Here is for you people to think. You are fully vaccinated and now you need a travel insurance that covers for COVID. What chances you will end up in hospital with severe COVID?
Remember vaccination prevents you getting hospitalized from severe COVID. If you do get it, mostly your symptoms will be mild and you will be asked to be quarantined from home or to a facility instead of a hospital. So using that travel insurance for COVID is useless, only to those who are unvaccinated. It would have been necessary a year or two years ago when vaccines were still in development. And since majority of the population traveling to the Philippines are fully vaccinated, getting a COVID insurance is a waste of money

Very good information thank you. At 72 the covid insurance is around $200/ mo., visa $50 mo., covid tests $200 each time! I must be able to save some money as I never go backward to high a price! I've survived covid twice with no doctors or meds.
I have problem with 30 day visas need why not 6 to 12 mo. Also problem with having to leave country on a regular basis! Retirement in Philippines should be very relaxing not stressful!

Thanks grampa for the update. I am glad you verified what I and others are thinking that this is a money making venture.
I rest my case. This was like the quarantine scenario. They ( politicians} lost the quarantine money making scheme . They had to
pronto start another cover requirement to replace the very lucrative hotel quarantine business. As far as I know , they Philippines
is the only one that is doing this travel requirement. It is good to have but it should be on a personal choice , not mandatory. I
have medical insurance to covers me internationally as an emergency. I pay and my insurance will reimburse me . I've done it
before.Philippine experience ; I was bitten by unvaccinated dog. I paid for the bill and the insurance took care of it.Go figure.
Our U.S insurance do not put a ceiling due to the uncertainty of medical care price tags @ different countries. This is consistent
of all of the insured U.S. passengers that come from the U.S.

Hi Grandpa, I just called PAL. I would suggest giving them a call. You have to specify the duration of your stay in the Philippines. Apparently, travel insurance only apply if you are staying for 30 days or less. We are staying for 6 months and we’re told we don’t need it since we are staying for more than 30 days. This is under the balikbayan program. Call Philippine Airlines customer service. Salamat po.

I wonder how much percentage ang binibigay ng mga Hotel under the table sa mga buaya! Now wala na ngang quarantine pag vaccinated ka pero travel insurance naman! At umabuso naman ang high price ng plane ticket! Ano ang used ng travel insurance kung mag bayad ka muna ng cash sa hosp/ or E.R. before you get a treatment!

From las vegas to LA to tokyo to manila then to butuan. had to sleep overnight in airport at manila i got there so late and i hade to book myself another plane ticket Going butuan immigration was very smooth i had everything labeled and organize whatever they ask for. and all they asked was just for my one health pass and my vaccination card and passport everything else they didn't really seem to care. I have respect for others and my wife and daughter here so i'm going to stay in hotel for quarantine for five days to make sure i'm ok then i can go wherever i want and try to figure out on booking in extension or try to figure out what i need to do to stay here with my wife and daughter for good i love your channel please keep up the good work and thanks again i appreciate it sir. 😊🙏

Making a follow up comment here about my travel insurance experience.
I checked in on my SFO to Manila flight two days ago with two letters in-hand from Kaiser, specifically stating that I am covered for any hospital emergencies (including Covid) overseas.
Initially, the PAL agent would not accept it! She went to another more experienced colleague to reconfirm, and that agent said the same thing; that they need to see in writing the coverage amount being greater than $35,000.
I explained to them that my health insurance carrier would not put that specific detail in writing.
I begged and pleaded; I even offered to open up my Philippine bank account app on my phone, and show them that I had enough money there to cover my medical expenses.
My pathetic begging must have been too much for them to bear (lol) , because after a little bit more back-and-forth, finally the lead agent just ended up letting it go. She approved my documentation.
I think because of so many additional passengers waiting behind me to check in , it was a pragmatic decision to “unclog” the process in that moment .
I cannot vouch that others will get the same result, however.
So I made it to Manila. but still, it could’ve easily gone the other way.
It’s such a wasted energy by the government to insist on this level of scrutiny.

Hi Grandpa, good vlog again. I personally feel that the insurance requirement is not a scam. I just think that it is another example of the lack of joined up thinking that I have experienced a few times in various aspects of Philippine life.
I guess that they see insurance is a requirement in other countries like Thailand, so think that they should do the same without fully considering how it would work.
I think that the Sri Lankan method of paying a fixed premium to cover any Covid treatment, would be easiest to implement, and would be more acceptable.

Hello Sir, What i think ,,, , my opinion on the Insurance ,, this is an Amendment to Executive Order 408, S. 1960 ,,,,,, fully vaccinated citizens of countries entitled to stay "( visa-free )"for not more than 30 days under Executive Order 408, S. 1960. 30 days is the duration of the stay ,,, because they require a RETURN / FORWARD ticket to LEAVE the country ,,, once you file for a visa " ( extention ) " the rules go back to the "original " Order 408 s ,,,,,, that doesn`t require insurance , this is just my opinion and have no documents to back it up , but it makes sense because they can not keep track of everyone with or without insurance ,,,,,,,,,,,,, Love the Videos , keep up the great work you help a lot of people

Hi Gandpa great blog I paid here in Australia $1500 for 3 months for my wife 69 and myself 81, my age now is becoming a big problem.I agree you need the cash up front to enter and leave a hospital in the Philippines. One other thing to remember is if Smart traveller has a flag up on the Philippines warning about travelling to the country, then this will make your policy null -in- void.Check the small print and the policy will say that, and mention Smart-traveller in the comments and conditions. My policy as of now is not worth the paper it written on because of that clause, all I needed was the certificate to enter which I have but as I said cost me $1500 donation to the insurance company.

Hello Blogger Grandpa! Good day to you sir. I agree with you that the required travel insurance has more to do to add to the airlines' bottom line. However , the IATF should also know to ask itself why there is such an imposition since in a Philippine hospital (or at a Dr.'s clinic as well) nobody asks for an insurance card when admitted. Also, you can only be acknowledged if and when you pay an admission fee. I know this because it had happened to a family member. The family had to come out with cash before she was admitted. The family also had to pay cash after her stay. So there you, What on earth is Covid travel insurance good for when you have to shell out cash instead. What d1mw1t will admit to this folly!

July and August is normally peak season so the prices of airfare is usually higher than off peak season airfare prices. Peak Season is usually June, July, August, and December. The first three is summer season when students are off from school so families can go on vacation. December is high peak season because Filipinos love going back home for the Christmas Season.

He arrived last night (Phil time) The travel insurance was not check. Only the vax card & covid test. He advised who are traveling to print the QR code as they only make a pics or scan for it. Hello Grandpa, there is certainly something fishy with the requirement of travel insurance by the IATF. I don't know of any other country that mandate that other than Philippines, usually travel insurance is recommended not mandated, when there is a mandate usually there is a lobby, a company or an individual that get benefits from it. That is the same case as car insurance. In my state car insurance was an option for the driver until insurance companies lobby with the state representatives and made it obligatory. I hope house insurance never go that way because I paid house insurance for 20 years, required by the mortgage company, by a total of $25,000 and next month I will pay off and own my home and I decide if keeping paying or not and what I will insurance or not.
Going back to the travel insurance by the IATF, I think you are right Philippines Airlines smell fishy about it. We will never know for sure, the only way to know the true is offering the members of the IATF a reward of 3 million pesos to the one that step up and tell the true. LOL, but I don't have that money to throw away.
At the end of the day the must affected by that rule will be the small business in Philippines the Tourism business, travel agencies and airlines, all for somebody that want to takes advantage of it.

The additional problem I have with the travel insurance requirement is that very few insurance companies offer insurance for those 75 and older. We were planning on staying in the Philippines for 3 months. The rates quoted for me alone were about $750! Now we are just waiting, hoping that the travel insurance requirements will soon be dropped. What is most irritating is that I have unlimited medical insurance through BCBS, but the BCBS insurance letter received does not state the magical words, "$35,000."

Someone or some entity is making profit out of this travel insurance requirement. It is like the car rental industry, CDW and PAI coverage when you rent a car. CDW and PAI coverage is not required if you already have a car insurance or if your card, i.e. Visa, MC covers any damage on the car rental, but since the car rental company is getting a bigger chunk of the insurance premium, plus an incentive for the car rental agent, it is being recommended as a must. If you decline, you are sort of warned that if anything happens to the car under your care, whatever damage, you will pay for it, before you leave the rental counter. Ooooops! For those who do not want to be inconvenienced will opt for the insurance coverage, of course.

Does sound like a scam. First time I checked on travel insurance it was $40 for 30 days. Same company now charges $120 for same policy.
But some of your subscribers are correct. This needs to be pointed out to the Philippine government. Regardless what kind of insurance you have, it’s worthless. Hospitals do not accept any insurance. It’s all cash. That makes it pointless to have travel insurance. This is a requirement that absolutely needs dropped.

yes I been checking out rates, and becos I am 62 it is $145 for 1 month (28 days) thru 1 of the nomad recommended insurance companies....I did find 1 as low as $28 per month. Hope by the time I'm ready to go retire there, this will be gone! I haven't had or needed health insurance since the mid 1980's
Yes read many times, the private insurance is useless, since Phil hospitals charge you CASH up front, and after your treated

Travel insurance is to ensure that in case u get sick of whatever illness u get the philippine government will not shoulder your cost of hospitalization. Same if I go anywhere in the world if I tour I get a travel insurance as a supplement to what medical insurance I have in the USA. If I need to be airlifted that insurance will cover it as well if there will be any disruptions in my travel that travel insurance also covers it

Grandpa, I am going to blow you mind on this. I am military retired, thus I am covered by Tricare “world wide.” According to the United States Defense Health Department any military active duty or retired individual is cover by a
$100,000.00 dollar coverage both while traveling to and when you arrive as and example while in the Philippines!! I was told by the Department of Defense Health Division to talk to the asian Pacific region in Okinawa about this hundred thousand dollar health insurance. In doing so I was told by the Okinawa representative of Tricare that’s the only nation that didn’t except this $100,000 insurance plan for both retired and active duty military is the Philippines. Their advice was do not take a chance and not have flight insurance.

Thanks for the video. Very helpful and detailed. The way I understand it, you need an outward ticket, which should probably be within 28 days to match the Visa On Arrival. This, in turn, would allow for only 30 days of travel insurance coverage. A very small concern would be when going to the Philippine Immigration for your visa extension that they would ask for proof of Covid travel insurance, which is highly unlikely.

From what I've gathered, it is a general policy among USA-based insurance carriers (especially the major ones) to not issue a specific certification regarding their respective worldwide emergency/urgent care coverage. They pretty much are inclusive of all health/medical conditions or situations including the current bug (the same specification as within local US territories) and has better coverage than that of the PH requirement (mine specifically is way beyond 35k USD and up to several months of coverage each time). Therefore a health insurance ID card together with the corresponding Evidence Of Coverage document should be more than good enough if PH is really serious about this particular requirement. That being said, such requirement is a moot point anyway since "Cash" is still the name of the game in PH, most especially for medical/health services as many have indicated.
Perhaps the reason why they're not checking travel insurance upon arrival is because they know that airlines strictly enforce it already and not allow anyone to depart without it.

    • @vloggergrandpa2707

Here's the most practical thing to do if you are going to the Philippines for pleasure from the United States: (1) have plenty of money in your U.S. bank account (2) bring the maximum cash you could UNLESS is has changed, that's $9K because if you happen to get hospitalized here they will want your cash deposit BEFORE they will treat you despite the fact that Duterte during the beginning of his Presidential term had directive to hospitals to treat people by NOT ASKING FOR CASH FIRST - - - guess what - - - hospitals are not following honoring that directive AND the government is not doing anything about it. So, in the final analysis, this government requirement to get a covid travel insurance is simply "Palpak." Gaya ng maraming kapalpakan na nangyayari dito because of the pandemic.

Plastic is not acceptable in any health care facilities. Cash is the king in the Philippines. The money wasted in insurance from other country could help the Philippines economy if cash is required instead of Plastic.

Upon checking in, PAL ask for the following; passport... it's a given.
    PAL:
a.) Proof of Travel insurance of my foreign spouse. Minimum $35k including covid
b.) Return ticket- luckily, I am a dual citizen so we didn't have to provide it
    c.) Married cert
    d.) Dual citizenship cert
e.) Asked if we registered through One Health Pass, I said yes and we were given a form to sign.
    BOQ:
    a.) Passport
    b.) One Health Pass Proof
(Scanned QR from my cell phone, so make sure to screenshot the QR code after registering.
    c.) Boarding pass
    Immigration;
    a.) Passport
b.) Arrival form- given by the airline staff
    c.) DUAL CITIZENSHIP CERT
Everything went smoothly, I arrived at around 10pm so it wasn't so busy at all.
    Thanks 😊 😊

Do not include travel delays, flight re imbursement and others. For a 50 years old and younger with one month stay , it cost between $25-$30.

A thought just came to me grandpa. Does the airline/airport personnel check the validity/authenticity of the travel insurance paper of every traveler? Do they get on the phone/ computer and check? If not, then it’s easy for us to initially purchase travel insurance, print out the proof of coverage. Then a few minutes later cancel your coverage , stating you made a mistake. Just saying!

Here is a simple solution for Balikbayans. If you qualify for Balikbayan, that means you qualify to become a dual citizen. The processing fee is $50. You submit your papers at the consulate in the morning and then you take the oath in the afternoon. In going home to PHL, no need to worry about the 35K covid health insurance, no need to worry about return ticket, you can stay for more than a year (or as long as you like), and enjoy all the privileges accorded to an ordinary Filipino citizen. All that for $50.
