Applying a transfer belt

Identifies self by name. Identifies resident by name.
Washes hands.
Explains procedure to resident, speaking clearly, slowly, and directly. Maintains face-to-face contact whenever possible.
Provides privacy.
Adjusts bed to lowest position. Locks bed wheels. Assists resident to sitting position with feet flat on floor.
Puts on non-skid shoes. Places the belt over the resident’s clothing and around the waist. Does not put it over bare skin.
Tightens the buckle until it is snug. Leaves enough room to insert flat fingers under the belt. Checks to make sure that skin is not caught under the belt.
Positions the buckle off-center in the front or back.
