As your local neighbourhood sparklecat, I low-key revel in pissing off people who think it’s cringe. Im autistic so you’d think the amount of bright colors would be overwhelming but I find that it acts like a stim for me
I always preferred more natural colors for my characters, but I just started making a sparkledeer sona and I’m having so much fun with the design! It really is freeing to be able to abandon the logistics and just make something fun
As a once 12 year old angsty lump, i admit to being part of the backlash against sparkledogs. Mostly making fun of them on deviantart, but i think a lot it was run of the mill jealousy and fear of my own art getting made fun of. Not that it made it ok, but im glad to see people embrace it nowadays
Reminds me on how I commented how I'm both scene and furry and someone replied with "sparkledog". I kinda appreciated it even if my fursona's a furby d:
I remember commissioning Butch Hartman to draw my sparkle Dino (someone paid me to do it before the tracing stuff came out). My Dino was apparently to complex.
I was given to understand that artists didn't like sparkle dogs because they're a pain in the ## to draw. The placement of each sparkle needed to be just right while the character designs were inconveniently complex next to more "normal" Furry OCs, (if "normal" even applies to anything Furry), especially for less experienced artists. This is what I've heard, I might be wrong.
hey i’m an emo kid! this is a pretty good video :) altho it doesnt reeaaally matter, i do have some nitpicks: 1. emo wasn’t made popular for the first time in 2005. the emo with spikey side swept fringes that you remember was, iirc, the third wave of the emotional hardcore movement 2. i would personally define sparkledogs not only by their neon colours but by the complex and intricate patterns whether it be clusterfucks of leopard spots or rainbow stripes. idk i think saying its the neon colours alone is too broad a definition because as you said your fursona could be called a sparkledog by that definition. i also think its worth mentioning that often the colours really dont go together dont take this as hate i love to see people talking about old furry trends and emo/scene people! just felt like giving my 2 cents but again its not a pressing issue 🙏
I'm huge on JJBA, I read the manga when I can. I'm still in the middle of Steel Ball Run but it's so wordy that I can't read much more than a chapter a day. At the same time, when I read the manga I end up not watching much of the anime. Still haven't watched much of stone ocean despite reading the manga. So I kind of want to wait.
Thank you for sharing the basics of Sparkledogs for the new generation! I love the message at the end too, nothing wrong with being self-indulgent and being yourself! PS Your fursona reminds me more of a fairy than a Sparkledog. Look up Littlest Pet Shop fairies, they look similar to your character :) (This is supposed to be a compliment btw)
4:51 I follow an elder emo in TikTok and he’s from the early emo days and said that for quite the longest time emos were overwhelmingly closeted queer folk and that’s part of where the hate for them comes from Also emo is inherently GNC so there’s that too
You can see the influence of emo/scene culture and sparkle dogs in the art style of Hazbin Hotel and Hullva Boss. Which was likely no coincidence considering a lot of characters like Charlie and Alastor were created back when Vivzneepop was a teenager around this time period (late 2000s/early 2010s). You can even see on her UA-cam channel the main character of her Die Young music video is basically a sparkle dog. (To clarify; I’m not a fan of Hazbin or the Helluaverse myself, I watched the Hazbin Hotel pilot in 2019 and it didn’t really grab me like it did everyone else, but I find the evolution of Viv as an artist fascinating and I find some of the character designs charming in an early 2010s tumble mall goth nostalgia kinda way.)
6:14 quite a LOT of kids who “grew out” of emo actually joined DIFFERENT scenes! Quite a lot of lolitas are former emos as are quite a lot of goths and punks!
I never really cared what people think when it comes to doing art, rainbow and crazy colour combos and colourful animal designs with patterns and stuff always has and always will be my favourite thing to draw! Its why my wolfdog persona has a brown fur base with a rainbow tail, cyan claws, mint green paw pads, blue eyes and baby pink heart in her hair and a rainbow heart music note tattoo on her floppy ear. In my mind, there are no limits to creative possibility!
Emo started in the late 80s from a band known as the rites of spring (if u say the cure then ur wrong, the cure is goth). So emo DEFINITELY came before. Now scene on the other hand...
funny that at the time it was a word used as an insult to make fun of unnatural-looking animal characters and young artists who didn't know colour theory (my first online hate was for an emo wolf/mudkip oc lol). now the term's been adopted/reclaimed.
In Brazil the term "furry" is used in a malicious way to say that someone is a zoof* or that someone is weird, I wish cringe culture were dead in Brazil, Whenever someone draws an animal, or furry, people bully the artist.

Don't mislead people. It's not a species but just a design choise. There's no creator of this species, people just came up with a new word to define something that have common features
I think this design choice laid the ground work for original species. Many original species are very similar to sparkledogs. The only thing sparkledogs lack is lore, they have a community, design rules (even if the rules are more implied), and design guides which all original species have. It's not misleading, I just define them as being a "prototype original species". We can disagree, that's fine. But I feel like calling it misleading isn't the right word for this. This is a difference of definition and opinion not misinformation.
@@SerasThings idk but this video kinda called 99% of furry fandom characters an some kind of original species because turns out sparkledog can be "not even a dog" as you said. Just some animal with non natural colors. You can't just call random characters to be part of species only because this "species" have no lore or originality
@@wondaraptor How do you measure originality? Do you use a ruler or a scale? Many original species some might consider unoriginal, but I don't think we should be measuring validity on that. The original part of original species is being skewed, that people have to believe the species has to be unique. But original in the use of original species is suggesting "new species" not "unique species". Originality in the way you're using it is subjective. No one owns the species, no lore exists, whose to say this neon thing isn't actually a virus or something? 🤣 I just don't appreciate the accusatory treatment here? Like obviously this video is good intentioned? I show an appreciation for it, support it, and like it. I won't tell you what to believe but I don't think this argument is going anywhere. This is a difference of opinion and I'm hurting no one by suggesting it's a prototype original species.
@@SerasThings you kinda don't getting my point. The thing isn't how "original" the species is. The problem you calling random characters to be part of a "species" only because they have the same design choices. Design choices that is so common that now you can call 99% of fandom characters to be sparkle dogs when they aren't even close to origin of the meaning of this word yk
OK, I see your point now. But at one point sparkledogs weren't synonymous with the fandom. It was considered bad design or ugly by many to use unnatural colors. While it's normal now, it wasn't then, which is why the movement stood out so much. They're a prototype original species, just because the whole furry community adopted the design at some point doesn't change at one point this was new. I'm not saying anyone's species is an original species unless they identify that way. But this is kind of taking leaps in logic. What it sounds like you're saying, correct me if I'm misinterpreting here is: "If sparkledogs are original species and everyone borrows elements from sparkledogs then everyone is a sparkledog and an original species."
Actually, the egg came first ... You can go Google that ;) Edit: Also, I don't like sparkle dogs, because some are legit hard to look at I don't mean in a "uwu cringe" way, I mean in a "I can't handle bright lights/colours, probably because of Autism/sensory issues. And sparkle dogs are basically nothing but bright colours"
Depends how you define original species. I define original species as a made up creature with a community and sparkledogs are that. But many wouldn't count them. Either way they're important to cover as many original species are compared to them.
