    A general note:
    I have been involved in the 'Dog World' for over 30+ years, having bred Rottweilers and Belgian Malinois and have had my own Specialist Security Dog Services business in the past and although now retired from day to day duties I remain interested through my brother who still is very much involved in the training and assessing both working K9's and their handlers in the UK security world. I have also been involved in logistics and truck driving for 30 years and my hobbies are tropical fish keeping, motorcycles and cars.
    I still own a small pack of dogs with their quantity changing as the years roll on.

    In UK...red air line is called Emergency line...yellow is service line. Trailer brakes mean Trailer park brake and before coupling - uncoupling the trailer MAKE SURE TRACTOR PARK BRAKE MUST BE APPLIED.Combination of electrical connection may differ depending of the year manufacture of tractor- trailer units .The latest models have red air line, yellow air line ( old models had also a blue line for secondary brakes )and two electrical connectors, one for the lights and the other one for electronics which includes ABS and electrical signal for service brake .Whichever combination, minimum requirement, red and yellow air lines and one electrical connection for trailer lights. Some manufacturers use palm coupling connectors for air lines.

    I'm pleased you emphasize the importance of not connecting the red line until you have checked that the trailer brake is applied.
    Many people don't realize that this action if carried out in the wrong order is extremely dangerous. Why? Let me explain.
    You arrive at the trailer you intend to couple to and discover that it is parked facing down a slight slope. It is winter, early in the morning, 4am, still dark and the tractor unit is still cold. You reverse under the trailer and connect the fifth wheel to the pin. You use the adjustable suspension to lift the trailer up off the landing legs and carry out the tug test. It is raining, naturally, and you want to get this trailer connected and get back into your chilly cab out of the weather as soon as possible. You jump out of the cab but due to being in a hurry and being cold you leave the engine running to warm the unit up as soon as possible. You don't bother to check the trailer brake and connect your suzies. When you connect the red service line there is a slight hiss and nothing else because the trailer air-tanks are completely empty. The engine which you left running, now starts to build up the pressure in the trailer. Unfortunately in your hurry, you have also forgotten to apply the tractor unit parking brake so your combination is being held on the slope by the trailer brake only.
    The situation now is that the tractor unit parking brake is off, the trailer brake is off, and the only thing holding your vehicle on the slope is the lack of pressure in the trailer air-tanks. This pressure is rising...
    As soon as the pressure is sufficient to release the trailer brakes they release. The whole vehicle now starts to roll forward across the yard. By now you are off the catwalk and doing a quick check around the vehicle. You realize the problem and try to get into the cab to apply the parking brake. You manage to get the door open but unfortunately you slip off the step and fall onto the ground. The vehicle rolls over you. The result is very unpleasant.
    A variation on this is that you are split coupling and are between the rear of the cab and trailer front when the trailer brakes release. The trailer rolls forward and you get crushed in the gap...
    For those who think these are fantasy scenarios you should be aware that drivers have been killed in both ways. One guy died trying to run round the front of the unit to get to the door. He was crushed against a wall by the front of the cab. All of those killed were experienced drivers with several years experience.
    WHEN YOU FIND YOUR TRAILER ALWAYS CHECK THE TRAILER BRAKE BEFORE YOU EVEN REVERSE UNDER IT. Then you will never become one of these statistics...
    I work in a yard with around 80/90 tractor units. We have a 24hr operation and shunters move trailers constantly. 99% of the time the trailer brakes are on. Around twice in a month I will find one which has not had the brake applied.
    Since this is aimed at new drivers and I have around 10 years experience my advice is to couple in the same way every time, starting with the brake check. If someone speaks to you during your coupling process, stop, and don't start again until the conversation is over. Then start again at the beginning.
    Always stay safe.

      I live in Ireland, and 3 weeks ago, this happened, and the only difference between your scenario and what happened here was that it happened in May, at 3am. The driver was trying to get back into the cab, and ended up crushed between the door and the front of another trailer. Great advice.

    When you say emergency airline and emergency electrics, are these lines a back up incase the main lines fail ?

      Thats a big problem in the industry in UK, sometimes it can be a while before you have to implement things you may have learnt years ago and you will be expected to remember it all, the companies you may work for don't have the time to explain and or show you and you start to feel like a right idiot so are not prepared to ask.So hopefully what i do may help.

    • @Airtrooper719
      @Airtrooper719 8 років тому

      cerberusk9uk Definately helped a whole bunch, it's been a very steep learning curve with reversing properly though, felt like a right idiot in front of people at services/depot locations, but I can already feel myself improving on that, I'm guessing (hoping) every trucker has been there and done that when they began though. As even when I done the cone reversing exercises, even if I was fresh off my test, I don't think it would have made me any better in real life reversing scenarios....especially doing blind-sided...

    • @cerberusk9uk
      @cerberusk9uk  8 років тому +1

      Biggest advise I can offer, DON'T PANIC' every driver and I mean every Driver has been through it, some will take the P but most will even help you out, even if when blind siding ( the hardest thing anyway) you stop and get out and ask for help watching you back, Most drivers will give a helping hand. As you are not on your test take as many goes at it as you want, get out have a quick look behind you, ( TAKE YOUR KEYS OUT OF THE CAB FIRST THOUGH) GIVE YOURSELF AS MANY CHANCES AS YOU FEEL YOU NEED, BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY. Just try not to get Het up, we all do it, but getting angry only makes it worse.Glad I can help in someway.

      cerberusk9uk Thanks, yes I noticed that if I compose myself I tend to get into the spots smoother and easier. I've had a few days where I started flapping as there was so many people watching me muck up, and because of it, I would be frantically locking the wheel left to right, not really thinking about where I wanted to drive the axles. When I'm calm, I tend to put the correct amounts of lock on where needed, and at most, take 1-2 shunts to straighten her up nicely. I can feel myself getting the hang of it, slowly but surely, now onto my 3rd week as a truck driver and have no regrets but I still learn something new each day.

    The slide is so the lines don’t get over stretched. They can’t get tangled once they’re connected

  • @TylerHall594
    @TylerHall594 8 років тому +5

    Wow that's different. in US we only have 3 connections. The connections for the air lines and electrical ABS. The airlines connections are called glad hands and the lines can be put on backwards.

    I think you mean the sockets on the trailer, the plug is on the suzzies.

  • @HaydenPettit-dx8dv

    Hi
    I’m now learning LGV I understand the the trailer break needs to be on before the red airline is applied but once applied the break is released, what would happen if the truck and/or trailer started to move? Would you have to pull the red airline off to active the trailer spring break

    • @cerberusk9uk
      @cerberusk9uk  3 місяці тому +1

      Once the red airline has been applied it allows for the trailer brake button to be pushed OFF or pulled ON as this is an air operated system it is supplied from the air tanks on the trailer via valves that open and close to allow pressurised air from the trucks compressor to flow to and fro as and when is needed, filling up the air tanks, building pressure then operating the park brake.
      Some modern trailers automatically apply the park brake once the red airline has been removed/disengaged locking the brakes on, needing the pressurised air from the tanks to release the brakes, after engaging/putting the red air line on.
      So ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT THE TRAILER PARK BRAKE IS ON BEFORE PUTTING THE RED AIRLINE ON as this may release the trailer if it has a manual park brake system.
      ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY!!!

    • @cerberusk9uk
      @cerberusk9uk  3 місяці тому +1

      Also yes by removing the red airline it will apply the trailer brakes.

      Bit of advice if I may, don't rush, take your time, when reversing look more than you think you need, don't get angry with yourself, stop, start again, if it's going wrong stop, review the situation then start again. And never be afraid to ask other drivers for help. 😀

      Correct, if a little succinct. You would be surprised at how difficult it appears to a beginner and as such needs to be explained a little more expansively...be a very short video too!
