tbh i really like sparkledogs. having "those" kinds of ocs (i.e. super-duper accessorized, detailed, and very colorful) feels like something everyone (or at least every artist) should get to experience, and i honestly find them pretty endearing and quite enjoyable regardless
Sparkle dogs are honestly awesome! They have a LOT of personality and are fun to make! The colors are A LOT but overall they are really fun too still see nowadays
Oh boy I was there when sparkledogs exploded on dA in the mid-late 00s, I remember loving them but also finding them cringe because it was during a time where it was socially acceptable to hate on emos and scenekids. It honestly was short lived, it felt more like a trend that quickly turned into a joke (there's some old comic about a sparkledog struggling to wear all their accessories because they lack opposable thumbs lol). I'm happy that they are still a thing and it's really neat to see them reimagined in a more 2020 art style. Most sparkledogs I remember seeing where all very balto-like because that was the popular style for furries and fursonas.
@@rainbowlizardman Never heard of it. Are you sure you don't mean Bolt, the other animated movie about a dog who thinks he has superpowers but he's actually just an actor?
@Most-sane-deltarune-fan Balto also has a sequel that came out in 2002, and a third in 2004. The dogs are very expressive. I wasn't in furry communities, or sparkle dogs, but I'm pretty sure they are talking about Balto, not Bolt. If you look up "mid to late 00's sparkle dogs deviant art", they are more realistically shaped than Bolt, and Balto does have realistic dogs (besides faces)
@Most-sane-deltarune-fan not saying there weren't more unrealistic sparkle dogs, but that this person was referring to the more "realistic" sparkledogs btw, the ones that were "Balto-like " (sorry for two replies lol)
i dont think sparkledogs should be hated on by some people. you draw what makes you happy not what people want. if you wanna draw bright colored animals GO AHEAD! HAVE FUN!! people shouldn’t discourage you to not draw eyestrain-y ocs. i honestly think sparkledogs are awesome its ok if people have different opinions just dont say rude things. (omg i wrote a whole paragraph and it kinda makes no sense ;w;)
Heyyy scene furry here! Please note that scene and scenecore are different. Scene is what existed in the 2000s and its derived from the emo subculture along with being music based (ie Attack Attack, ismfof etc) but do listen to other genres ofc. Scenecore is aesthetic wise and is derived from scene in like 2020(?). Its not music based but if anything, some hyperpop artists can be scenecore but idk. I have sparkledog esc ocs but refer to them as sparklefurbs as they are furbies for the most part (like the guy on my pfp, Zeek). Sparkledogs are (and sparklefurbs) are very colorful and fun but can be tricky drawing them more than once due to having many details so I don't go super overboard with these types of ocs. Amazing video tho!
About the cringe culture thing, back in like 2015? it was so huge they had pages on facebook and straight up bullied 10 year olds for not coloring bases properly cuz the kids didn't now how, which went on for like a year until they got bored. Tons of ppl reported the pages but only managed to take down the main one, it was really hurtful and horrible time :c I never got targeted myself but seeing random ppl ruin kids hopes and dreams by insulting them daily was so sad and horrible, so many posts about kids quitting art cuz of it.. I hope they come back to draw one day again. I actually have never seen any hate on sparkledogs tho, mostly just seen that happened with mlp characters cuz those edgy 14 year olds had nothing better to do -.- They are hated everywhere I know of and hope that this ends already it's legit cringe to call out cringe at this point
when it comes to cringe i remember people making their own animes usually magical girl ones and hating on bad art was getting extremely popular. i still remember one hate comment saying smth along the lines of "why bother making something that looks so shit when official anime already struggle to not look bad" i cant remember the exact phrasing but that comment really made me think how some people dont see any value in making something original if not perfect from the get go (just because of online hate and that was that). how they themselves must be really scared to show their fiction and thats all these hate comments were. it was fear. fear of being hated on. when you get older you realize it doesnt matter and you have your own values so these comments dont mean anything and just seem like misguided scared people afraid to show what they like.
Omg that lapfoxtrax music. I have a sparkle-cat-bat oc (my profile) though i noticed even though i love the whole sparkledog look, i don't ever fully go into drawing it but do get close of a style. (Im a sucker for natural bases as example, mainly brown and grey).
I've always loved Scene dogs/scene wolves. This is what I've known "sparkle dogs" as. And recently my scene kid has surfaced and-- here we are. With another oc in the pack
I don't get why people feel this need to shit on others for having fun. Sparkledogs are pretty fun to draw! I have a couple of ones myself (adopted off of Deviantart)
You: kids when designing characters use bright colours and accessories to make them stand out! Me: *uses black and white with no accessories for my oc* *sighs*
What a cool video!! >u< I think I might draw a really cute/cool rainbow time-travelling dragon tomorrow. Basically, you inspired me to draw something. Thanks!
tbh i love sparkledogs , they add that kind of early 2000 sour gummy worm vibe to the furry community and im here for it ( i rlly dont know how to describe it but yh)
I feel like its hard for me to make a sparkle dog, because i like allot of bright colors but i want them to look good together and not just thrown around (no hate to people who do so i love randomness too )
I was one of the few exceptions to the rule that kids often vomit colors on their characters. When I started taking my art hobby more seriously, it was during that time when it was "cool" and "trendy" to hate sparkledogs, so I was afraid to use anything other than gray, beige, auburn, etc., unless it wasn't a mammal. It didn't change the fact that wolf hatred on DeviantArt that arguably contributed to the real animals being villainized even more, and the already existing hatred for sphinx characters got me bullied relentlessly, often by grown adults of all people. I feel more comfortable drawing sparkle animals nowadays, but I still have to live with that trauma for the rest of my life. All of this over a drawing.
I've been rly wanting to make a sparkle dog for myself for a while now but here this it rly solidify my personal need to make one. And now here I am making my own sparkle dog
The talk of cringe culture reminds me of that one time some jerk on Mastodon said some old art I posted looked like it was made by a 12 year old(I mean, it _was_ made by a 12 or 13 year old), and then got mad when I wouldn't listen to their criticism(not constructive in the slightest) because I was already happy with how I had developed my art at that point I dont think I would consider myself a sparkledog since my art's colors, though high in contrast due to colorblindness, seem to go well together
Ah sparkledogs...how I used to create them. I honestly miss them a lot, though some of those sensibilities have leaked into my more modern designs. Like what I use as my artist avatar/vtuber model.
I just saw a video talking about how sparkledogs ruined the furry community, but i really don’t understand the problem with these types of furries. I think they are very unique and might actaully now be my favorite type of furry style.
