I live just a few miles from the extended center line of the runway at Offutt Air Force base in Omaha, Nebraska in the US, I've been seeing this plane fly over for 30 years. I always look up and watch!
I live on the extended centerline also, I always have to correct people who look up and say, "Look, it's Air Force One! What's the president doing here?" Then I go into the explanation of what it's real purpose is and that home base is just to the south in Bellevue. I love looking at her with the gear and flaps extended on long final, maybe I'll get a video one of these days.
Been watching flightradar24 since the end of the pullout from afghanistan searching worldwide trying to find military aircraft. Majority have no callsign or it's something that is benign. So far the interesting ones I found for U.S. Air Force are: ARSON55, TORCH20, ATOMIC1, BLOODY1, FANG4, CLAW08, BLAZE3, PISTOL1, PISTOL2, PYTHN52, PYTHN57, PYTHN56, COBRA33, COBRA6, COBRA63, and VADER07. Navy: CREEP64, CREEP61, CREEP63, CREEP54, and CREEP58. Army: CREEP.
I got to tour this plane or one similar right after I left the USAF in 1975. Much of the communications equipment and "Red Safe" was much like the ICBM site I served on a launch crew.
The E-4B is protected against the effects of electromagnetic pulse and has an electrical system designed to support advanced electronics and a wide variety of communications equipment. An advanced satellite communications system provides worldwide communication for senior leaders through the airborne operations center. Other improvements include nuclear and thermal effects shielding, acoustic control, an improved technical control facility and an upgraded air-conditioning system for cooling electrical components.
scary812 Both 747-200's used as Air Force One when carrying the president have been updated constantly with New avionics, radar, security features, and engines. There are a handful of documentaries on the topic. I'm sure officially the Air Force would be pleased if everyone like you, underestimated this machine because it is a -200. No aircraft has been maintained as well as the two.
My feeling is that an EMP (a large electromagnetic wave) would overdrive the front end (the part of a radio that first receives the signal) even if it was of an older construction. I do agree that older equipment could come back on line quicker but the older equipment is so limited in what it can do, just when you need it most. Communications would go down, maybe briefly even if it was older equipment.
Phillip Mulligan The movie, Countdown to Looking Glass, used an EC-135J, which is basically a smaller plane with a similar mission to the E-4Bs. By Dawn's Early Light, a nuclear war film from the '90s, used Nightwatch extensively. Both films are here on UA-cam and not half bad.
Old electronics need alot of power so I would say the dome is air intake for a big turbine generater! Sat dishes dont need to be to big but need transmitting power!
The President doesn't fly on this plane. This plane travels with the President on all trips outside the U.S. It is a flying military command center that the President would board in the even of a major war (U.S. Vs Russia or China etc) breaking out when he wasn't in the U.S. Among other duties this aircraft has the systems on board required to authorize and execute the launch of nuclear weapons. Hence it has the nickname the "doomsday plane."
Can someone tell me what this plane is designed for? It says United States of America, so it almost sounds like the AF 1 but it doesn't look like the presidential plane. Thank you!
These aircraft were designed to perform the Neacp role, National Emergency Airborne Command Post. They’re EMP hardened so they can survive a nuclear first strike. Where necessary can issue launch commands to land based ICBM’s. Hence the name doomsday aircraft
I'm sure that the pilots know exactly what they're doing as well as the officials being familiar with the boarding procedures, but seeing so many folks standing directly in front of the #1 and #3 and hearing an unexpectedly high rpm sound coming from the engines, this doesn't look right. I have seen a 200 with a filled baggage container sucked into the #3 of a Northwest 747 so I know how powerful these puppies can be. First time I have seen what looks like an air intact scoop atop any Air Force passenger aircraft. It seems like that may add significant drag. Of course it could be sealed with plexiglass in front and a radar device inside. Is Zurich normally this smoggy or am I looking at fog? Terrific video
Will These Planes Flyover American Secondary Schools Colleges and Universities OUSD Job Training Centers DeFremery School Santa Fe School Recreational Centers For a Fire Drill? No or Yes, Not Until 2021 due to COVID
Thats the biggest radio i have ever seen! With a fuel tank for a week of flying? What is that 80,000 gallons? That would be 4 commercial truck loads of fuel at $2 a gallon yikes ! About $150,000 a trip! New engines every 3 years! I guess its needed but first i heard of it!

I adore that engine noise. That's for not adding any silly music. Awesome vid!
+B1970T WHAT? No corporate rock or hip hop with an irritating pounding beat? Just the sounds of the engines.
I need to know what engines was those
@@nestor1417 There are 4 General Electric F103 turbofan engines
The older the engine, the cooler it sounds.

its simply beautiful isn't it
And whenever they resurface the runways we get to see them in Lincoln.

Me too
How frequent do the E-4’s fly out of Offutt?
I loved the vortices as she flew into the clouds. awesome video and many thanks for not playing some corny music just the sound of the plane..
Klasse Sound und ein echt seltener Fang! Da muss ja jemand sehr wichtiges mitgeflogen sein.
What an amazing airplane and video!

Standing on the ramp when these aircraft initiate takeoff roll, it literally punches you in the chest. Good old GE CF6.
Great Sound from this classic, nice video bud.
JUST AMAZING !!! THE VIDEO AND THE PLANE.....
This is a fantastic video, what an aircraft, the documentary on the E4B is worth watching as well......great stuff!!!
Saw one of these take off from CO Springs last year. Neat plane.
I saw this take off! Luckily I was in my friend's home very near to Kloten :) Great job maine Herr
gotta love the sound of those old GE engines.
thanks for sharing schmid :)

That is a beautiful plane.
Awesome ... on so many levels!
great video Schmiddy!
Schön!
Den Vogel hab ich mir auch gegönnt;-)
Saw this aircraft at Joint Base Andrews some weeks ago.
Nice and great video....
Great video, 5/5 stars.
Thank you for sharing, grtz.Jan
Amazing video man! Great footage. Nice filming :) liked a lot - greetings from Finland!
saw a similar one at Manila today
Awesome!!
Nice to know such a thing exists - guess i'm dumb - I had no idea!
They won't update it. Aka looking glass doomsday plane has no electronics. The avionics are old in case of emt bursts from a nuke.
A380 rto test
scary812 it has tons of.electronkcs.

Diesen Ton hatten wir in Zürich jahrelang mit der Swissair-747
There's that busy railway in the background.
This aircraft has new position lights like the ones used by Boeing 787 and latest Airbus models (do not blink).
heute war der in berlin :)
ah cool :-) eine tolle maschine :-)

I remember a nuclear war tv move called "looking glass". That was also the code name for these E-4Cs
Are these General Electric CF-6s, first generation?
Super.
Danke
What are the differences between the 747-200 and the modern 747s? This one looks physically smaller and wings thinner.
Wait. What is that??
what is the purpose of the massive scoop ?
Aleron Adams -it’s got a Hemi
😂
If the president is on board that plane would the call sign be “Doom Force One”?
who's convoy is that?
Listen to those engines!.....amazing video
What is that plane
USSECDEF is his flying pentagon
Its callsign is Grim 22? LOL
se parece al air force one
Did anybody else notice that train meet in the background at 9:13? :)
I don't think there's a basis to assume any aircraft in the Air Force inventory isn't updated as needed. That would be just plain silly.
Old electronics need alot of power so I would say the dome is air intake for a big turbine generater! Sat dishes dont need to be to big but need transmitting power!
Peter Scherling it a refueling valve, so it can be refueled by a kc135
why was it in europe, considering that the president normally uses the normal AirForce1

Look at the folks outside the fence watching. I would have too!!!
is it the camera angle or does this appear to be particularly skinny for a 747?
Can someone tell me what this plane is designed for? It says United States of America, so it almost sounds like the AF 1 but it doesn't look like the presidential plane.
Thank you!
It's primary mission is nuclear command and control.

Dead
ist me but are they the same engines on the C5M Super Galaxy
No they are different
no its you
maybe in dash model but they are both CF6's
E-4B CF6-50E2
C-5M CF6-80C2
Much different. Considering I live right outside of the Airbase that stations them
not the same. the c-5m uses a newer version but the same company GE.
those birds at 9:25 lol
It looks like it always need to have one engine running for all the electronics.
upgraded engines to 400 series, similar to pw4000s or ge cf6
Watch a movie called "By Dawns Early Light" for a great scene with the E-4 at the end of the movie.
this plane received a kick in the top of head. :)
Takeoff was so quiet than taxi

Yep, The Doomsday plane and there are 2 of them that exists.
The USAF has four E-4s.
Isn't that the doomsday plane? You know, to evacuate the president out of an area? (I think that's what it does).
