      He was asking for clarification on the rule, that’s all. The ref’s response was pretty poor to be honest.

      @@philsswweightlossdiary2944 especially since the ref was wrong multiple times, allowing Italy to compete and then leave after a ruck was formed but still not calling it a ruck.

    • @ragerancher
      @ragerancher 5 років тому +25

      It's a bit of comedy but context is important. There HAD been a ruck just before that and the referee still let the Italian go offside. Haskell was asking because he (rightly) thought that his actions had formed a ruck. The referee incorrectly said he hadn't so he was asking what he had to do to form a ruck if that wasn't one.
      Extremely unprofessional from the referee, if a player asks for law clarification they aren't supposed to be a smartass.

    Honestly, the state of some of the comments in this thread! Can someone please tell me why so many of them refer to football? This video is supposed to be a celebration of rugby so why all of the needless and sanctimonious comparisons? Talking down to other sports is not (and never will be) the right way to promote rugby.

    • @johnwilson5743
      @johnwilson5743 4 роки тому +2

      Mainly because some of the major sports players practically try to intimidate the Referee into changing decisions. Association Football (Soccer) is clearly the worst. Players mob the Ref, verbally attack him/her, constantly cheat re pulling jerseys, "diving" with imaginary injuries (often getting away with it) trying to "trick" the Ref into awarding penalties and generally acting as if they've just finished drama school. It's disgusting and we do NOT want those Football actions repeated in Rugby.

    • @Leifr952
      @Leifr952 4 роки тому +2

      @@johnwilson5743 But why bring that up on a rugby video? What has it got to do with rugby?! Why not just enjoy and appreciate rugby for it is rather than for what it isn't? Weird and self-defeating attitude.

      @@Leifr952 Hi mate. Actually, I agree with you. BUT... this video is about Rugby Referees and their interactions. How they control and explain the situations to players. When they see actions that are predominantly used by (in the main) Football players, they point it out that this is not Football and rugby holds them to a higher standard of adherence to the rules regarding Referees and their decisions. It's why the only valid person to discuss things with the Ref is the Captain. Only if the Ref addresses a player directly can they reply. I've played both games to a high level and there is a huge difference to how the Refs control things.

      @@johnwilson5743 Okay, but pompously lecturing football isn't the right way to sell or conduct rugby. If someone steps out of line in rugby then they should, of course, be punished by the ref; but blaming football for their bad behaviour is just bizarre. Rugby has a huge chip on its shoulder about its more popular and accessible cousin, which seems to manifest itself on the pitch in this way. It's not helpful to the game's image and it needs to stop.

      @@Leifr952 Sorry mate. You are not facing reality. I've also lived in the USA and Canada and some American Football Refs say things like: "This is not Ice Hockey" when berating players. The worst example sport is simply picked as a comparison.
      In my experience when 5 or 6 Soccer (Football) players rush a Ref and badger him to change a ruling they should all be yellow carded. Until that happens Football will always be used as an example of what NOT to do.

      This was a Super-14 match between Hurricanes and Crusaders a couple of months before the 2011 World Cup. Dan Carter, playing for the Crusaders, was absolutely critical for the All Blacks going into the World Cup, so he had to stay injury-free. In the game Hurricanes got penalised pretty much every time they tackled Carter, including when Nonu tackled him right before this clip begins. Utterly frusrated, Hurricane's captain Andrew Hore asks the ref - "Are we not allowed to tackle Dan Carter in this game?!"
