    I have come to the conclusion that restoration takes the patience of a saint. You really have to go slow and take your time and pay attention to the details. That door is looking great.

      I've had bad experiences with it in the past before I learned about thinning. You will enjoy how smooth and easy it is to apply when thinned! A 50/50 mix is a good place to start.

    It looks great but I think it will need a light sanding with high grit to take shine down and blend the little streaks that are visible to look more like other door

    • @1834RestorationHouse
      @1834RestorationHouse  2 роки тому

      There is a technique to light sand, clean, and apply a fresh coat of thin shellac for a more uniform finish. The best way to knock down the shine is with super fine steel wool. I hope to demonstrate this sometime.

    Would a Magnolia tree survive North Idaho weather and seasons? Mike, I like you new Carhart work pants. Everyone here in North Idaho wears them. As you know, it's rugged country here. The music reminds me of a Snoopy and Charlie Brown TV shows during the holidays😂😉

      I switched to Carhart when I went back to work. I've found that they are a lot more durable than denim! We love Idaho and have some great memories of time spent there. Speaking of Charlie Brown, you might enjoy this video.....It's the band which began as the Vince Guaraldi trio. When this was filmed, there was only one surviving member of the group left, and he is the drummer. Sadly he too passed away. ua-cam.com/video/Q-zXBHwEcC4/v-deo.html

    Your door came out looking just perfect! Jeanie is the Queen of painstakingly cleaning every speck of paint off of the wood so that it’s ready to be given it’s beautiful finish. And Mike is the King of meticulously mixing the shellac and applying that spectacular finish. Well done, you two!
    I love the look of the seed pods after they’ve dried. I have a bowl full of them on a bookcase shelf, sort of like a bowl of pine cones. I’ve never tried to do anything with them. I bet they’d make an interesting looking fall wreath with the color and all that texture against a big bow of fall colors. Hmmm… Anyway, I love your idea to share your magnificent tree with your viewers. So sweet to give a little piece of your old Victorian this way. 💕

    And good on you, Mike, getting three coats of shellac on the door and none of it on your pants! ;) I'm glad you have made a point about avoiding a shiny finish. I've seen stained wood furniture and interior trim with high-gloss clear poly coatings. Not good. Recently I saw a Real Estate video for an unfurnished Victorian house. The woodwork, doors, and mantels looked great, but someone had refinished the entire wood floor with a high gloss coating. :0 It was so shiny I could hardly look at anything else. Very distracting, and it didn't look "right". I'm not sure what is on our original gum wood doors and mantels, but it has that matte patina, with just a bit of shine. Looks like you are aiming for the sweet spot.

    The door looks good, your brush strokes on the final product would show less of you did the last coats with a rag though, it will give a smoother finish. I’ve been bitten by using a brush before for that exact reason.

      Welcome to the channel! We used "Brown Mahogany" with a good squirt into the shellac. Unfortunately we didn't measure it, but I would recommend going heavy with it and putting fewer coats of shellac on the door. It starts getting shiny after a few coats. You could also knock down the shine with "000" steel wool. I hope to demonstrate this someday.

    Folks should know that those beautiful big, red magnolia seeds will grow a gorgeous tree but you have to be patient. It takes a few months before they sprout and then you may have to wait for as many as 15 years before they produce flowers. Also I understand that if the seeds dry out they will no longer be viable.
