It was the last game in Finnish National Hockey team for several veterans, and the team wanted to play and win for them, for Teemu Selänne especially who is retiring altogether from hockey after this season. I think what Finland did in these Olympics was remarkable, two key players, Mikko Koivu and Valtteri Filppula couldnt join the team cause they were injured and another great player, Barkov injured during the games as well. Many people predicted that Finland wouldnt get nothing, but those guys played with full hearth and Selänne is such a motivator and person, propably the greatest Finnish hockey player ever, that everyone looks up to, that it made the whole team motivated to give their best.
Finland didnt have the greatest individuals and that's why we lost to Sweden and Canada, but Finland had the will and full motivation to get that bronze. Also much thanks goes to Tuukka Rask who is without a doubt one of the best goalkeepers in the world, his absence in semifinals might have costed the place in the gold game, but on the other hand Sweden took more penalties and our players just couldnt use those chances, just like US couldnt use their chances against Finland.

and it also helped that team USA didn't care about the bronze medal their hearts were already crushed after losing to team Canada and they just couldn't recover. Taking nothing away from finland but I was so disappointed that the usa team didn't even give them a good game. At first I was so embarrassed to call myself a hockey fan from the usa because we showed no heart or desire at all after the loss to Canada is was just sad. They may have been better than those players in 1980 that won the gold and beat the soviets but we americans will never see a team so driven by heart and passion for their country as those college players did but still congrats to team finland

Teemu Selanne. That is how you get a team motivated.

He is a huge part of the morale in that team and he lead the way on the ice too. Jagr has the same gravitas but the Finns are just so much more professional than most other teams and it showed against the US.

Blaming the loss on not being able to get motivated for the olympic brone game in hockey is dumb. Like someone below said already, that Finland had the exact same situation as the USA, in coming from a bad loss against their arch enemy, but its not even about that. The players are the olympic team of a country, and its the player's and coach's JOB to get motivated and do their best. And its not just any game, its the coming together of all the top teams of the whole globe to compete with their best athletes once every 4 years. When you take the excuses out of the equation, you're left with a simple "it wasn't good enough".

In Northern America, team Finland has always been underrated before the Olympics and it has always been a big surprise how our players play. I hope that the American and Canadian hockey writers now understand that hockey is taken very seriously here in Finland.

Kane the best player in the last game?!? BS! He was one of the biggest reasons USA lost. He missed both hes shootouts and he was sitting in the penalty box a whole lot, witch we took advantage of. And saying USA didn't want the bronze, that's just week... Every team plays to win, at least they should at this level...

    • @Balnazzardi
      @Balnazzardi 11 років тому +1

True, I dont think it was about if US wanted the bronze or not, it's just that Finland wanted it even more. I think that just like Russia (who also was beaten by Finland), US also had better individual skilled players than Finland...but hockey is team-game and Finland game to these Olympics with such motivation and full hearth to win that medal, even gold for Teemu Selänne and couple of other Finnish veterans who are going to retire from hockey. And also one thing that also made the difference I think is the fact that Finland's defense was great, and even more so was Tuukka Rask, who is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, without him Finland wouldnt have gone this far.
But overall I think what happened to USA, was kind of the same thing that happened to Finland against USA at Torino 2010 semifinals....USA got many goals in very short time and that demoralized Finland, thus US won 6-1...this time it seemed to go the other way around, although Finland didnt score quite as many goals in such short time, but those first 2 right back to back kinda had the same effect.
In the end it's comes to many small things, and I just think that sometimes, even a weaker team on paper can go far if they work as tightly together, have huge motivation and ofcourse great goalkeeper who keeps the team at the game like Tuukka Rask did and everyone in Finland's team really, really wanted to give the best result not only for themselves, but for the retiring players, especially Teemu Selänne who's love and passion for hockey and motivation effects everyone around him. This win was for Teemu =)

Playing as a team has always been Finlands strength. Back in 2011 when we won the world championship it was especially obvious against teams like Russia who's got very good individual players. I also think the fact that Finland gives the opportunity to young first timers plays a big part in our success the last couple of years. They are so eager to play big games with the veterans. (Mikael Granlund, Olli Määttä etc) The defense and Rask did play a big role in our games this year for sure.

The US team was beaten. So what? It doesn't mean they suck. They are talented. Look, in 1981 the Canadian team of Wayne Gretzky, Guy Lafleur, Mike Bossy, and company was pummeled by the Soviets 8-1, but no one would say that Canadian team sucked because of that one game in which they were blown out.

1972, 1976, 1980 it was always the team USA crushing our hopes for medal. Also in pro tournaments like Canada Cup 1991 and Vancouver 2010 for finals. So still fcking nuisance with the other big 3 :D

It can't go any easier than what I'll put out here
    1) Team USA had their momentum in the 1st period
    2) Team USA lost their momentum
    3) After 2nd, and at least after 3rd goal of Team Finland's, Team USA practically lost their motivation.
    Q: Why they lost it?
A: Bronze medal isn't just big enough prize, at least in some subconscious level, to motivate and build up the lost momentum again when your two or three goals behind. If this would have been the final, there is no way in earth that team USA would have lost their game completely after the 1st and the 2nd, or even after the 3rd goal of team Finland's. But, to be honest, team USA was decent team in the 1st period. It was one of the best sets in the history of olympics hockey bronze medal games.

It’s an easy road to go on as an analyst when your team loses to say they weren’t motivated. Chris Chelios was biting his lip. That rationale being that we are in control to win unless we choose not to. That’s not reality. You have to play sports for a long time to realize that. You can be as fired up and motivated as you want and that U.S. team probably was but they just lost to a better team. It just happens sometimes.

What a collapse by team USA. It's not like team USA has alot of medals in hockey compared to Canada and Russia. They should be happy to win any medal in hockey. They just gave up. They should have just packed their bags and gone home after they lost to Canada because they did not care about their sport or their country.

Sorry but what? Going for gold, no never mind. For example as long as I can remember each time that Finland and Usa have faced off in quarter finals of WHC Finland has won. USA may have the best hockey league in the world but no they aren't good when it comes to olympics and world hockey championships. That's the fact. It wasn't even a surprise that Finland won 5-0.

Finland is a very good hockey team and now 2022 I would guess better than never with all the NHL players.

There’s been one good bronze medal game in the NHL era. 2010 - Slovakia vs Sweden.
The rest were all garbage games, usually because one team didn’t care about winning the bronze medal. They should just cancel the game and of the two semifinal loser the bronze should be awarded to whoever had the better round-robin tournament.
