In this video I share a few tips on how to fix basement or crawl space water problems. First look at where the water is entering. At those locations, assess the slope of the ground and make sure it slopes away from the house. If gutter downspouts are there with no drainage tile, install some drainage tile. If the basement wall is cracked grind it out and fill with hydraulic cement. If that doesn't fix the problem dig down and install a french drain system around your foundation.

I connected my downspouts to buried plastic pipe with emitters at the end out in the middle of my lawn. Works great.

I did a similar installation for my downspouts. I have my downspouts dumping into 12" catch basins. These basins will trap any leaves or roof crud in the sump part of the basin so the pipe doesn't clog over time. It's easy to periodically clean out the catch basins. Works real well

Put a torpedo level on the pipe...quickest way to check slope!

let us know how it worked. i would be afraid the drain pipes are too shallow and will freeze in the winter.

+ Frugal Home DIY - I like the idea of using the square to measure the depth of your trench. First time I had seen that (I don't get out much). Now that it has been almost a couple years, is there anything you wish would have done differently?

better to just use a level 4 foot level with a 1 inch board taped to the end = :) 1/4 inch fall per foot works great. screens to block grud would have also been nice.

sloping doesn't do crap when clay soils are involved..for your drains you could've put them above ground..i put tarps 8 feet away from the house and the sump ran just like it always did.. no diff.. either go down to the footer outside with gravel and a sloping drain to an outside area or pump pit (deep ones don't freeze) and use epoxy on the inside.its pricey but it works..just don't put the dirt back..put gravel in always.. prevention starts on the outside..

hopefully you have installed a screen to prevent the leaves and what's not into the pipe.. else you have got to dig them out and clean it every few years... :=

If the house would have been back filled correctly you wouldn't even be having this problem.

That crawl space looks crudely encapsulated at best. I would look into a better approach to protect your family and home. Monitor the humidity and do a radon test.

Tim Xavier not all crawlspaces are encapsulated, and isn't the best treatment for all either. Every crawl that I have been in that was encapsulated sure looks nice. but I would be there fixing a broken pipe from the house plumbing and with it being encapsulated the water/sewage had no place to go, but make a big mess. Thick foam board insulation on the walls and segmented vapor barrier are the way to go in my opinion.

If your going to encapsulate the crawlspaces use 2" foam board or closed cell spray foam and install sump pumps and drain tile. For the crack, I would inject it with either hydofoam of a structural epoxy. Most of that stuff can be picked up from Crawlspacedepot.com

why dont you just let the down spouts drain into the "drain" like any other 1st world country. wtf. does america not have drains to carry water away to the sewage system

hey man I would watch what video you are posting.. it's not legal to dump roof water into a creek... Dumping into storm drains
is not just wrong, it’s illegal.
Storm water, or rain water, flows into the storm drains you see at street corners or into roadside ditches.
Unlike the water that flows down the drains inside your home which goes to sewage treatment facilities, the storm drain system is completely separate; water in the storm drain receive no treatment or filtering process. This means that any pollution that gets washed into the storm drains go directly to our creeks, rivers, bayous and ultimately Galveston Bay. Examples of common storm water pollution come from construction debris, material stockpiles, automotive fluids, erosion, paint, pesticides, litter or any other industrial, construction and household materials. So be sure to keep all work areas clean and sweep up litter and debris. Cover storage and dumpsters and clean them regularly to avoid leaks. And install silt fences and other erosion controls where needed and properly maintain them especially after rainstorms.
Remember, it’s illegal to dump or discharge waste or pollution into storm drains! So do the right thing and make keeping storm water clean part of your job.

I see the brochure you quoted this from. Good info, and I'm all for clean water. I have a question though, it seems this info is talking about polluted water and water that comes from the interior of your house. Do you think it also applies to roof water? Storm drains also catch all the water coming off roads with all the automotive pollutants, so why would a roof be any more dirty than that?

Water coming off of a roof is no more polluted than sidewalks or streets. What is your green solution to that? Sub surface water collected from French drains is also not illegal. Check your facts man.
