Cool test! We are big fans of the A2 for our Genesis. Thanks for the video!
Dear god..all of the 1095 is best people..all the Crovan people...all of the Ka-bar people
Bark River A2 for the win
Brutus liked this Steel. Caesar wasn’t sure. That’s why he asked, ‘A2 Brutus?’
Tony Canniffe Love the historical reference.
That was rather impressive. I own that knife and knew it would do well but I didn't expect it to do that well.
Blue Mountain Bushcraft and Outdoors yeah, was expecting maybe 20 more, not 80 more! Its great stuff
Thanks so much for your work with knife edge retention tests. Greatly appreciated, and a great base for comparison of steels and edge geometry.
Cheers!!
A2 is my favorite carbon steel.
I think this steel does even better at 60 without loosing too much toughness. Good stuff
I have LT Wright 'Forest Trail' & 'Next Gen' both in A2. VERY happy with performance from these knives. All usages, but, these blades REALLY shine when gutting (think hair) elk, deer & antelope. The belly curve of the Forest Trail is absolutely perfect when skinning. Haven't done any formal testing, but I think they're doing better than my Koster 'Bushmaster' in 3V and Randall 'Model 1' in O1.
Wich grind is on your Forrest trail? Scandi? Saber? Flat?
Randall keeps their O1 relatively soft from what I understand. You can watch Bushcraft Costa Rica's video on O1 edge retention, where he compares a Randall Model 1, a Dave Beck WSK, and an Origin Woodsman knife in a rope-cutting edge retention test. All three of these knives are high end (that Beck costs $1000 new), feature O1 steel, and all three have surprising results. I'd recommend watching the video but the short of it is, the Beck has substantially better edge retention than the Randall, and the Origin has substantially better edge retention than the Beck. The Origin's performance is absolutely insane compared to the other two. The Randall seems really more geared towards resharpenability than anything else.
Loved the video! Always neat to see how different steels perform; helps decide what type of steel is best for certain tasks.
Hey man, good video series! I know how much I want to be more detailed in my vids, but neither the resources to do a more scientific or solid edge test nor time permits. I have the Bravo 1 in 3V & S35VN. The 3V had been excellent. Haven't used the newer S35VN enough yet. Take care man.
AlphaBladeReviews 3V will be running the gauntles very very soon! A bit scared i'll run out of rope
CedricAda Gear and Outdoors
Lol, you just may! 3v is my fav steel overall considering all the main categories we check in steels at our current point in this ADDICTIVE knife world... Peace!
AlphaBladeReviews he man has the 35vn barkie chipped or anything? Have to bataned and put it through hard use yet?
AlphaBladeReviews haven't tried their 35vn yet
Wow dang ! I'm thinking of buying a GNS or Genesis in 01 but sheesh A2 is a huge difference and only a few bucks more.
holy shit! subbed! how easy is it to sharpen compared to 1095 or 0-1?
I've enjoyed the videos. Keep them coming.
I've seen people get convex knives (even thick Bravo 1's) that sharp - sharp enough to whittle paper hairs away from a page with ease. So just for my edification, are you suggesting that it's "simply easier to get a scandi that sharp" ? Or are you suggesting that convex blades cannot be sharpened to the same sharpness as scandis?
Thanks.
I have LT Genesis in A2 and it's perfect.
Hey man have ya checked out SteelWill knives? They have some wicked cool knives especially their new Roamer series coming out. There is some new videos from Shot Show 2017, they are rubberized grips full tang knives that come in at $60 or less, some really awesome stuff. Ontario has a new line coming out to with rubberized grips like the Fallkniven knives, also in a $50-$60 price range.....oops that's American dollars though.
Very nice. Can't wait for the Bark river.
Say Heah Cedric, I heard from a very relable source that They use Peter's Heat and Tempeting to temper their blades, Peter's is one of the best. I have a modifird Attitude that was also temoered by Peter's and it's in O1 but has a crazy scary sharp edge, and it hold great too. ,, .
great job
cant wait to see how bark river 3v will do
That is an insane result.
hey man, like your videos. I've been thinking whose A2 is best, LT Wright or Bark River? There are a lot of knives made in A2 steel in Bark River Knives, as you know.
You're saying the fact that it's scandi and can get sharper contributed to the amount it cut through, I'm wondering so if you took 01 or 1095 and it was the exact same grind as this one could they possibly do the same or more cuts? I'm trying to pick a steel to make some knives out of. These kids are cool btw👌
James Bradshaw A2 has more carbides for wear resistance and is tougher so it wont microchip away. This steel is better than the others as far as on paper, but i dont know if a side by side would reveal it
Question: what type of pins/rivers were on the knife? They looked like steel and brass, similar to the ones used on an old knife I have. It's a 1945 ABL jack knife, in the pattern of the old British Army knife. I really like the look and wanted to use them on a knife when I eventually try my hand at making some.
*rivets
SlickNick33 those are steel pins through brass eyelets, polished flush with the surface. Very nice!
bark river's most used steels are cpm3v and a2, in your test a2 did a better job at holding an edge... but cmp3v is superior to a2 in almost every way.
have you got a clue on how this is possible?
+Sem Dijkstra Grind, for sure. This ones seperately listed for that reason: the convex loses 'super sharpness' quicker than scandi, falling back to a decent working edge. Scandi kept on going and going until it was suddenly very dull. I wouldnt compare the A2 with anything more than the other two scandi knives I have tested. Ive got a 3V scandi coming this week so I'll test that and see how it goes
Carl Andrews up yeah it is
Better than 3v????
Dumb question probably but what's a scandi?
Just Tex oh thats not a silly question at all! Its the name of the edge bevel grind! see the large shiny silver edge - that whole thing is like a giant little edge on any other knife. Quite extreme angles make a very sharp edge
So does that mean the angle is closer to an axe then a kitchen knife or is it more to do with the size of the bevel.
Just Tex more to do with the size of the bevel. An axe will be a convex ground to the edge, a scandinavian (scandi) is still a big 'V' shape 👍🏻
Oh that makes sense , thanks for your help. Cheers
What whetstones do you use?
A bester 700, bester 1000 and King 4000. My trio are in my latesr mora bushcraft black video for a better look a few minutes in
What size rope are u useing
Jason Erickson it’s 10mm twisted sisal. (254mm in an inch)
Excellent stuff; thanks!
Love the music
Can we see a test in some wood maybe
Did not start out with knife very sharp at all
WTF I expected 50-70 WOW
Genial
Bark River HT is just amazing
Rough Rooster Knife Sharpening lol yes it is
More to knives than producing videos of rope cutting. Can we get a variety of use please. Do you ever use these tools for what the companies designed them for?
if you scrolled my channel before leaving a snide comment you would see rope cuts are just a small way I test knives. But go ahead, easier to criticize than create hey
hey...messaged you on youtube...I won the capsule in your 2000 sub contest...
Randy Yeager cool man send us your address to the messenger or to my email cedric.ada@gmail.com
sent my address in the youtube messenger...or at least sent you message on youtube...
just checking if you got my message...
Randy Yeager yeah man! all sent :)
Phuck me....that is a good result!
A2 is excellent stuff, to be sure
Your knife looked dull
well, it wasnt. it was rather sharp
Scandi Grinds shorten the life of a knife.
