Steyr GB was the first centerfire semi-auto pistol I ever fired as a young teen in the 80s. Dad and I went to an event at the Black Canyon (now Ben Avery) range in AZ and Steyr had a booth where they were letting people test fire the GB. I never have owned one, but that pistol will always have a special place in my heart.

I'm also a collector of gas delayed pistols, lovely to see this Ian. The ADP was not available in 45 ACP but rather a shorter GAP like 45 ADP. Only a few were made by Alex as prototypes. Skip the CPP my friend, parts #44 and #46 are made of polymer that's the wrong spec for what it does. After a random number of rounds, Part #44 destroys and or fuses with part #46 causing a complete failure of the striker mechanism. Meaning that you can throw the pistol at your target, but nothing you can do to the gun without rebuilding it will make it fire.
And it's a real shame too because the ergonomics are fantastic, it's light and easy to carry, its incredibly accurate, and the recoil mitigation really does work. It has all the gas delayed pistol issues with overheating and needing frequent cleaning, and it only holds 8 rounds of 9mm but even with those shortcomings I would have loved it if the gun was reliable enough to keep.

The system can most easily explained by comparing it to a game of pull robe. A simple blow back would be a strong guy pulling on a robe tied around a rock. The goal is to prevent the strong guy (blow back) to pull this rock (the slide) a certain distance in a given time before he runs out of stamina (gas pressure). To ensure this usually the stone (slide) have to made very heavy. But if you get another guy (pressure acing on the piston) bulling the robe in the opposite direction the strong guy (blow back) has to overcome this resistance to and you cold make the stone (slide) lighter. The gas pressure in the pistol that tries to push the case out again the slide (blow back) has to overcome the slide mass and the counter acting pressure.
But one thing that is often overlooked is, that the slide must move from the get got if it does not following will happen. Give that our strong guy (blow back) is prevented from doing any movement on his robe, because the other guy is as strong as him. He will get tired (bullet leaves the barrel) before he could affect any movement and then leaves together with the other guy (because if the bullet lefts the barrel and the pressure drops in both systems. The blow back force will end to act and the "delaying" force in the piston will and to act at almost the same time. )
This can be observed in high speed footage the slide does not gain extra speed as soon as the bullet leaves the barrel, because the "delaying" forces drop as well as the acting forces.

5:08 If one would design the P7 the way, that the slide could be kept shut by gas pressure (easily obtainable by enlarging the pistons diameter over the caliber of the bullet) one would encounter the problem that the slide would not move the moment the bullet left the barrel, because as soon as this happened there would be no force left to cycle the slide. Recoil force ends as soon as the bullet leaves and if gas pressure drops ind drops in the barrel and in the cylinder. The initial movement of the slide must be there for such a weapon to cycle.

One quirk with the Steyr system I can think of is that the slide will start reciprocating from the blowback of the cartride and then go forward again as soon as the bullet reaches the gas ports and fills the gas cilinder, causing a bit of a jerking movement back and forth. It's probably very minimal, maybe imperceptible, but if the designers decided to add weight to the slide to counteract that, then it's not neglegible

Please do expand on this. I love mechanical quirks.

  • @fortnitetier6927
    @fortnitetier6927 9 місяців тому +2

Its fairly easy. The P7 got an acting piston of 9 mm diameter (the case that is pushed against the slide) and a counter piston of 7 mm (the tapped gas) These pistons work against each other. 9 minus 7 is 2. Therefore the slide will open with the force of a 2 mm piston.

    • @seth094978
      @seth094978 9 місяців тому +2

Not quite. You need to subtract piston areas, not diameters.
      π(9/2)^2=63.6
      π(7/2)^2=38.5
      63.6-38.5=25.1
      25.1/π=8.0
      √8=2.8
So it opens with the force of a 2.8mm cartridge, assuming the pressure is the same at the bolt face and at the piston face, which it won't be, so it will actually open faster. In fact, the gas port diameter may have a larger effect on opening speed than the piston diameter!

Chinese adopted it on the Type 79. There's also the SiG MPX. There were more guns, some being derivative from the AK in Serbia, but I don't remember all of it. As you can tell, it's both lighter and shooting faster. On the MPX, it's said to be recoil level of a MP5, while on the Type 79 Chinese video, they say the recoil was kinda uncontrollable, even with a recoil pad, but since the Type 79 doesn't have a handy handguard, it doesn't count IMO

As someone in a country where guns are scarce and I have no hands on experience with them, there is a lot of value to me in these kinds of videos as opposed to ones where you just look at a single gun in more of a vacuum.
I would especially enjoy more videos where you make comparisons between cartridges, even the mainstream ones since I - again as someone who has no access to guns - have little experience with them and it's hard to really get a feel for what the difference actually is between them and what makes a good pistol cartridge as opposed to a good rifle cartridge etc etc, things like that.

Finally a good explanation of gas-delayed blowback systems on youtube.
The brass casing also acts as a piston moving the slide back, whereas the area of the counteracting piston is smaller which thus results in a lower force (assuming equal gas pressure) pushing the slide closed. So the backwards force is higher than the forwards force yielding only a reduced net force backwards accelerating the slide back.
Aside from that, even though the gas bores in the barrel are very close to the bullet, it takes time to flood the counteracting piston volume to build up sufficient pressure for slow down the slide.

The alien seems to have an advantage that the hot cylinder is at the top and not going to rapidly heat up the dust cover of the frame and potentially burn the shooters fingers like the HK is notorious for. In 1990 or 1991, I had the opportunity to thoroughly test a gas delayed conversion for the 1911 Govt in .45 ACP. The principle was very similar to the HK P7 (my duty weapon in those days was a HK P7M13. Awfully expensive but it was a time when French police officers in specialized units could get an authorization to buy and use their own gun as long as it fed 9x19 or .38 Special … and they’d just recently replaced the MR73 with the French made version of the Ruger security six renamed RMR). Long story short, that conversion unit was 3 pieces: a barrel and gas cylinder block with quite tight machining tolerances so that it would fit tight, nice and cosy in the Govt frame; a different recoil spring and, if memory serves me well, the piston that replaced the usual guide rod. I think the bushing had something special too. I couldn’t find any trace of it in the imperfect memory of humankind called the Internet. Would someone know about it?
P.s. the thing was working quite well as long as you’d use potent ammo. Still, it was a pita to clean and the buildup would start creating problems after 2-3 magazines. Too bad I didn’t keep pictures…

My mom picked up a ccp m2 on a trade. I didnt know anything about them, but found they are ideal for anyone with lower hand strength. The delay system also allows for a lighter recoil spring, making the slide very easy to rack. Its a very under talked about gun imo.

@@paulwiggins183 problem with the trigger is more than it having a long pull, people who have review it have said that it is like pieces of glass or sand rubbing against each others, and not a very well defined wall either if I remember correctly. It is just a waste to not put your best trigger (like the one in Walther PDP for example) in a gun that has a noble action which lends itself well to accuracy (the non moving barrel). I didn't know about the plus p thing, even though plus p ammo for 9mm is a bit of a gimmick, there is still not a real excuse for a manufacturer in 2023 to make something incapable of handling it, that being said, what generation was yours? Because they did some fixes a few years back and they might have included the ammo intolerance flaw.

The trigger guard is a bit wider than the trigger so if you finger slips off it will go past the trigger, when its fully pulled the trigger is blocked completely by the trigger guard, so if your finger slips loading it, it wont be fully loaded. And if its loaded already, you arent using the trigger guard.

I beg to disagree with Ian. I think that Steyr GB is the best of them-at least technically. And my reasons are:
1/ The gas piston is the barrel itself and the gas cylindre is an easily accessible part. It’s _far_ easier to clean these components-and that matters immensely.
2/ The pistol has *very* reduced number of components; indeed, there are just a handful of them. E.g. the sear, disconnector and ejector are all one piece multi-purpose component. No single spring has only one purpose (except the firing pin spring). Ingenious engineering.
3/ The gas cylindre (the area that heats up) is substantially further away from the hand than in all the rest of them. And
4/ 18 rounds in the double-feed magazine… You don’t even need extended size of the grip. And yet, the pistol isn’t any wider than usual (there are many thicker pistols) because the frame is made of pressed and welded sheet metal. So inventive!

I never was a guns enthusiast, but as an engineer you got me interested in different mechanics of the firearms. Firearms is one of a few systems that are completely mechanical, and relatively simple, but slightest changes in design might significantly affect reliability, price and weight. They looks so simple, but it takes years to make design reliable and effective

Might the Steyr GB get less hot, less quickly, by not letting hot gas into the cylinder until it's actually needed? The others reportedly all do get hot, about the Steyr I do not know, but it's an army service pistol with a big magazine, the others are mostly backups, and the Steyr's working parts are also quite big, which might also be a temperature-control thing.

That was an amazing Tour de Force for the Gas delayed handguns. I love this video, I have compiled a list of Gas delayed handgun videos for my own research and Ian bring this out to add to my research archive. the only ones that I has not touched upon are the Vector CP-1 (from South Aftrica) which may or may not be available in the US and the Bulgarian Arsenal Corp. Arsenal P-M02 (from Russia). I would love to see a cool in depth Video of the Arsenal P-M02 but alas Russia. It looks like basically a Gas Delayed Makarov in 9x19. Oh well we can dream. Are you going to make a Stand Alone video about the Heritage? It would be interesting to know the history of the company and its roots. Chiappa also experimented with gas delay in a similar manner to the Steyr GB called the 'DBB45'. That would definitely be a unique Forgotten Weapon to take a look at, specifically the "Whys"

The explanation makes it sounds more complicated than it is. Really, simple blowback is gas-operated already. Using the cartridge case as the gas piston. Now we are adding another smaller gas piston to oppose some of the original piston's thrust. It doesn't delay the opening as such, it makes it act as if it is firing from a smaller diameter case. As in, the slide opens as one would expect for a simple blowback with a case base area equal to the difference in the piston sizes (except the Steyr GB because of its late introduction of gas pressure)

This is so informative to watch. Would love to see a slow motion of the Steyr GB firing and cycling to see if the placement of the ports has any significant changes in when the slide comes back/is delayed by the gas holding it up.

Is there any pistol this size that manages to squeeze such a long barrel into the frame? Look how far back the chamber is compared to other handguns. It's impressive how HK designed that strikerfire mechanism ao compact. Regardless, thanks for the content!
