Such a beautiful film that has no sex, no violence, no drugs and no tech. But there's layers of caring love delivered through amazing Japanese comfort share food. I'm so pleased Netflix did an international release of this film. It's shows all of us how far we have drifted from the basics related to looking after one another.
I enjoyed this series immensely! The characters, the music, the food, the cinematography... Just like those girls were comforted by Kiyo's cooking, I found myself comforted by their stories. Hats off to Mr. Koreeda and the whole team!
Indeed! Nana Mori carried that show. That light atmosphere, full of care, joy, and warmth, Nana Mori brought all that as Kiyo. You can’t fake that. You can only act that out if you truly have a joyful and warm spirit like Kiyo’s character.
The best part for me was how the audio mix help you feel you are in the scene. It is very natural in a way that other people in the background continues their conversation and you hear them as well.
“One of the themes of the story is how Kiyo’s dishes inspire others to take action.” -Director Hirokazu Kore-eda Director-san truly understood the spirit of Makanai from its original manga. That’s how he was able to authentically translate the heart of the story into film.
What a beautiful story about the friendship of the two girls and the life/love in the house. Top notch team in every aspect of the film making. Director-san's commentaries really deepen my feelings and love about the characters. I wish there are more commentaries from Director-san on all the key scenes!!!!
I saw the series on Netflix last week. It was a great production, a wonderful cast and the main actresses and the rest were brilliant!! And it was beautifully directed with such sensitivity!! I was wondering how these young girls would fit in the world of Geisha and I Loved every minute of watching the Kyoto I know. THANK YOU FOR A GREAT SERIES 👏👏👏👍👍 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
I didn't know it was based on a manga, and even an anime now. I can't wait to read and watch those as well. I don't know if there is going to be a season 2, but it'd enjoy it if it were true

小津安二郎を思わせるアプローチだけど、ただ懐古的なわけではなく現代的な印影も上手く取り入れたミクスチャーな手触りがとても新鮮だった
新しいものと古いものを共存させるのは是枝監督がこだわってやってきたことだが、そのフィロソフィーが「舞妓さんのまかない」という原作のテーマと合致していて、どちらの良さも凝縮された作品になっていた
