DSLR users (unless you can go for the 1.4 which is 3 times its price, but image wise there is not a noticeable difference).I recommend RAW for very short narrative films. But beware that it's a little complex and very time consuming and heavy rendering time process. The freedom that it gives and the dynamic range you get it's worth it for some projects. For events like weddings or long projects it's a pain to use. For run and gun is better (faster workflow and less space required) with h264 in spite of its flaws :(I don't remember how I got that look at 1:44, but I guess it was the time of the day (just before sunset) and the white balance and color tuning with the raw settings. But nothing really special. The magical combination of the light/moment! :)

    Sorry, how did you get rid of hybrid pixels (pink or|and blue dots) in your RAW? Did you use AE? At my exprience overexposed shots (or even sometimes normally exposed) got gray dots in whites. Have you encountered some of this and what you do in such cases? Thanks!

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  7 років тому

      I explain my raw workflow in other comments, but there was a program needed to transform the raw video to useable dngs and it removed the dots automatically. Pink dot removal or something, I don't remember now, sorry

    Which version of MagicLantern did you use? Which software do you use to edit the raw video? Did you had any problems or do you know the risks of MagicLantern?

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  7 років тому

      Wow, sorry for the late late reply. Somehow I was not receiving youtube alerts. There is NO risk at all using Magic Lantern. I have used the nighty builds to keep it as updated as possible. I don't remember ever having an issue related to Magic Lantern, is so stable.

    Hi I have 650D and Ive tried to capture raw video with magic lantern but it can only shoot 5 seconds long sequences (with sandisk sdhc 30mb/s) What sd card do you recomend and how long videos are you able to capture? thank you :)

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  9 років тому +2

      +Raymond27 Hi, for raw video you need a fast card, 30mbs can be enough for some resolutions because the camera can't output data at more than 40mbs. I used a 32GB SanDisk Extreme PRO 95MB/s c10 uhs1 and it gives continous shooting at 720p and I think my shots were at 1600x800 or something like that in 12 second shots. When you resize it to FullHD the quality is still stunning. Remember that you won't get FullHD raw with this camera no matter what card you use. It just can't do it.
      So you can get continous 720p or use other aspect ratios to get 10-15 seconds of raw recording.

    When you import the DNG sequence on AE, do you grade the footage at that moment or do you just export it as it comes (flat) then grade in Premiere?

    • @Andresvideo
      @Andresvideo  8 років тому +1

      I did color correction, more than a grade itself. I rise shadows and lower the highlights to get more dynamic range into the image. I can do a little variation if I am sure of the final look I will give to it. But just correcting the images and giving them a neutral point is the best option. If you export later 10bit mov files, you have a lot of room to play with later
