  • The Jonathan Browning Mountain Rifle was Browning's version of the Hawken rifle. Well made, and it has many features like the originals. Examples like the slant hooked breech, and method of attaching the trigger guard to the plate.

    I have this same rifle but in .50 caliber. Seems I vaguely remember using that Buckhorn sight, at a blade position 3/4s to the top of Buckhorn or the top of blade level with those horns, keeps u on 8 inch pie plate at 100 yards.

    I think we spoke about me building my own custom flintlocks from scratch… but I admit… I wish I had bought one of these rifles back in the day. I bought a .36 caliber TC Seneca back in 1976 for my 16th birthday… and I have been hooked on BP ever since. I still own that old TC .36 and have taken tons of small game… but even a few deer with it shooting maxi balls. I still use my original Lyman maxi ball mold to make them.
    That is a beautiful rifle sir.

      As I may have said before I never appreciated how well they build these guns till I did some building, as you. That Senica is also a sweet ML. My father bought one in the early 80's I think and it was a joy to shoot. Even with my building ability, if they were still made I believe I'd need to have one. Always enjoy hearing from you. OR

    Jonathan Browning was the father of John M Browning.
    When he came to Utah as a Mormon Pioneer, he started his farm and also a gunsmith shop.
    My GGGG great grandfather also came to Utah at that time. He worked for Jonathan on the farm.
    As partial payment for his work, My GGGG grandfather was given a muzzle loading Rifle that Jonathon had built.
    The gun was sold to help pay to bring my GGGG grandfather's wife and children to Utah.
    Wish that he could have kept it and that I could have inherited it.

      Thanks Steve. I am lucky because when I purchased it in the 80’s I about the only knew was that it was more expensive than the TC Hawken version. I have more appreciation now after building several of the Hawken styles. Browning (more correctly the company that was contracted) did well in keeping as best they could with the original design. There are other fine builds I’m sure, but as far as I know, these rifles were more available (and affordable) to the public compared to custom built ones. Glad you enjoyed seeing it. O.R.

    This is the first time I have found mention of these Browning muzzle loaders. I have one in brass in 50 caliber that also shoots great. We owners know that the twist of the barrels is designed for round balls and unfortunately the majority of muzzle loaders used for hunting these days are within most states' definition of muzzle loaders but have modern features more akin to single shot and bolt action cartridge rifles and use substitute powders that in my opinion are not in the spirit of the original hunter's rifles.

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  3 місяці тому

      I think we’re on the same page. So--, the hunter that is using the modern style, does he enjoy retro?? Or is it that it extends the hunting season or adds to it? Seems to me that was not the original intention of the season but manufacturing created a hybrid that can qualify with scopes, plastic coated ammo, substitute powder in pellet form, shotgun primers, and more. Similar thing with “bow” hunting. That concludes my rant. O.R.

      Yes. I always wanted to be somewhat self sustaining and the flint lock is (or was) the logical choice. Still needed to purchase flints because no raw material here, and powder. Recently I got into making powder, largely because of information on UA-cam. Works amazingly well. Can also make caps and was using them on the Browning. • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  Рік тому

      @@glockerbob I’m betting that you are mixing the components ok because the instructions are pretty clear, and the supplied measuring spoons help. Even so, might want to double check that. I think I use more of the mixture in each cap, maybe by 50%, so after adding the acetone and it dries there’s no metal showing on the bottom. My eye dropper has a fairly small drop. Try to not have powder high on the sides, especially if using them in revolvers. I use only one drop of acetone, never tried alcohol. As you said, both could be the issue. Alcohol has 10% water, and I think nail polish remover is not 100% acetone either because I think it is 30-60% depending on brand. Other ingredients therefore could be messing things up. The prime-all has one component that resembles sulfur and if so, that, or something else might be separating from the mixture. Powdered glass I believe is used to ignite things and too much liquid could most of it to sink to the bottom, or who knows. Anyway, lots of speculation about why yours isn’t working. Hopefully this helps, and be careful. O.R.

    hello Mr O.R.
    black powder contagion better than catching covid 😀
    for this Hawken rifle, in my armory there are 3 choices 120/160 .45 .50 and .54
    pedersoli or investarm
    (my favorite but too expensive PEDERSOLI 1861 SPRINGFIELD cal.58)
    in the .45 a .454 round bullet (the Lee mold I have for the yank) goes in?
    the bigger the caliber, the less heavy the gun, right?

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  8 місяців тому

      Correct. Unless the outside diameter is bigger, which for the Browning and most others is the same. Thompson Center made a.36 caliber they called a Seneca I believe, and the barrel was smaller. A very sweet little gun. Right, even a bad day on the range is better than COVID. O.R.

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  Рік тому

      Need to know how you are measuring the bore? A vernier can get into the groves and give more than bore diameter. These groves are cut into the barrel after it has been bored, but what is left of the bore ( called lands or rifling) will have bore diameter and for the 44’s I have, is .440. I turn a brass cylinder till it just slides into the bore and then measure that. Putting the legs of a vernier into it usually gives a higher reading. Appreciate your getting back on this. O.R.

    Wow! Great review. This is the first time I have seen any kind of review or information on this great rifle.
    I first saw an ad on the Browning Mountain Rifle in a magazine when they first came out. Never seeing one in person, I knew I wanted one of those rifles, but being a young buck at the time, I couldn't afford one. None of the gun shops in my area ever had one, they only carried the T/C and a couple lower quality ones.
    I wound up buying a T/C Renegade in .50 cal and used that for a few years. When I first saw the Lyman Great Plains Rifle, I thought it looked like a twin to the Browning so I got one and hunted with it until I got the in-line craze.
    About 20 years ago, while traveling I walked into a Gunshop and they had a deluxe edition of the Browning Mountain Rifle with a velvet lined Alder wood case and a powder horn. It was the first time I ever saw one of these beautiful rifles in person. The gun was unfired in as new condition. That rifle followed me home that day.
