Thanks for uploading - very interesting. Infuriating to a large degree to hear Haughey going on about "standards of propriety, especially for Ministers"..given what we know about him now. For the latter end of his political career he was literally being bankrolled week to week by rich businessmen and associates. What in a broader sense is more infuriating is that Haughey could have been our best ever leader, he had the inteligence, the vision, experience and the toughness. He chose at some point to go down the route of his lifestyle and corruption - while at the same time being a very effective politician. Gary Murphy's biography of him, while a tad soft given it was written with family approval, is a good read and makes one wonder what he could have done.
This was during the period between his resignation and the McCracken tribunal when Haughey was fancied (and fancied himself) as an elder statesman, with his eye on the presidency.
I don’t think he wanted the presidency. The way he treated Patrick Hillary and Mary Robinson suggested he didn’t have very much respect for the office. In any case, he already had his own mansion and lots of land. Being President would probably have alerted the media even more to his way of living.
Haughey had a wonderful capacity to articulate his views on such matters as dignity in high political office or to describe - in obvious admiration - the qualities and values of men like Lemass and Dev. Yet he had an even greater capacity to be venal, to see himself as being above the law: in truth, he was a man without shame, brought down by his love for the lavish lifestyle, one that he couldn't afford but had no hesitation or qualms about borrowing and embezzling to sustain.
Its amazing how quickly political turmoil is forgotten but is dressed by media the time as the most extraordinary ever. Almost nobody remembers the crisis of 1994, described at the biggest in our lifetime by Pat Kenny
When it comes to Haughey and money, one of the most spectacular episodes was actually yet to happen, even when this interview after retirement was aired. He went on to sell Abbeyville his home for 45 million Pounds. That must be about 100 million euro today. Today it lies idle having sold for 5 million some years ago.
A fascinating figure from nothing to a millionaire whatever way you look at it. Yes he was grotesquely crooked but how he navigated politically was amazing especially after the arms running. He deceived everyone, zero loyalty and calculated everything out. Then there was charm and intelligence to eventually him admitting everything he denied.
Sean Lemass was Ireland's greatest Taoiseach. Even though he was an elder statesman, he knew Ireland has to modernise. He gave us Ireland's first national television service. He abolished a lot of the stupid and outdated censorship of books and films. He tried to have a fair relationship with Northern Ireland. A truly great man. Shame his son in law didn't have the same principles.
The O.G. Original Gangster When he called Bertie Ahern The most Devious most Cunning of them all He knew what he was talking about. CJ was the Teacher and Bertie was his student. He learnt from the OG
Thank you so much for uploading this interview. I recall watching this live at the time back in 1994. PK still going strong👍
Two detestable individuals haughey and pat kenny

This comment 100% spot on...
Nobody's perfect. Haughey was complex man.
Really interesting this. There’s almost no interviews of him on here.
12:47 "we had a fairly biggish house" - even haughey had to smile at that one

Doubt he wanted the Presidency. Unlike his protège Bertie
Charlie never wanted the Presidency
😅
I like the part,,,fancied himself,,,
A fascinating interview.
Lemass and O’Neill: a Norman Republican meets a Celtic Unionist.
Pat Kenny is still going strong at 75, fair play to him.
I have been looking for this - v interesting post - thanks!
Charlie was very sharp to give him his due.

I wish RTE had every Saturday Live programme up in full.
I doubt RTE kept many of them in their archive
At 11:00 Pat Kenny is basically saying ‘he wasn’t corrupt like you, Charlie’
Michael O'Sullivan wouldn't be your typical Irish man. When Lemass became 'Prime Minister'. Taoiseach is the word you're looking for Michael.

He was a thieving bastard...how can you even reomtley admire him
Let nothing erase the fact that Charlie was a selfish cheating embezzler
Haughey is just wonderful here urbane and articulate...a side of him that was never stressed enough in all the postmortems...
Stressed the people of Ireland you mean. ..might I suggest you really need to do more research on Haughey.
@Sean Campbell He didn't stress Ireland like the current crop that are there at the moment especially Mr. Vad
He was a horrible person
@seancampbell9740 compared to what we have today it's night and day
We have got to tighten our belts im old enough to remember it as he lived in luxury with a cup of tea in his hand

"...the sulphur of scandal clung to him" 😅 oh the irony
Great politician who had awful flaws personally.. two sides of a coin.. good on the one side and unfortunately awful on the other one.
Thought that was Frank Dunlop next to him for a second.
Could have been a great man.Flaws were too great
You would never see an interview like this today it would have to be rushed and dumbed down
The last Irish leader with balls. RIP 🙏
You must be joking. Brass neck more like
he loved the new seekers song...beg steal or borrow
Gangster
Could have been a great man
The Irish looked at Haughey and simply saw themselves. He encouraged a forever war against 'Da Brits' which has failed them.
Clip's aged badly I see.
Corrupt Mr Haughy that's all one remember
The O.G.
Original Gangster
