    If DC has a problem with reprinting stuff because it's by someone convicted of a crime, they could do a Son of Sam rule where royalties go to the victims or their families.

    Now, she was an employee, who was also a dependent, who also did not get paid for her work. That is what the lawsuit is about. And since he has already corroborated those things; through a written statement by his lawyers, it is not really a "he said she said" kind of thing. The interesting to me is how people were willing to accept everything said with Ed Piskor. Piskor did come off creepy, but no one accused him of a crime. It was possible it was just extremely lonely and overly friendly, and trying to white knight women, but no one ignored the story. Last time I looked up responses to it on facebook some people were happy Piskor killed himself because they think he was a rapist.
    People did videos about Gaiman months ago, but his fan ignored it. I saw comments on, again of facebook, that the people doing the videos were jealous and politically motivated. Gaiman was a male feminist and had a very public persona, so his fans felt like they knew him on a personal level where people don't with most creators.
    As far as the industry this seems to be a case where many people knew he was at least hooking up with women, and the abuse is alleged. I don't have a problem with people hooking up, ie Warren Ellis was sleeping with adult women. Both are very popular entertainers, and had public personas. So I can see where fans would want to sleep with both, despite neither being good looking. And to be fair most men have celebrity crushes who are women, but women generally wouldn't sleep with a random fan. The different is men will act on it. If you tell me a successful famous man likes having sex with consensual partners my response would be the meme "no lies detected"
    But if he was abusing women did people know that, and over looked it? Fans were ignoring the allegations for months because to them he was their friend. WOuld people in the industry ignore abuse allegations for them rame reason? People did that with DIddy, and Weinstein.
    As far as the Sandman show's cancelation. I don't know if they advertised the 2nd season was a planned final season. I would assume if it was very popular they would make a 3rd season, and the allegations stopped them. There are long periods between a lot of streaming shows, when network shows would usually be assumed to have another season if the show's ratings were good enough and was on a few seasons. Supernatural was on for so long everyone probably assume after a while it could go on until one or both of the stars died.
    It's not a good look for the industry is people assume there was a coverup. Rumors of sleeping with consensual people are one thing, and some people may have assumed it would have been more serious than it was. But allegations of abuse are different, but even then did someone in the industry hear it from one of the alleged victims, or from someone else who may have just been jealous and wanted to crap on Gaiman? How would anyone know if the rumors were true? There are rumors Morgan Freeman is too "close" to his grandfather, and that seems to be because people think he's.... to close to her, no one has actually seen anything.
    Some people do make up fan fiction in thier head. If a normal break up happens some people assume there was cheating, or some type of abuse, when it could have been simply people growing apart. If Gaiman was sleeping with young adult women some people see that as automatically bad. but it's different forcing someone to do something. SO why would anyone in the industry take it that seriously if they heard Gaiman did anything if they heard it from a struggling artist who has a fraction of the fame? How would this person know Gaiman or the victim well enough to know the rumor is true?
    I think there it's possible to separate the art from the artist, but it's up to what makes individuals comfortable. I can't watch any Roman Polanski movies, the fact he's a child predator would over shadow the movie. After Norm McDonald died I watched some clips of the Mike Tyson Mysteries, which I avoided before. I figured since Hollywood is full of criminals and people who gave them a pass I can watch the show, and it doesn't mean I condone his crimes. He was in The Hangover, and was on a Comedy Central Roast, so being a convicted rapist doesn't mean you're not welcome in entertainment.
    I think what hurt Gaiman, as with Whedon, was the feminist label. They weren't supposed to cheat. As far as I remember no one alleged any crime against WHedon, he just cheated on his wife. If Gaiman's wife was ok with an open marriage than if the hookups were consensual I wonder if that would hurt his rep.
    Alot of guys get a pass for cheating. David Letterman paid interns to have sex with him, which would be huge today but non one cares. Ben Affleck cheated on his then wife with their nanny. Gaiman cheated and made some creepy statements if I remember about how the women reminded him of women who ignored him in high school and college. People will pick and choose what to be outraged about when it comes to cheating, what really hurt Gaiman is obviously abuse allegations, he might have gotten a pass if it was just cheating. Warren Ellis wasn't a male feminist, at least that wasn't his major brand as it was with Gaiman.

      So this woman was assaulted the very first day by Gaiman, but she still chose to stick around, take care of his kids, and clean his house?
      The argument could be made she was so desperate, in such dire straights, she was basically forced to stay and comply with him.
      Maybe that's true; maybe there are further details that make the allegations cut and dry, but what I find so interesting is that so many of the people pearl clutching at Gaiman taking advantage will tout sex work as something positive and even empowerment for women. How many women in this industry enter because of desperation or dire straights? And how many men take advantage of it?
      There's an inconsistency in logic. Is using someone sexually, when they're in a position of weakness, abberant or not?

    • @Brush4000
      @Brush4000 2 дні тому

      @ While I don't think Ben Affleck should have cheated I can see why the nanny would want to have sex with him. He was good looking, a huge star, and probably charming. So did she WANT to sleep with the handsome movie star, or felt pressure to do it to keep working?
      People act like women will stand up for themselves easily, like in movies where short women beat up linebackers. So I would think the position of a nanny for Gaiman wasn't that great of a job where she would work for him if she was pressured to have sex with him.
      I think most men would have no issue quitting if they were pressured to have sex with someone they didn't want to, unless they were very desperate like a drug addict.
      The David Letterman thing would have been a bigger negative I would have thought. He was rich and famous and very ugly, so I doubt the interns were happy to sleep with him for money. But Warren Ellis did sleep with a lot of women because of his small level of fame in the comic's industry.
      But the Louis CK thing was also odd. He asked to jerk it, women said yes ( I always sassumed they thought he was joking as he does dirty joked) but were too stunned to know how to react. I think men would have shouted and stormed out of the room, so we have to really admit that men and women will react differently to these situations.
      It's a bad idea for any man to sleep with a woman under him, as even if there is no presssure if she regrets the situation later she can claim pressure. Or they may be expectations she can use their relationship to benefit her on the job, or he may do things he wouldn't do later.
      But pressure to men is different than pressure to women. Men are under pressure all the time, we find it easier to say no. We don't care if someone who is an acting like an asshole doesn't like it. I noticed women act like pressure is coersion, like a mafia threat: Nice house here, be a shame if something happened.
      I can see this being like the Warren Ellis thing where women had sex with a rich and famous celebrity who wasn't good looking and later got upset that it didn't become a long term thing. Basically the walk of shame.
      Tha accusations of lack of consent are troubline, but as men we assume women could easily say no, and walk away from the situation. But remember the Ansari Anziz thing were a woman consented to have sex with him but claimed she wans't into it, and framed it like he knew. They stopped having sex when she verbally said no, so there was consent and we don't know how she was reacting she claimed it was clear she wasn't into it.
      Honestly I would think the women would have no problem saying no, and walking away as he isn't that big. I get they wouldn't want to get into a fight with him, but since he was a "feminist" I would think they'd feel comfortable walking away.

      It would be crazy for a Gaiman fan to cancel Lovecraft since Gaiman himself wrote Lovecraftian short stories, so he certainly wouldn't have been up for cancelling Lovecraft. It's not as if Lovecraft's unfashionable opinions (of H.G. Wells' equally unfashionable pro-eugenics opinions) have been a recent shock revelation. I remember as a young lefty I was uncomfortable with Kipling because I had only recently learned of his opinions, so I guess, in a way, it may be the hot-headedness of youth that leads these people to reject the creative works of people they learn unfortunate facts about, and then as we get older we learn that no one passes the purity test, particularly in creative circles and particularly when the creator in question is from another era. I hope, in time, the cancellers get a sense of perspective and assess works on their own merits without expecting the artists to be paragons. I call BS on the claim that season 2 of Sandman was always going to be the last one. There was way too much story left to tell, and if it had been popular, of course they would have kept going. They could have just said that, in light of the current allegations, they’re not going forward with more, and everyone would have understood. But instead they lied for no good reason.

If things escalate they can say they washed their hands of him at the earliest opportunity; if the case comes out in his favour they can pretend they didn't cave to the pressure to cancel. I'm surprised victims' lawyers don't pay attention to this. Usually, if proven the culpability of the aggressor, there's some sort of financial restitution to the victims as compensation. Writers, in general, don't own much, which while not the case with the millionaire Neil Gaiman, is true of pretty much everyone else. But they do have royalties, from which they make money, and in many cases those royalties are the only property that can be given in compensation to the victim. So when a publisher or a production company cuts ties with the author or artist, it's preventing their victims from accessing a form of restitution. So if I were Pavlovich's lawyer I would be paying attention to Gaiman's catalog deletions and have injunctions so that the companies still produced these books.

    From what I understand there was only ever one Miracleman issue in the '90s that was written but not fully illustrated or published. In other words the second half the the "Silver Age" storyline was new when it debuted a year or two ago. And IMO it shows. Gaiman is a far lesser writer now than he was 30-35 years ago. On the one hand, I wish Gaiman and Marvel hadn't dragged their feet for so long in getting the later chapters of Miracleman out--because now thanks to this scandal they probably will never be produced. But on the other hand, the "Silver Age" was far inferior to the "Golden Age", and the quality drop off exactly coincides with the new writing. I still liked the later issues, but they were nothing special compared to what Moore and Gaiman did decades ago, back when they both had talent, originality, and bravery.

    I’m not saying I don’t believe the story, I actually find it pretty believable personally, but this story she’s telling is weird. Neil Gaiman is insanely rich. Why would he hire a homeless person living on the beach for housekeeping and nannying? If this is true, she really should have seen it as a red flag. Doesn’t make what Gaiman allegedly did anymore terrible, but still. I feel like she might have thrown the part about her being homeless in to explain why she wouldn’t quit after being assaulted. It’s not like a corporate job with a ladder to climb, you think she’d made good money working for Gaiman so she should at least, I would think, be able to hold up somewhere else while she put together a resume (maybe to housekeep for someone else). I guess it’s possible he was paying her pennies or nothing at all, but why would you move in with a bunch of strangers who are offering you a too-good-to-be-true deal, anyway. God knows what they could be up to. I don’t know, i guess we’ll see when it all goes to court.

    • @markpostgate2551
      @markpostgate2551 3 дні тому

      Also, I feel if her argument (or the argument of her supporters) is that her apparent consent was not real consent because she feared she would be homeless if she refused him, then that means licking ones own excrement off of a dick is preferable to homelessness, so wouldn't it be better to raise awareness about homelessness? The story depends on us being aware that homelessness is worse. I am well aware that homelessness does make people vulnerable to sexual exploitation, so why if the latter is scandalously horrendous do we tolerate the former in a civilized society?

Regardless of the merits of the suit itself, it will probably get tossed out unless she's claiming she was also assaulted in the US. Despite the general arrogance of the US government, they do not own the world. Perhaps the plaintiff was encouraged to file because of Trump's recent antics(!)

    Filing in places where they feel it will be easiest to get suit through and potentially win. What any good lawyer would do. If there was ever a comic that didn't need a facsimile it's Sandman. Nobody collects Sandman, 90+ percent of the crowd read it in trades. I'd order like near zero on a Sandman Facsimile issue. The #1 sold like poorly. Yes I did notice as the Stormwatch Compendium came out recently. Awesome stuff. Warren Ellis is the man. Sadly Miracleman doesn't sell well either, and the longer the wait the more nobody will remember or care. Unfortunately this is the safest approach for all to take. Nobody wants to get to far ahead of this for as long as this is going to take to play out. But hey I'll still sell Sandman and 1602 and Death to anyone who wants it. WTF20.

    honestly at least with this particular situation it seems fishy that she was sa'd but she'd still stay working. like homeless or not it seems fishy she'd stick around if that had happened. so i'm going to listen but verify and wait for actual evidence to come out and not just her say from years ago
