Finnish composer Aarre Merikanto wrote some small piano pieces of great character throughout his composing career, though not at the height of his most pointedly Modernist period in the 1920s. Closer in time and style to the landscape of his famous Juha and the great orchestral works are the Six Pieces for Piano, Op. 20 from the late 1910s.
The nature mystic and shaman in Merikanto are most in evidence in his alter ego, "Pan", though this is admittedly a rather friendly version of its counterpart in Greek mythology. "Melody", "Improvisation" and the lightly tripping "Scherzo" have the impressionistic fragrance typical of the era, though not necessarily of Merikanto.
These piano pieces by Merikanto are delicate, calming, lush, mysterious, energetic, ... gems !

This is wonderful -well-crafted stuff. I saw DePreist's recordings of the 2nd and 4th violin concerti so I had to research this composer. So glad i did ! Not fearsomely dark and not falsch candy music for people who don't really live in this world.Fabulous real harmonic movement with usual textures.Good creative imagination !
Nice little gems worth to be known more. It's quite clear to me they owe inspiration to the young Debussy (who was "young" bw 15-25 years before Merikanto pieces had been written: in fact in 1919 Debussy had passed away just one year before ......). However I feel more than mere Debussy heritage: I hear lot of personality and advanced nuance solutions....

+olla-vogala I came across this work (and its score) in a search for more from Vaino Raitio and Ernest Pingoud (the latter being impossbile to find anything from). I can't find anything other than works from his father. He did live until 1958 though so I'm not sure about copyright and such.

Cgilbert my reply is DITTO on Comment 31 I also think that same thought on Aarre Merikaton plays very very Beautiful performance on this six piano piece so their for I agree 100 percent on Comment 31 Peace Love and understanding which I think by George I think I got it Mr Gilbert is just still a novice at least IAM trying to understand about classical music and thanks for everyone's help
