  • The best of the good life is a home off the grid, out of cell range, in Matobo Hills and a vintage Model T Ford to get you there.
We’ve come a long way over The Limpopo, up here to Matobo Hills to see this and it’s worth every mile it took to get here.
This is the weekend escape of Beks and Sophia Ndlovu, near the World Heritage Site of Matobo Hills. It’s a brief drive from Bulawayo for Beks and his family. He founded and is the CEO of an adventure safaris operation in Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia. When he wants to get away from it all it’s here, to the land of his ancestors, that he comes.
They called the house Khayelitshe, Ndebele for “house in stone”, but one of the first features you notice is the auto-parts outdoor lounge suite - born of Beks’ fertile design mind. Designing and building their home from scratch, Beks conceived the blueprint in his head, a good while before the build. The wood and stone were far more than stylistic choices.
Colour brings textures and prints together out here on the veranda. Mixed in with Indian pieces, some features have been locally crafted in keeping with Beks’ desire to make the most of homegrown skill - from across the continent.
The Ndlovus see their feet as firmly rooted in African soil, but equally as citizens of the world. It shows in their mix of North, East, West and Southern African styles. Come three on a Friday afternoon its destination Matobo with no Wi-Fi or cell signal - just the family connecting with nature.
It’s first and foremost a family home to the Ndlovus and their nine, eight and five year old children.
It was a unique privilege being able to buy a two hundred and forty-hectare tract of land in this magical area and even if you find yourself with nothing but a rock to sit on - it’s a pretty impressive rock!

Lot of people are multilingual in Africa, it is a common competency. English is just another language. Just in English speaking countries they are a bit disabled in this department. Typical of monolinguals, they are always surprised when you can speak their language well. Unfortunately they influence others to be impressed with people speaking English as well.

Willard it’s easy to meet a white woman abroad and any white woman could say YES if they see something in you. Try that within Zimbabwean borders, it won’t work. No matter how rich or educated or handsome or sparkling personality one has. It won’t work. They are raised differently and behave as such in African countries.

great to see my fellow Zimbabwean. congrats. the presenter could have been better though, she was just asking questions and not commenting on his responses making it seem like she wasn't interested by what he had to say.

I miss that place. As a child i played amongst those rocks and camped the for a whole school holiday in 1986 with my best friend from Gifford High. His name was Thembalani Moyo. He was a brilliant guy. I had a book on precious stones and another on the Geology of metals. Themba's family lived on a farm about 20kms from this exact spot so , as i was allowed to spend my holiday with Themba, Matopos and the lake was the obvious choice to start our hunt for "treasure"! We found loads of interesting stuff from old graves to rock paintings in places that looked like no human had ever been there for thousands of years. We found some loads of bones as well. We found of rocks with all kinds of weird crystals inside of it. We found what turned out to be a Garnet (which made us start dreaming of diamonds). We found a smooth rock in the middle of nowhere in the mud by itself and it was made of metal.. Whilst the others were listening to Smiley Culture we were drawing maps of our "places of interest" and practising to be Geologists , prospectors and snake catchers. We were only 12 but we had big plans.
