It's a bit of comedy but context is important. There HAD been a ruck just before that and the referee still let the Italian go offside. Haskell was asking because he (rightly) thought that his actions had formed a ruck. The referee incorrectly said he hadn't so he was asking what he had to do to form a ruck if that wasn't one. Extremely unprofessional from the referee, if a player asks for law clarification they aren't supposed to be a smartass.

I am sure there must be a conduct rule in football that allows the ref to penalise a player for insulting the ref. Perhaps fifa don't want their prima donnas to get told off. NIGEL would not stand for it.
Part of the reason is the players from a young age are told the ref has the last word. Also in rugby union they dont play by rules they play by laws and the ref is the judge and final adjudicator. In rugby league the refs dont seem to get as much respect as the refs in union do

Honestly, the state of some of the comments in this thread! Can someone please tell me why so many of them refer to football? This video is supposed to be a celebration of rugby so why all of the needless and sanctimonious comparisons? Talking down to other sports is not (and never will be) the right way to promote rugby.
Mainly because some of the major sports players practically try to intimidate the Referee into changing decisions. Association Football (Soccer) is clearly the worst. Players mob the Ref, verbally attack him/her, constantly cheat re pulling jerseys, "diving" with imaginary injuries (often getting away with it) trying to "trick" the Ref into awarding penalties and generally acting as if they've just finished drama school. It's disgusting and we do NOT want those Football actions repeated in Rugby.

When they see actions that are predominantly used by (in the main) Football players, they point it out that this is not Football and rugby holds them to a higher standard of adherence to the rules regarding Referees and their decisions. It's why the only valid person to discuss things with the Ref is the Captain. Only if the Ref addresses a player directly can they reply. I've played both games to a high level and there is a huge difference to how the Refs control things.

Until that happens Football will always be used as an example of what NOT to do.
This was a Super-14 match between Hurricanes and Crusaders a couple of months before the 2011 World Cup. Dan Carter, playing for the Crusaders, was absolutely critical for the All Blacks going into the World Cup, so he had to stay injury-free. In the game Hurricanes got penalised pretty much every time they tackled Carter, including when Nonu tackled him right before this clip begins. Utterly frusrated, Hurricane's captain Andrew Hore asks the ref - "Are we not allowed to tackle Dan Carter in this game?!"
