  • Blue Jays can begin breeding when they are a year old. Males compete with each other, making squeaky gate calls and other calls while bobbing up and down, as a female is perched very close by watching. An ariel chase may occur which is initiated by a female when she takes flight, causing the males to chase after her.

My family of jays live in a big tree next to my home. I put nuts out at 6:00 a.m. and they come at 7:00. If I oversleep they caw all morning until I get their peanuts. Once they are full and drink water, they hide during the middle of the day until about 5:00 p.m. then start cawing and hopping from branch to branch. I put out fresh water birdbaths during this oppressive heat every morning clean and fill with water. The birds drank 6 or 7 gulps. I put rocks, balls, plants, sticks, hanging plants. Their own Playground. The butterflies andbees and lizards enjoy the cool rims of clay and lounge there. I love making interesting areas for my blue Jay's.

It is nice to see that you do so much interesting and informative content about the common "ordinary" birds such as blue jays, robins, and chickadees. I live in N. I remember the Blue Jays attacking my cats when I was young. I hated them then but they disappeared for years and when they slowly came back I appreciated them more. In the mean time a lot more Cardinals came around. A lot of things disappeared for about 20 or 30 years and are coming back slowly such as frogs, lizards, snakes and Mimosa Trees. I think the Chlordane that was used in the 60s took a big toll on the wildlife. This was in Long Island, New York. Great video and thanks for making it.

I have a flock of around 40 Jays that over-winter at my house; they've been coming for 5 years now... since I became obsessed with birds, saw your videos, and began feeding them peanuts everyday! I don't have any Jays that hand feed, but they LOVE our game of me throwing whole peanuts out to them!
When breeding season starts, you definitely know it! My yard is soooo loud omg 😂😂. My neighbors probably hate me lol.
I'm actually a little depressed when spring comes and most disperse to their breeding grounds. It's so cool because if I'm out wondering in the woods somewhere, if one recognizes me it will come out and want a peanut! This tells me they're like crows in that they remember people. This does not happen for my husband because I tried it for an experiment.
Absolutely AMAZING videos of their nests and behaviors. I love your videos and have learned so much from you! Thank you for sharing and showing people how interesting and smart Blue Jays are. When I tell people how much I love my Blue Jays I always get a line about what "bullies" they are. Like they're birds competing for food; they don't have human intentions lol.

Eyes still tightly closed, but little bright yellow mouths with pink throats wide open! Now THAT is Spring to me! They have faith that mommy or daddy will show up with a worm or seeds to fill their tiny sweet tummy! How beautiful nature is!

There is a pair of Bluejays near my house but I put out a banquet for all kinds of critters every morning, usually on a cleaned-off portion of driveway. One day I came out to feed everyone and there on the driveway were the Bluejay mates - and no one else. I almost fell over from sheer delight! Never before have I ever seen such a sight. BTW, I've gotten several comments about "the crowd" I have at my place and been asked by a few people if I've ever gotten any of them to eat out of my hand. I tell them that I never would because I don't want them to be that comfortable around people.

I've noticed some fledglings that follow around some of the Starlings that come around my area. They come to our feeders at least a couple times a day. Also, we love the woodpeckers that frequent our yard & have grown an especially fond relationship with this Hairy Woodpecker that comes around, it's a female so we call her Harrietta. She's been coming around with her baby, just one Hairy fledgling. He is learning how to eat from the suet & it is the sweetest thing ever. She seems to come around more so, when my husband or I (or both of us) are near the feeders. It's like she trusts us & has the added protection of us being there. She is such a sweet girl.

I opened up my garage doors to check on my bird sanctuary and observed two small birds on my drive way. As a inched closer, I observed they were two blue jay chicks. One was walking and the other one was still. I inched closer to see if it was okay, when all of a sudden, one of the parents dive bombed me. So cool. All of the birds know me but when it comes to their offspring, they don't care that I feed them, they will protect their offspring at all costs. Within minutes, both blue jay chicks were walking into the bushy area of my mini-sanctuary.

I think Blue Jays and Steller's Jays are the same species. I believe they interbreed in cross-over areas. The stereotype of jays being bullies is unfortunate and wide spread. Many people, here on the East Coast think this about Blue Jays. The truth is, jays provide a great service to other local birds (and squirrels) by warning the neighborhood about predators and leading the charge to chase them away. I personally love Scrub Jays and Stellar's Jays. I always look forward to seeing them and hearing their calls when I am visiting the West Coast.

For a couple months we noticed a blue jay or jays visiting our back covered deck and wondered what was going on. Well we found their nest right under the deck, perched on a tiny rack that holds the handles of garden tools. They apparently were visiting our deck cabinet where we had a bag of white zip-ties and used some of them to add to the “natural “ nesting materials making the nest 🪹. How clever they are! I only worry about black rat snakes 🐍 coming for their eggs except for the fact that the rack that the nest is sitting atop also has a couple hack saws 🪚 and claw tools hanging from it’s hooks. More cleverness. I now have 3 bottles of the “safe “ Snake-away hose spray because last year I was traumatized when I heard THE loudest bird noises ever outside the back of our house and discovered that a large black rat snake had taken over an active bird nest. There were so many birds in that tree making a ruckus but to no avail he cleaned it out.

We loved watching this last night, thanks. We were trying to learn more about blue jays. Sadly this morning we lost our little scrub jay fledging we’d been helping out since Sunday. We noticed an injured baby in our yard 4 days ago so we were bringing him in at night to sleep in a box in the laundry room to avoid being eaten by the neighbor’s voracious cat who prowls our yard. We’d listen for the adults every morning and I’d get up at 5:30am to put him outside, and we’d make sure they were feeding him, etc. Yesterday we watched in horror as a crow tried to make off with him but the parents stopped it. This morning wasn’t so lucky, as we watched a giant raccoon carry him off in his mouth. It’s hard to listen to the adults squawking and flying around looking for him now. We think he fledged too early (he looked a bit younger than yours in this video) and fell from the nest during another disturbance last Saturday. We saw another fledging from the same nest 2 nights ago out front and all seemed well for him but then he disappeared yesterday, likely to another predator. My wife and I are devastated; we’d grown quite attached to our little guy. We realize it’s nature doing its thing but still hard to witness. Thanks for continuing to bring us joy through your wisdom and experiences. - David and Molly in CA, USA

This was entertaining and very informative. Thank you, just what I needed because.....
Yesterday a Jay couple decided to set up house in my front yard (bird) paradise. It is very small. from the house to the road only some twenty meters and about the same wide. There are hedges in different varieties, perfect for hiding while feeding or waiting to take a bath.
Jays are so elusive I was thrilled to see them cautiously bringing material to the ten feet tall blue spruce only four feet from my bay window. The cats sit in that window all the time but it didn't seem to bother them. The blond tailed squirrel that daily visits the spot was dived bombed though and ran for the hills.
I assume it is a mock nest or rather I hope so. The spot is my little out door sanctuary where I kick back to enjoy all my 'tenants' from early spring to late fall. The Jays would most likely chase me and every one else off their turf.

About 77 years ago, when I was in kindergarten, there was a bluejay nesting near the school. Our teacher would open the windows to let in fresh, spring air. That also let in Ike, the nickname of the jay. One day, she was writing on the blackboard (yes, real slate in those days) with her back turned to the class - AND to her desk.
She had 5, brand new Ticonderoga wooden pencils on her desk. During the war, pencils were hard to get. We all guarded our pencils right down to the stub. Ike lit on her desk, strutted around a bit, and took off carrying one of the new pencils - right out of the window.
When she turned around, she immediately noticed that a pencil was missing. We were accused of stealing it, and it took several minutes for the whole class to finally convince her that Ike was the culprit.
For the record, I hated lying down on that little rug for a nap, and never once did I let myself go to sleep. I didn’t want to miss ANYTHING.

Have a pair that nested in my grapefruit tree, about 3 meters out from the house & 3 meters up in the tree. Saw that one fledgling had crept out on the branch yesterday. Today, they all seem to have left! Plenty of jays in our area.

I’m watching this from Cochrane Alberta. We’ve had a pair of blue jays for years at our feeder. I’m just a new subscriber and I’m learning so much from you. Thank you for these wonderful videos. I was watching this w my house cat who ran from the room when the blue jays put the cat in video on notice. 💚

Blue Jays have always been my favorite bird. Since moving to North Carolina 10 years ago from Georgia, it is rare to see them here. Back in south Georgia they were everywhere.

We have a pair of blue jays that have nested on our garage door opener for 3 years now. We leave the back door to our garage open at all times so our dog can go in and out. The first time they nested there we were away on vacation so they thought it was a quiet place to build a nest. After we got home they would squawk at me when I was in the garage so I would have to walk out to the shed step into the shed and close the door behind me so they felt safe to fly into the garage.

I notice about two weeks ago a nest felt out of a pine tree probably due to a storm. So the other day I move it into a different area and was going to dispose of it and then I notice a Blue Jay came along and took parts of it and lo and behold all of it is gone now so it is being use by a Bluejay family as far as I know!! Thanks for the videos!!!

My bluejays squak and make those alarm calls like that every morning when I bring my mix of in-shell peanuts, peanuts out of shell, and black oil sunflower seeds 🤣 I like to think they are ringing the food alarm 🤣🤣

Male bird courting a female blue jay reminds me of the human courtship of a man taking out a woman for a meal as part of his courtship ritual.....that still often happens. Lovely video and love these birds....don't see them here in Sydney Australia.
