Ole had become a good guy about a year prior when he teamed with Bob Armstrong. He became my favorite wrestler and that Saturday when he came out after double crossing Dusty ruined my weekend. I think I may have cried.
@Kent nope the idea came from Dusty and Ole. What a swerve. It was the greatest of all the buildups and back stories and storyline. It was pure genius.
Even thought I kinda knew Ole was gonna turn on Dusty I was still surprised in a way. Ole's promo on TBS after the turn was one of the greatest promos (maybe the greatest one ever). The Great thing about the turn was like Jim said they had 2 previous tag matches where everything was cool between Ole & Dusty!! Perfect angle and turn!!!!!
I remember the angle like it was yesterday. As a hater of heels, I wanted to tag team with Dusty myself to get even with Ole and his whole coterie of fiends. Lol. Such good times. They don't do it like that anymore to be sure.
If you look at the surviving footage you will actually see Dusty Rhodes throw a punch at Gene Anderson who was one of two special guest referees inside the cage--so Ole defended his brother and more importantly, the referee from Dusty's dastardly attack. Everybody cut hot promos afterwards including Dusty, Ivan Koloff, and Assassin #1. The hottest line in Ole's promo was that Lars should be thrown out of wrestling.
At this you tube video, Georgia Wrestling - The Big Turn of 1980, ua-cam.com/video/fCIgLQGruvs/v-deo.html at about 2:25 through 2:32 Dusty Rhodes throws illegal fists and elbows at the both Assassins, Ivan Koloff, the other special guest referee and Gene Anderson. Clearly Ole Anderson had no choice.
I wish Vince & Ole could put aside their differences & Vince would realize how important Ole has been to the business. Ole belongs in the HOF if for no other reason than this promo. Still one of the best promos ever by one of the best ever.
After Vince bought out WCW in April 1984, Ole had a confrontation with him in the TBS parking lot. VKM remained calm and offered Ole a job with him. "Ole, I'll make you more money than you have ever seen." Deep down, Ole later regretted it.
I think a few people have said that Ole ran into Vince and Linda at an NWA convention or meeting and after blasting Vince he said Fuck You to Linda, which resulted in the bad blood
This is the greatest story Cornette has ever told. There are 3 great heel promos I can think of. Ole's after turning on Dusty, CM Punk's pipe bomb and my favorite, Shawn's "who's your daddy, Montreal" promo.
Ole Anderson was one of the best workers and was one of the top five talkers in the business. By the way Ole forgot more about professional wrestling than Vince McMahon will ever know.
The fun thing was that even five and six years later the heat between Ole and Dusty was still there. The year the horsemen formed, you just kind of knew watching that Ole was always going to go after Dusty on sight. What was great back then was that you could have these feuds between guys that kept going - on and off - for years in a consistent way.
Dusty Rhodes is so underrated. He was limited as far as his moves and in ring skill goes. But he could still win you over with what he did do. Some of his matches back in the day are still some of my all time favorite matches. And on the mic... He had a speech impediment and yet still one of the greats of all time.
Underrated? He is considered constantly in top ten greatest of all time lists. He is the literal opposite of underrated. How can someone who is on every wrestling list of Greatest of All Time be underated? Haha. Who else? Ric Flair? Bruno Samartino? Shawn Michaels? Harley Race?
Dusty sucked as a booker! What.can you say about a guy who tried destroy the Rock N’ Roll Express, the Road Warriors, The Four Horsemen, ect. He would have sabotaged Magnum TA too had he not been in the car wreck. Dusty booked for Dusty and only Dusty.
Steve Warren: Nothing gets heat like betrayal. Ole and Dusty, Zbysko and Bruno, Windham and Luger. Hell, Hogan's heel turn on Macho. All of them great heel turns. The best part them- not a single fan suspected. That's the key. Too many heel turns are telegraphed these days.
The best heel turn in wrestling history. Even better than Hogan's in 1996 because with Hogan, by 96, the fans had already turned against him. This turn was so well planned and executed. The greatest ever.
To answer Jimmy's question about whether or not they had the title match between Harley Race & Tommy Rich w/ Lou Thesz as the ref, according to Mark James' excellent book on the Ga territory they did in fact have the match. After what had just happened I can't imagine the crowd was too into the match.
My older brother was there that night and was drinking with friends. They tried to attack Ole and Gene and Ivan Koloff. They went outside to where the wrestlers leave the Omni and started throwing rocks at Ole’s car.
"Dusty Rhodes ask me, will you be my tag partner? I said sure. Stan Hanson asked will you tag with me, I said sure Stan I'm on your side! Tommy Rich wanted me to ride with him, I did. ....hated every minute of it!" One of those times that made me a fan!! I don't care about what people feel about Ole right now, but to me, he was one of the best damn wrestlers ever!
those days are over..we don't have a society capable of handling real heat like the omni had in 80..wrestling sux because the fans have changed too..everybody wants it spoon fed.back then there were layers in a storyline that people with actual attention spans were watching and reacting too..it's over n that's sad
What is left out is the moment Dusty and Ole became allies. Dusty had sent out Mike Davis to tell the Assassins that he was in the studio. Assassin no 1 said something to the effect to take this back to Dusty Rhodes messenger boy and gave him a good open had slap and they started to beat the crap out of him. Dusty came running out and the Assassins whipped him too. They got him in the corner of the ring and busted the corner of his eye open. Assassin 1 repeatedly head butted him in the wound. Ole later came out and made a pact with Dusty.
I watched this angle play out and it's beautiful. Even more beautiful that ole and Dusty did it again 5 years later. I'll add the andersons best Dusty and Andre.
Ole Also made the Point of saying He had to do his best to put up with Being a Friend of Gordon Solie and After the turn, he no longer had to and If Gordon said the Wrong thing Ole would do a Number on Solie too! GREAT ANGLE!!
People talk about how the Bloodline storyline is the best of all time. For us that was around in 1980 when wrestling was more "real" I humbly submit this as one of the best of all time.
Best heel turns in pro wrestling history 1 Ole Anderson turns on Dusty Rhodes (1980) 2 Hulk Hogan turns heel to join the NWO (1996) 3 Andre the Giant turns on Hulk Hogan (1987) 4 Macho Man Randy Savage turns on Hulk Hogan (1989) 5 Eddie Guerrero turns on Rey Mysterio (2005)

Wow Jim Cornette Dusty Rhodes impersonation is spot on lol🤣😄😅
Ole had become a good guy about a year prior when he teamed with Bob Armstrong. He became my favorite wrestler and that Saturday when he came out after double crossing Dusty ruined my weekend. I think I may have cried.
It was a perfect setup. Ole yelling "DUSTY ASKED ME!!!" when he was talking about biding his time to set up Dusty is so memorable.
That was an incredible heel move. This is when story telling in wrestling meant something.
The best part was that he didn't just beat up Dusty, he totally outsmarted him.
@Kent nope the idea came from Dusty and Ole. What a swerve. It was the greatest of all the buildups and back stories and storyline. It was pure genius.
At around 3:48 Cornette does a spot-on impression of Dusty Rhodes...LMBO!!!
The way Jim tells it was just as exciting as being there!
This is one of the best heel turns in history
We don’t wanna hear it...WELL YOU’RE GONNA HAVE TO HEAR IT!!!
Crazy how Jimmy was in his early 20s during a lot of these stories he tells.
Ole Anderson...RIP
Even thought I kinda knew Ole was gonna turn on Dusty I was still surprised in a way. Ole's promo on TBS after the turn was one of the greatest promos (maybe the greatest one ever). The Great thing about the turn was like Jim said they had 2 previous tag matches where everything was cool between Ole & Dusty!! Perfect angle and turn!!!!!
I have to admit I love Corneys Dusty imitation
Christie Harris I like it to
Yah he is spot on with the dusty impersonation lol
These were the good old days of wrestling
The storytelling done by Ole in that promo never gets old.
Excellent storytelling there, Jim! I wish I could have been there to witness that. Ole Anderson is no one to mess with!!!
I remember the angle like it was yesterday. As a hater of heels, I wanted to tag team with Dusty myself to get even with Ole and his whole coterie of fiends. Lol. Such good times. They don't do it like that anymore to be sure.
@Lord Belial there has never been a more accurate statement.
Michael Connors I loved it when he called Lars a "do gooder" and "Mr Sir Galahad".
Can I find it UA-cam? Looked and couldn’t didn’t know if I was looking in the wrong place

Clearly Ole Anderson had no choice.
What are you? Ole's attorney? "Your honor, my client had no choice!" :)
fromthegreatbeyond nice old school promo
I wish Vince & Ole could put aside their differences & Vince would realize how important Ole has been to the business. Ole belongs in the HOF if for no other reason than this promo. Still one of the best promos ever by one of the best ever.

Ole was a true badass.
No , who cares about that lame VInce HOF , who gives a Rats as whos in a business run HOF that has Trump and carey in it?
Vince still had people reaching out to Ole almost to the end but Ole always declined. Ole stuck to his guns and I can respect that.
Ole’s Book is a MUST READ. He talks about everything & Everyone with No Punches Pulled!!
This is the greatest story Cornette has ever told. There are 3 great heel promos I can think of. Ole's after turning on Dusty, CM Punk's pipe bomb and my favorite, Shawn's "who's your daddy, Montreal" promo.
Ole's return to the Horsemen in the spring of 86 after getting his leg broke by Dusty is Anderson's best promo imo
One of the best heel promos ever, regardless of whether you like him or not.
Ole Anderson was one of the best workers and was one of the top five talkers in the business. By the way Ole forgot more about professional wrestling than Vince McMahon will ever know.

Best angle I’ve ever seen in my 55 years of watching wrestling.

Thankfully we have UA-cam
The heels had to be escorted out of the building by security because the fans were that angry about a fake wrestling angle.
It wasn't fake dude

Ole's promo here, in my opinion, is 3rd all time greatest promo; behind Austin's "3:16" promo at King of the Ring and Dusty's "Hard Times" promo.
i remember this happening and im not sure which was greater ... seeing it on tv OR hearing jim recount it now. i love corny's stories.

Jody Hamilton was the assassin here in Tulsa during McGuirk days. Great heel.
Ole did it again in 1990 when he and the Horsemen turned on Sting at Clash of the Champions. I was 10 and heartbroken because Sting was my hero!

How did the Dusty Rhodes/Ole Anderson feud start?
Corny could tell a dr suess book story and it would shine, if a book company hired him to do audio books or readings etc they would make a killing
I remember that match!!!
Best heel turns in pro wrestling history
1 Ole Anderson turns on Dusty Rhodes (1980)
2 Hulk Hogan turns heel to join the NWO (1996)
3 Andre the Giant turns on Hulk Hogan (1987)
4 Macho Man Randy Savage turns on Hulk Hogan (1989)
5 Eddie Guerrero turns on Rey Mysterio (2005)
It part of the reason why nobody coming to his aid when he was kicked of (and targeted) by the Four Horsemen was smart booking.
This is truly how you do a heel turn..But I know some felt the build took too long.
