I adore pigeons, they're so adorable and misunderstood. I'm always interacting with the city pigeons, getting wire off of their feet and taking in injured pigeons. We should respect pigeons, as they've served us for a very long time, as food, as weapons, as companions, and they never had any choice in that. Just another animal we've abused and yet here they stand, stronger than ever, such a remarkable bird.

Fishyfishyfishy500 AKA BS nooooo! Fruits shouldn't be fed to pigeons or doves! They can't digest it because their ceceum is practically non-existent. They need to eat seeds. When feeding pigeons in the park give them seeds like millet, corn, barley, and peas.

I knew that Skinner was a very cold and detached sort of man, but developing a deadly weapon of war using kamikaze pigeons is just several layers of cruelty layered over one another.
I saved one pigeon and then I bought a female pigeon for him so that they could live happily ever after, but after a few weeks they brought another pigeon, then another --- and next we had a big cage built for 50 white pigeons on the roof. We would decorate them with colourful rings in their legs, so that when they walk, it makes sound. We would use bright colour underneath their wings so that when they fly high, we could spot them.... Oh, I miss my pigeons 😭 they were so cute, funny and sexual amongst themselves 😭

Apparently pigeons are also much better than humans at detecting survivors and debris in the ocean. Now that's a project I'd love to see revived.

Using pigeons for missile guidance would be a terrible idea considering how completely decimated the carrier pigeon population was after the two world wars. Not to mention that just getting the pigeon into the missile at the right time would be tedious and time consuming.

that is alot of systems just for finding your way home. why would any animal evolve this many adaptations?
They might also use those systems to hunt and maybe where that first evolved, separation was common and knowing your surroundings was necessary to return home and survive
Before they were domesticated they lived on the jagged cliffs of the Mediterranean coast and Europe. Not being fish eaters they had to fly great distances to find enough food to survive and raise babies. They would have had to develop those ways to find their nest again
